I think I have only had one sick day in 7 years, so other time off I let them know in advance and have never had a problem about it.  As you said, I email them and inform them I will not be working, rather than requesting (I'm an SE, also).  Time off during the day for an hour or so I just take without notifying them every time and have never had a problem with that either.  I always get my scheduled lines done by the end of the day, so I don't think they care.
