try this first

My computer is 4 years old and was running slow.  I was about to upgrade the memory when my computer person suggested it be reformatted first to see if that would do it.  It cost way less.  I've done that and it's made a BIG difference.  I've been told by a couple of computer pros that after a couple of years the operating system starts to break down and it's best to reformat anyway.  I would not put more money into this one now but get a new one with a faster processor when I can afford to and use this for backup.  

I've also begun to save most things to an external hard drive, which frees up a lot of memory.
