In Reply to: Those were put in place by the government for people who NEED them - NOT for people to quit their jobs for
When I was 4 months pregnant with my second child, my husband lost his job, along with our benefits. I guess I could have quit my job and applied for Medicaid, but the thought never entered my mind. What did I do? Well I increased my hours at work and worked right up until the time I went into labor (literaly, I left work and went to the hospital to have the baby - 5 days late to boot)just so I could pay $400 a month for Cobra. 8 years later, my husband was again laid off, my hours were drastically reduced, so I applied for foodstamps, only foodstamps so we could put some food on the table at the same time as trying to keep up with the mortgage so we don't lose the house on top of it. I was denied! I have worked since I was 16 years old, my husband except for these last two lay-offs had worked since he was 15. (I'm 49, he's 52). We have always paid our taxes and have never asked for any help from the goverment. One time I try to get a little help and get denied. Well I think that sux the way the government works for people who don't even try to help themselves. I'm sorry, but between me and my husband I'm sure we have put plenty of money into the welfare fund to cover some foodstamps until we get back on our feet. But no, they will give out to the ones who get pregnant and quit their jobs just so they can get some handouts.
