same supe 5 years, help desk always decent

5000 employees here in the U.S. and 500+ accounts. Never had a bad experience with help desk; treat them decent, they will return decent. Several supervisors have ran same accounts for years. With a huge company like this there will always be some disgruntled employees. Pros and cons to all companies....I left twice to 2 other companies and returned.

Decent money won't be there until you've had years of practice. Maybe do

All I want for Christmas is a decent job, a decent job, a decent job.
One that's not 95% ESLs, steady workload, steady accounts, good communication, office staff who aren't rude buckpassers, decent line rate, no offshoring, direct deposit, flexible schedule, not having to do 50+ 30-second reports per day, and a platform conducive to speed. I know it's not possible, but a girl can dream, can't she? This is, after all, my Christmas wish list. I never get what I want for Christmas. Why is that too much to ask for? It doesn't even matter anyways. After Christmas, I QUIT MT!!!! Burger King is just down the street, and they give food discounts.
Should I say something to my supe?
I just got someone's report they transcribed with the header typed as follows:
CT OF THE CHEST WITH CONTRAST @ 2:00 A.M. 9/22/05
I've never seen the @ symbol used this way! Clever, yes, but appropriate? I don't want to get someone in trouble but I'm wondering if I should tell my supe? Account is not the strictest with punctuation, but this just really floored me! Should I just mind my own damn business?
My supe puts NOTHING in an email
other than her little account update. She will NOT respond to an email (nothing in writing) to any questions at all -- she picks up the phone and calls. I have sent her several emails with concerns -- NO RESPONSE -- but my phone will ring at home -- I guess I will start recording my phone conversations with her !!!
I have asked for a LONG TIME about my account "going bye bye", and because the work was no longer there. Only this week did she say that it had gone to VR -- she would not put that in writing, or even hint that the account was going by the way, and believe me, I have asked her where the work has gone. When you have been on an account for a long time, an MT knows when the works "dries up." Doesn't she?
So basically, the supe's responsibilities are to email account updates 2 or 3 times a day, beg for the MT to take on ANOTHER new account that she has been handed down to her team (to slow the MT down), beg for the MT to work WHEN SHE NEEDS YOU (not when you were scheduled to work -- because the overseas MT's was not going to work that day and she needs you, or ASR equipment was down), be team cheerleader in an email occasionally when you have made HER look good, take care of the little kids they have at home with them. That pretty well describes the supe on my team.
Did try - it caused my supe to giggle :{ NM
.
Your supe sounds like ours! (Except ours ain't married). (sm)
Ours is a pathological liar, and an outright head case. up and down like a yo-yo, so I think she should get her meds readjusted! And just like yours, ours goes and tells supposedly *confidential* things about other employees. When that gets boring, she lies. Boy, does she LIE! But even though some have been the types of lies that should have gotten her fired, she is still there. Yet if we so much as come in to work 5 min. late, she's ready to have us sacked. Never mind that she comes in late, takes 2 hr. lunches, and leaves 1-2 hrs. early! She sits in her office all day with the door shut and does NOTHING but surf the internet, and then has the gall to actually SCREAM at us if we fall behind in our line counts.
Why was she hired, you ask? Because HER supervisor is just as much of a jerk-off as she is. So of course she has to hire someone even more pathetic, so she doesn't look bad. Its all about image. Make that next Lexus payment, but never mind not being an ethical person. Management at that place is so corrupt, you'd think our establishment was a 3rd World country, or something.
I talked to my supe and she said the same thing.
She then said that some people can make 1800 lines a day on that account so it can be done but I guess not by me. I have to work from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. to get it all in and I do not want to have to work like that. Too much computer time makes me cranky.
Usually bonuses are not under a supe's control
Employee Relations or your supe, I imagine. SM
Sorry, but I'm not going to give out any names/emails/phone on this forum. You must have some contact information, I'd imagine.
I send my nat'l supe/family sweets
My private offices get a beautiful basket of food every winter holiday season and my supervisor at a national I moonlight for on weekends gets a gift to the home with sweets for the family/kids.....
One year and you make decent money? What is decent money to you?

Email your supe to make sure they activated your work pool
I had this happen at another company. The supe had failed to add any accounts to my work pool.
My desk...
is 5 inches from my bed - but I hate the long commute!
Go to desk top
Double click MyComputer.
Right click on drive you want to look at and click properties. This will bring up a pie graft of how much used or free space is available.
What's your desk like?
I am in the market for a new desk. What type of desk do you have, i.e. U-shaped, L-shaped, armoire, etc. and are you comfortable/happy with it? Any recommendations on where to go to get a good deal?
old desk
I have an old antique desk that was in my grandfather's accounting office.
If I were going to buy a brand new desk, here are some of the things that I would look for.
Space on top of the desk - do you want a lot of stuff on the desk, or just room for the monitor and a cup of coffee. I have a TV and 3 cat beds on my desk, so large works for me. I would sit at the desk and check the height of the keyboard tray or the positioning of the keyboard. Is it too high, too low, if you are seated appropriately, will it work for you. Does the tray pull out and if so does that bring you too far away from the desk itself to see the monitor? Is the tray adjustable at all? If you have arms on your chair, will the arms fit below the desk, or will they bump into things. Measure the space in your office where the desk is going to go and make sure you have those dimensions with you when you look at any other desk. Is the monitor position exactly centered in front of the keyboard? It amazes me when it is not.
Check the drawers. Do they pull out easily and are they sturdy enough to hold all the stuff that inevitably ends up crammed in them.
Is there a designated space for the CPU? If so, is it easy to get to the back of it in case you need to plug/unplug peripherals? That part is important - I worked with one of those big computer desks and it was a PAIN to have to change things or plug things in. What about spaces for the computer speakers (if you have peripheral speakers.) Do you plug your headphones directly into the computer or do you plug them into the speakers? Is the plug easy to get to? I have to unplug my headphones and put them away every night or else they'll get gnawed on, so ease of plugging them in is important to me.
When it is delivered, will they put it together for you either for free or an extra cost?
I am a HUGE fan of online shopping, but I have to say that this is probably one thing that I would not buy online. For something this large I would want to be able to see it and sit at it to see if it really works for my needs.
Happy shopping!
I have a desk for that
It is called an AirDesk. I use it in my recliner when my back is bothering me and I can't sit up straight at my desk. Google it and take a look at it. It was a little pricey, but it was well worth it to me. They make a version for laptops and a version for a regular sized desktop PC, which is the one I have.
Decent MT job
Good luck in finding one any more. I have checked on several and they are all as bad as or even worse than MQ. That's why for the time being, I am staying with them. Everybody wants us to work for peanuts nowadays, thinks we can just jump from one account to another with 100% QA, understanding totally strange doctors who don't speak English, etc. The people in charge don't have a clue just how difficult this job really is. I wish I could retire!
They chain U to ur desk!
I have them at my desk but no, I don't bring anything
to the living room to work. I've been on my same accounts with each company I work for since I started with them and I know the dictators extremely well.
I have an advantage with Spheris that I don't with MQ in that I can look up past reports by any criteria - by dictator, by patient, etc., to find anything that is a pattern.
The only book I occasionally reference is Tessier's The Surgical Word Book. Other than that, I have many online refences provided by both companies that they specifically want me to use.
I've done this over 20 years and I'm very fortunate -- I just don't have to look many things up anymore. When I do, it is usually a new product - instrument, drug, procedure, treatment, etc. Yesterday, I had to look up "Fansler speculum", which I had never had before. Probably refer to that book maybe 2-3 times a week. Spheris always sends me a new updated word list that includes newest information about every month. MTDesk has some really good references.
I have well over 70 websites that are "favorites" for reference.
When I travel and want to work, I only take The Surgical Word Book with me.
But everyone had ash trays on their desk :)
The cafeteria was a blue haze of cigarette smoke too even though the smokers could smoke at their desks.
The nonsmokers had to go outside to breathe during lunch instead of the smokers going out to smoke.
Now THAT is a change for the better.
My DH was putting together my new desk and he had
gotten to the deep drawer where files go. He put the frame of the drawer together without putting the bottom of the drawer on. Fortunately I happened to walking through the room at this point and told him he has to put the bottom in the grooves on one side before he can finishing putting the drawer together. He tells me that the directions don't say anything about that. I told him common sense dictates that you have to put the bottom before you put the second side on. Poor man. He is very bright, but has zilch common sense. I'm not very book smart, but have been blessed with my share of common sense and then some, so I guess we made a good couple - LOL.
I believe MT Desk has samples.

height of desk
But aren't most hotel desks sort of high? That is what I was wondering. It does seem like a convenient options. My husband travels a lot, and once the kids are both in college, I would like to start going with him some.
MT Desk clan? More like...
...be prepared to do your own searching for the answers.
MT Desk participants will offer you thinking and researching ideas, but they will not toss you the answers as easily as it is done here or other MT sites. It is managed very differently than other MT sites and the participants adhere to the "teach them to fish" rule.
MTs, especially those of us that work at home, should be able to be self-reliant in this field and possess decent researching skills.
As you've all just experienced last week, what happens in the future if both MTStars.com/net just *poof* from web again? Who will give you the answers, when you are so used to having someone else do the researching for you?
Surely there's been exchanging of harsh words now and again, but I've seen the same thing happen here on this site and others. Major difference is, on THIS site, you can't tell who is making the comments, because on this site, you can hide who you are by changing your name for each post you make, whereas on MTDesk, each person has 1 identity for every post they make. So yes, on MT Desk you WILL see the same folks replying on 'hot' topics as they do not have as much flexibility to name change between posts as is so easily done here.
Clan? I think not. I see it as a group of folks helping other MTs hone their researching and thinking skills, helping you to hopefully become a self-reliant MT.
Sorry to hear you had a bad experience with MT Desk.
LOL- What does an "organized desk" mean????

desk wireless
My desktop is wireless and connected by a router to the modem downstairs in our house. The wireless network is passworded. People can steal from unsecured wireless networks, but a good hacker can probably steal from any network.
I got rid of my HUGE desk...sm
i use a 20 inch widescreen laptop and i just ordered a very small rolling desk. i use wireless keyboard, mouse, and headphones. that way, I can roll my office outdoors when the weather is nice or in my bedroom or any place I will be comfortable as I suffer from chronic back problems.
I have an armoire desk
I love my armoire desk when I am done with work....It closes up so I don't have to look at work at night or on weekends when I don't have to work. My old desk was all open and every time I would walk past, I would get a guilty feeling because I was not working.
Also, when company is over, they don't have to look at all my sticky notes. On the inside of the doors, I stuck some corkboard on them so that I can tack up all kind of notes and a calander, things that I use often.
The only drawback is it does feel a little cramped when sitting there for more than 8 hours, and my books are on a shelf up a little high, so I have quite a stretch to reach them.
Overall, I love it. Hope you find one that works for you.
Keyboard, lap desk, etc.
How have you got everything else set up? I am assuming you are not using the laptop keyboard... I can't do that. I have to have a real keyboard. Have you found a lap desk, or how are you situated that makes it possible to work in bed? I have fibromyalgia.... on flare days, I sure could use the comfort. Thanks for the tip about the foot pedal!
laptop vs desk top
Mercedes -- not sure how others do it, but I have both a desk top and a laptop. I started on my desk top and moved to a laptop, as I make frequent trips to the Chicago area and could take my work with me. I use a zip drive for some of the lesser used materials, so as to cut down on my files on the laptop and basically use my desk top as a backup and where I house my invoices, etc. Just thought this might help. It has worked for me for almost two years.
MT Desk also has samples.

I was responding actually to DECENT MT
...rather than EXCELLENT MT.
:)
Nice attide, though.
I don't know companies that charge 18 to 20 CPL!!! The most I've heard of is 13. Who charges 18-20 CPL, please? And who are they sleeping with??? :)
I lie... I forgot that in mentioning sleeping with..... There was a surgical group whose director's wife started a service and charged her husband and his partners 18 CPL.
They now offshore to India, however.
Where is there a decent company???
I would like to know exactly WHERE to apply to a decent company that is not the same as or worse than MQ? I have checked into several and they all leave a lot to be desired. I have lots of experience, have 99% QA reports, and would like to be paid for it. I have not found anybody who is willing to pay me any more than I am making at MQ, plus they have a lot of rules about strict schedules, etc. that were a lot worse than MQ. I would love to quit MQ, but where is there a better place???? Let's hear some POSITIVE answers for a change----.
How does asking someone which companies are decent
equate into having them do your resume and work for you? That's a stretch. Word of mouth is all we have here because the people doing the hiring are naturally going to make their company sound like the best one out there.
Personally, I am sick and tired of searching for a decent MT job. I've been looking for over month now with no luck. It's not for lack of experience or effort. I'm not unqualified or a lousy worker either. I get really tired of being put on the most difficult accounts right off the bat or being bounced from one account to another for coverage. I want a decent platform that doesn't require you to jump to four different places just to find the header demographics information. Time is money. It's gotten to the point that I don't even know what I want any more. Everyone wants full-time, odd shifts, Tu-Sa, or a C-phone. I've seriously been thinking about going back to selling stuff on ebay because I'm so frustrated. I give up.
That would be the decent thing to do
deleting posts where it is mentioned. It seems very juvenile and shady for them to just delete the posts without any sort of response. If you take a stance on something, you should be willing to truly stand behind your decision. They are acting like they are ashamed of the position they have decided to take on this matter.
That's a decent salary.
.
Then, I would say 9 cpl to 10 cpl would be a decent offer.
Go for it!
Decent money is out there
Most of you know me from this board and I just want to share this with you guys. One of my gals that I met through a nephew's baseball team -- he and her son played together and we go to the same church. She had two terms of medical terminology/some transcription underneath her belt, many years in the law field as a paralegal, etc. She wanted to work at home, make some extra money, etc. I took her in and started her on my psych accounts and the onto some IM accounts. She got the psych accounts quite well but had trouble with the IM. We butted heads several times over scheduling, etc. She did not understand the 24 TAT and so on. But we perservered together. She finally got a job in an attorney's office part-time doing some medical review, etc. and quit me. On good terms. Then last November I helped her land a GYN account that we started off together and I just handed off to her as it was not worth my while to drive 25 miles for what dictation was there. It was my business name and years in experience that landed the job. She took it over and tonight she informed me that she is so glad that I kept at her and perservered with her as she is now making $42 to $45 an hour typing for them. She is like me charges only .12 cpl but because of auto corrects, macro's and shortcuts that I helped her with, she is making good money. If fact in Sept when they add another doctor she is going to quit her legal job completely because she makes more with this account with less hours or if she keeps the legal job she is going to do what I did and mentor and help someone else break into the field. Again these are tape accounts, with pick up and delivery and the little accounts no one else wants but they provide us with a good living. Again, I don't look at the cpl but at my hourly rate and that is what keeps me happpy. She just wanted to thank me for helping her out and I am really happy for her. Yea we spoil our accounts but they reciprocate with decent money. So for those that want your own accounts, keep at it, takes time and patience but you can get there. I had most profitable year ever this year and less hours.
decent money
Better than I would make at a 40 hour week clerical job in my area. Much better. I don't have benefits, but I don't need them because my husband has great benefits with his job. I DO get quarterly bonuses though that are more than my yearly bonus at my previous office job. No, I won't get rich doing this. And yes, I put in a lot of hours. I work hard. I research. I have invested in good reference materials. And I love my job.
What exactly do you consider *decent* money, (sm)
and what part of the country do you live/work in? What's "decent" pay in rural Kentucky or Iowa is food-stamp time in Los Angeles, Portland, San Diego or New York, just to name a few.
in bed, and have a husband with a decent job
.
No decent MTs just excuse to keep pay low. Pay
c
I had some decent Americans,
some decent nurses, and then started getting probably the worst dictator on my account. Is 15 blanks a problem? :o}
Is a decent MT job too much to ask for these days!?!?!?
is it too much to ask for a decent job as an MT anymore? i am so fed up with the big services and how they take you for granted, ignore your requests for help, clunky, time-consuming, line-stealing platforms that i could just scream! (please excuse my lack of punctuation and any type-o's, this is a forum and i just really don't care right now!!!)
i am so sick of sitting at my computer all day long to only get out 500 lines a day and it's not my lack of committment, lack of focus, or any of the like....it's the out-dated, stupid "platforms" we are expected to type in and now they are even setting it up where we're typing in little boxes and not hitting return to go from section to section, i'm sure in an effort to reduce payable characters.
I am just at my wits end. i have been applying for jobs that are not in the field of MT for the last two years and cannot get any replies to jobs besides "work at home" scams and the like.
ANYONE ELSE FEEL ME OUT THERE????
Try 80% ESL with the other 20% on ASR; any decent doctor is on ASR at 1/2 the pay....nm
xxxx
What are you talking about when you say decent?
Would be hard to say, according to what you are used to making. What have you come up with in your calculations?
It's pretty decent
Especially if your account is a tough one with ESLs, etc. 150 lph is nothing to sneeze at. As to getting faster, it's all about your expanders. If you have the same doctors at all, create templates as much as possible for them. Save their phrases, etc. If you type headings for reports, save the headings with the formatting, etc as a macro so you just have to hit one or two keys to bring it up. If templates, don't work, then really concentrate on your regular typing expanders. Any multi word phrase that you use more than once needs to have an Expander or an abbreviation. Any word that is longer than four characters has an abbreviation for me - or at least I'm working towards that. Really work on getting to the point where you don't type any word out in full. That's the hard part. Sometimes it seems like it's faster to just type and not figure out what the expansion is for that word, but it pays off in the long run. The other thing that helps me is to put mistakes in that I routinely type, i.e., teh = the, taht = that. I have found that doing that has made a huge difference - I'm not stopping to correct those automatically any more. Pretty much any typo goes into the library with the correct word attached.
You'll get there. Good luck.
Just had early dinner at my desk, so
my keyboard and mouse are no longer starving. Would not be me if I didn't spill my coke and drop at least 1 fork of food onto keyboard. But at least I keep them well nourished and hydrated.
Our cat (yes we have a zoo) plops on my desk right in front of me - sm
usually on my note pad or a patient list, makes it interesting too. But she doesn't usually stay long, and if the dogs are in she hides ---her and the Husky are mortal enemies, granted it does not help that he tried to eat/kill her a couple weeks go-- our signals got crossed and my husband let the dogs in before I could up up the gates to ensure her safety. Luckily I was right there and was able to grab the dog before anything really bad happened. So my husband learned an important lesson that day...communicate with me when you let the dogs in, or put up the gates first.
If that were me, I wouldn't be able to reach the desk soon! nm
