"The Death" of Medical Transcription
I have to agree with you wholeheartedly. I think it is a shame what has happened to our profession.

It seems that people with 25-30+ years of experience are either transcription service owners or instructors in medical transcription. Very few transcriptionists with
a lot of experience are doing "sweat shop" transcription.

I feel sorry for those students who are being misguided that they will become transcriptionists and be able to work at home and make a lot of money. I am afraid they are going to be in for a big surprise!

I do not understand how medical documentation ever transpired into a production-oriented job. Production WILL have priority over quality when it comes to a paycheck. Why bother looking up terms in reference books or on the internet? That takes a lot of time and can affect an MT's paycheck.

I compare a medical Transcriptionist to a robot -God forbid you go to the bathroom and stop production!

Perhaps a Walmart greeter would be a more pleasant and less stressful work environment!

An MT is a Medical Transcriptionist...sm
Here is a link and some helpful information on desertion in the military. http://www.nationmaster.com/encyclopedia/Desertion

Good luck!
You ARE a medical transcriptionist, right?!
Geez, how idiotic can you be?!

It addresses ALL medical transcriptionists. Again, the new definitions for two classes of their transcriptionists have apparently been updated. That does NOT exclude SEs! LOLOLOL

Ya can't see the forrest for the trees can ya?! LOLOLOL

It is a Medical Transcriptionist
and Medical Editor. I was confused at first too but you can do both. They never had ME's before.
getting a job as a medical transcriptionist
I am getting ready to graduate as a medical Transcriptionist from an online school.  How long does it normally take for a new graduate to get a job?? I have noticed that no one wants to hire a new graduate..
You have been a medical transcriptionist...sm
for 33 years. You have put so many years into this, and I would not give up on it now. If you are making 10 cpl then I think you are making a good cpl amount and I would not give that up. You can always buy some health ins. Why drive up to 1-1/2 hours one way just to work when you have a good job at home?
Right now jobs are scarce. If you take a low paying job with benies and have to drive a good distance gas is going to take up some of your pay and I don't think you would clear very much. You are thinking right, it would be foolish in these times to give up your job for a low paying job just for benies. Don't get me wrong benies are important but you can buy some insurance or find a job in MT that has benies but I don't think your line rate would be as high. I would stay where I am.
A medical transcriptionist must be able to
translate medical jargon and abbreviations into their expanded forms.
registered medical transcriptionist - for those

RMT is Registered Medical Transcriptionist, ...

and CMT is certified.  The RMT is available to new MTs without the 2 years experience required to sit for the CMT.  Both are money makers for AAMT and don't do much, if anything, in the real world of MT.  Sure, there are a few companies that offer a fraction of a cent more per line for the CMT designation, but most MTSOs, as well as the majority of healthcare facilities (from large hospitals to smaller clinics and offices) have never even heard of the AAMT.

Now, before anyone slams me for knocking the AAMT, I am not.  I am involved in a research project for a large project and have investigated the ups and downs and ins and outs of MT companies, schools, job prospects and much more.  The AAMT just doesn't carry the weight they might like people to believe.

And remember . . . The "American" in AAMT is gone.  That says a lot.

RMT=Registered Medical Transcriptionist
A fairly new credential for MTs who are not eligible for the CMT (Certified Medical Transcriptionist) credential yet.  You have to have 2 years of experience before you can take the CMT test.  With the RMT, you do not.
Read it again and it said "The best advice I could ever give is NEVER quit your job...

That's not advice, that's rubbing salt in her wound.  Your other piece of advice about getting a loan is basically stating the obvious.  I'm sure the OP realizes she may have to borrow some money.  I think she was probably asking what should she do about the employer treating her unprofessionally.

Basically, you gave lousy advice and your only intent was to kick her when she was down.

Yes, it's Independent Medical which are normally work comp related and Looooooong...
but very interesting.
Medical transcriptionist melts keyboard with fingertips
Ryan sez, "We have a medical Transcriptionist on staff who has been using the same keyboard for the last 8.5 years. My co-worker replaced it yesterday, and when he first showed it to me I thought someone had taken a blowtorch to it! The most frequently used keys have been completely worn through, exposing the mechanism beneath. Zoom in and check out the indentation on the Backspace key! The keyboard still works fine, so there's something to be said for durability. BTW, it's a NMB Technologies model RT2358TW."

Some people are hard on keyboards -- I tend the blow the contacts on the left side of the board really fast, knocking out the Ctrl, Alt and left side of the spacebar. Charlie Stross's keyboards lose their lettering in mere months, and my pal Seth Schoen types like a machinegun, but I've never noticed any particular wear on his keyboards.

Medical Transcriptionist's Guide to Microsoft Word book
Does anybody have this book?  Is it worth the money to buy it if you are pretty comfortable creating macros and such in Word already?  Just wondering.... I am always looking for new ways to increase my speed and make things easier.  Any info would be great from someone who has this book.  Thanks!

What magazines should I read for MT, Medical, etc?

hello everyone,

I am new to MT and just want to see what magazines or publications do you read?  Any publications that have to do with MT or Medical and Pharm would seem the most logical.

Anything to keep me up to date is appreciated.

thanks all

just read RD and found cool medical breakthroughs.
Go to rd.com/breakthrough. New drugs and device names for us to be looking for in the future.

Hi Donna, thanks for your reply (sm)
The conservatism is interesting; we are looking for more liberal views. Maybe the Boulder area would be nice. I have visited there and really loved it. I would love to email with you, if you wouldn't mind. Thanks again!
I agree w/Donna - I lived 10 yrs....sm
In the 70s, I spent 10 years out west, 4 in Denver Colorado (not far enough SW for my liking and too cold), 3 in Tucson, 3 in Santa Fe, New Mexico (my most favorite place in the US and even have a bedroom all done in the SW style from things I collected way back then).  The real SW culture is wonderful, one IS never bored, all kinds of things to check out and do.  When I die, it's where I want my ashes scattered, over the Sangre DE Cristo Mountains of Santa Fe and Taos.

NASTY prima donna QA people ...

Guys, help me with something because obviously I'm missing a crucial piece of the QA puzzle somewhere.  How is it that QA folks who are PAID both more money than us and also sometimes on an hourly basis (and justifiablly so because of their presumed higher skill level) to fill in blanks GRIPE and COMPLAIN when they are called upon to do so?  I simply don't understand, especially when there are obvious issues with the dictation, i.e. bad sound file, low voice volume, ESL's, etc. (I'm not talking about a situation where an MT may not have given his/her best effort to the dictation [which I don't think at all is as prevalant as some of the prima donnas would have us believe]).  What did they think, that they were going to continue to do the same job as the rest of us but get paid a premium just because they are who they are?

And I'm not at all speaking in reference to those QA folks who are a blessing to the industry in terms of their talent, the nature of their feedback, and their mentoring capacity.  I'm sure, though, that many of you recognize the kind that I am speaking of.

A clue:  If you don't have the patience to fill in blanks and give constructive feedback, then please ... DO US ALL A FAVOR and stay an MT.  The majority of us give the best that we have to each and every one of our dictations, but sometimes we reach an impasse with a particular chart that requires only a second listen to put together a quality final product and get it back to the facility.  We don't need the stress of your nasty, superior attitude and sometimes not-at-all-helpful feedback.

Hi Donna. I posted to you on the autoimmune board

why does the name Donna Littrell sound so familiar?
Does anyone know her?
For anyone that is interested the HR person at Corporate is Donna Jack at ext. 4905 at the corporate
800 number. I suppose we can discuss with her or leave a message regarding this situation in Amherst and hopefully she can directed the problem to someone down there. Enough is enough of this now.
I don't believe in "the one"
Some people are more complacent than others and can have a successful relationship with just about anyone.

Others are harder to please or pickier, and there are people that those folks who fall into this category can have a successful relationship with, and others with whom they cannot.

The key is to find out which TYPE of person is best matched to your personality, your goals, your life-style and find someone like that.

There is no ONE person for each of us, but some personality types that mesh better than others.
"The right way"
I've been in that situation myself. What I have done is, if the dictation is absolutely absurd and I was expected to transcribe it as such, then at the bottom of the report, in very small font, I typed in : transcribed verbatim.
"The Letter"
I got my "letter" from MQ today, and immediately called my supervisor to tell him that once that goes into effect I will no longer to ASR..........  hopefully everyone will do this (or at least the majority) and MQ will hear us ??
"the cone"
When my little boy (dog) was neutered, I thought for sure the vet would make us use "the cone." However, he said to just get an all white cotton t-shirt and you can slip it over the dog's head and the dog's legs fit perfectly in the arm holes. The cotton t-shirts are nice and soft and come down long enough to cover that private area!
I would buy new a Dorland's Medical Dictionary, Stedmans Medical and Surgical Equipment...SM

and Tessier's The Surgical Word Book, 3rd edition.  Books you could buy used I would say would be Stedman's Pathology and Lab Medicine and Cardiology/Pulmonary word book.  These are all the books I use the most during my day.  You could buy other speciality word books as you need them and could probably go used with those.

I wouldn't bother with buying a drug book, new editions come out every year and I just stick to the FDA website and RXList as my drug references.

Also FYI, not a book, but I use my Stedman's Electronic Medical Dictationary a lot.  It's easier to open the program than it is to pick up a huge 30-pound dictionary.

If you put "the patient" you won't need to worry about it. sm
In fact, most accounts want "the patient" due to confidentiality reasons.
she thinks she is "the mama"
riiiiiggghhht.
"The Language of Medicine" sm
is a very good book and very thorough. I would recommend it highly.
Married? When did you know that your mate was "the" one for you? sm

I just got engaged and knew the minute I met him that he was the one for me.  He felt it too - we just waited until we dated a while before making it official.

How about you?

Yes, it begins with a "T" but don't know what you mean by "the line" (see msg)
Yes, that is how I quit, just couldn't take the crap software for one more minute.   I had heard VR was coming, and there was no way, Jose, I was planning on editing any Indians.  My friends who are still there, some are editing, and are making less than half of what they made transcribing.  Boy am I glad I got out of there.  Now work for a company with a great platform, and they don't offshore.

Could you not put like "the patient" in most places rather than he/she? nm

No, she does not.She will be asking us "the govt" to supply her necessities
and we will do it.  You and I, who carry Wal-Mart purses (speaking for myself, of course).  Makes me mad too.  I also noticed the Budweiser can.  Jaundiced eye?  I think not.
I agree with "the word" but it can sure help you transcribe everything
:i
They even say they work for "the company that cannot be named"
Most of the replies are from MQers.

You're caught! LOL

Dum-dum-dum-dummmmmbbbbbbbb!!

Cool avatar, though.
"The big kids" don't like MPI, but I do. It helped me immeasurably when SM

I was first working. I have since bought them as gifts to starting-up MTs. I like the book. I have not seen Stedman's, but I don't generally trust Stedman's at all for anything. I use the books, I have a bunch of them, but I don't like them much. They're just all we have and it's better than nothing.

I think it speaks volumes that they have a "correction card" included with each book.

I've been nicknamed "The Whisperer"

She knows that I an understand people with accents in general, especially ESL as an MT.  So she had me "interpret" for her yesterday.  She tried to cancel a service and the co wanted to assess a fee.  A rep called to let her know that they were waiving the fee, and he left a voice-mail (thick Middle Eastern accent).  She calls to tell me me she only understands that he says [the name of the co] and "call customer service."

So she does a 3-way call for me to listen to the saved voice-mail (Message Center).  I listened, and she said wait and was getting ready to play it again.  I said, "Mom...um...I understand," and proceeded to tell her everything that he said.  Her words, "You understand that?!?"  Yup!  She laughs hard and says, "Hey, I'm going to put you on the Oprah Winfrey show as 'The Whisperer!'"  I think all my neighbors heard me laugh.

dictated "the patient will use acyclovir"
and eScription text on screen was "the patient will use a cycle of beer" HAHA! It's Miller time.
The plastic surgeon on "The Doctors"
is very reputable. I would go to his website (can find through the show's website) and either email him or call for information/opinion.

The key is to deal with someone you know is on the ball and above board.
