It depends on who is handling that info and how they destroy it when they are done.  Is it some accoutant whose office is in a back alley and he throws stuff in a community dumpster?  Or is it a reputable accoutant/accounting firm that handles that info and they promptly shred everything once they are done?  I would be sure to ask these quesitons to whoever is handling that for you.  If you are doing it yourself and putting that info on papers yourself and then mailing them out, well, you never know who can grab that info.  If it is on an online program or downloadable program, you can check with the security features they offer. 


Personally, I have always done direct deposit when it comes to tax returns.  But I have also always used H&R Block and I be sure whatever info they have that they do not to keep is shredded and not tossed in the trash.
