I work around my Transcriptionist schedule not mine. This allows them to make up their own hours, which is what we all want to do anyway. I tell them ahead of time if I need them for additional.
I have a few MTs that may not get as much work as the others because of their "lifestyle", but being honest with them about my expectations, I find them honest with me about what they can do - and if I need to - I have no problem with rolling up my sleeves and helping them out.
Also working closely with them, I find that I feel them out on how they are for that moment, and whether they may not be able to meet a deadline.
Many of my MTs are newbies, giving them a chance allows them to show me how hard they want it. If you have problems meeting your TAT, maybe you need to bring on someone else - try a newbie - just for backup for your problem areas. Everyone is looking for work, PT or FT. You should have no problem if you are willing to work with them instead of assigning work and ending it there.
