profession not based on $ earned, but on specific criteria...sm

Well, lots of people make "tons of money in their own business," i.e. hookers  and drug dealers - doesn't mean it's a profession. A profession is done by professionals - think law, medicine, teaching. MT is just a job. That being said, I'm still far from unhappy and depressed! LOL but it's still just a job. The body of knowledge to do MT is so far from what is considered a body of knowledge (again think law) it's not even in the running. Even a checker at Jewel has a specific body of knowledge. It's the comparison that counts, not the existence. Many people are uninformed about what profession actually means. Do some research, you'll see what I mean.

definitely NOT a profession...criteria are...sm

criteria for a profession are extensive college required, also person's work autonomous. Separate body of knowledge required for work. Think of lawyers. Extensive college, they work independently, i.e. they don't have supervisors, editors, etc., and law has its own body of knowledge. Even nursing is on the edge as far as being a profession, not quite autonomous enough. MT certainly doesn't fit the definition of profession.

I was hired for a specific account/specific

work type.  I've learned the dictators, done the macros, now  they need to hire new MTs because the workload has increased, so they switch me to a very difficult account, doing everything but my normal work type.  Does this make sense?  I'm productive on my original account, not productive on new account, plus I'm majorly stressed. I do ESL 90% of the time but the new account is really horrible, not only ESL but they mumble and the quality of the dictation is bad.  If you took a new hire and put them on this account and they stuck it out, maybe they wouldn't think these dictators would be so bad.  I've talked with the MTSO and they say they'll switch me back and that lasts 2 weeks and then back to this horrible account.   It would be different if they called and said we need you to do this account for a couple of weeks, but it doesn't pay enough for me to do from now on.

I understand this is the way the business is and my griping probably isn't going to help anything, but I just had to get it out.

Line-based vs. hour-based requirement
Hospitals do have an hourly requirement, and generally incentive after a certain line level. MQ only has a line based requirement, which is 12,000 per pay period. The hourly requirement is strange, unless they now plan to convert to an hourly pay plan?
criteria
QA review percentage must be at least 98%.

Percentage of reports sent to QA must be reasonable.

Production must be above minimum, and truthfully if you want a raise it should be well above minimum.

Sometimes to earn a raise you must go above and beyond.

Good luck.

It is strange to me that one of the criteria
is whether the company made money. Gosh.

It sounds to me like they are copping out on paying you period. Especially if by your calculations you earned the bonus.

No communication; no bonus payout ... for me, I'd never type another minute for them again.

Bless your heart.
following a set schedule is only one of several criteria used by IRS
to determine if person is employee or IC.  Regardless, I think you would not find many IC's jobs that actually let you work whenever you feel like it. I mean, the work is promised back to the client by a certain time so how is that going to happen unless people follow a schedule?
If you meet the criteria for an IC, they are right. If you do not, they are just calling you that
:P
Never needed an IEP. 504 plan was enough. BTW, the criteria for using meds is

when your child needs them. In the summer, she doesn't need them. However, she is obviously not able to function in school on her own now, so she needs them. Having an aide to keep poking her and refocusing her is not going to get the information through the distraction so she can learn. And the concentration demand is only going to go up.

So what is it that you expect the school to do for her? Are you going to ask that they provide an aide just for her?

And good Lord, do you know that ADHD meds are the safest meds out there for kids. People think they are some kind of wicked additives, when all they are made of is stimulants. Like you and your coffee every morning. You see far scarier side effects with amoxicillin than you do with Ritalin. Yet the almighty media has parents scared silly of DRUGGING YOUR KID.

Do any companies give raises - if so, what criteria do you have to meet?
nm
If she has earned it they have to pay it is

what I said.   There has to be something in writing or something inferred that there are benefits of paid time off/vacation and if so then she has to be paid.   If there is no such understanding then you cannot expect payment.

I've been through this same situation.

If you earned more than $600.00 for the year, then the

company is required to send you a 1099 form and it must be postmarked by 1/31.

For anyone that is an IC can you tell me why your wages earned are not the same as what your are cr
my accountant explained this but I cant remember the reason we dont get the full amount of credit and can you tell me what percentage we dont get credit for.
This is our profession -- a profession which is dying, I might add. SM

So I should get a hobby so I won't care, like you?  A hobby isn't going to pay the bills.  I can't afford a hobby because in addition to working for a living, I also have to study in a different career field in my spare for fear that eventually transcription will be strictly an offshore operation!

She doesn't even know if she earned the bonus because
she doesn't know what the bonus was based on is everything that I've read in this situation. The co said there would be a bonus, but she has no idea for what or how much. Sounds like the company put out a little snip of info, got the person to work her butt of to "qualify" when there possibly was not a bonus even to begin with.
He hasn't EARNED our respect. (nm)

Still waiting: $60 earned or received? nm
nm
I am making in 2005 what I earned in 1995

Like you and so many others, I have watched my wages as both an IC and an employee go down, down, down.  I worked for a company owned by an MT.  She paid very good wages but sold the company to an Indian company, who got rid of all the Americans except for a few who would accept very low pay.  It's funny...clients want 100% accuracy but they don't want to pay for it.  They agree that they can't just randomly pluck people off the street to do MT, that they have to hire experienced or trained people.  But they don't want to pay us for our experience or our training.  I am doing my last MT job. I have my bachelor degree almost completed and I'm outta here.  The lack of respect for MTs, from employers, other MTs, from offshore companies, from clients, from AAMT, is so disheartening.

Question on this, do you have to pay taxes on this as earned income?
I live in a state where we have income tax in addition to federal. Each year on the money we get back from state, we have to claim as income the next year so we are taxed, get paid, taxes on that, get paid, well you get the idea. I hate to get money and have $$$$ shown as earned income, I am way up there in paying taxes now and don’t need additional taxes on me.
Gotta brag: Just found out my son earned... (see message)
the Presidential Fitness Award for the third year in a row, and my daughter earned the National Award!
Waste of time and hard-earned money
when you can only make may be 1 cpl more if you are a CMT.  They should not charge you, they should just let you take the test and send you the certificate.
B.S. in HIM, earned RHIA, didn't want to be management, found MT came easy to me. nm

BE SPECIFIC, PLEASE
You need to CLARIFY - Not sure why you can't be specific - or is it you don't even know what you are talking about?
how do you do that, could you be a little more specific?

to be more specific....sm..

You, the parent, want something done.

They, the child, want something(s).....

When the something you want gets done by the child...

The child gets something.

Deals and contracts - works every time....*S*

can you be more specific.
nm
How much more specific does it need to be?
It says to save the TEMPLATE to a disk, flash drive, etc. Short of coming over and doing the work for you, now sure what you are asking for. Did you know there's a Help menu in Word that spells out all the details?
More specific help?
I am only using about 25% of my hard drive, and I defrag regularly. I am always getting rid of stuff that I am not using anymore, but my computer is still SUPER slow a lot of the time. It is almost always sluggish, and seems like there is something downloading that I can't see. Does that make sense? I check the running processes and programs and can't see anything there, but there is definitely something going on.
Any ideas on how I can find my gremlins?
Can you be more specific?
There are numerous programs, legit and not so legit, which have similar names. There's a CA Anti-Spyware 2008 (legit) and then there's one referred to as "Zinaps" Anti-Spyware 2008 (which is a trojan). In any case, you need to correctly identify what's actually running in order to know whether it's a threat or not and how to remove it in either case. For the latter (mentioned above), see http://www.precisesecurity.com/threats/zinaps-anti-spyware-2008/

Beyond that, downloading and running either Ad-Aware or Spybot Search and Destroy would presumably detect (and possibly remove) what's running if it's spyware/trojanware.
To be specific...

The "account" that I do - I currently transcribe for only one facility - does not offshore - so only transcriptionists are hired that can produce the work required without needing someone to edit the transcription.  I understand that editing can be in either form - correcting or filling in the blanks of someone who isn't qualified to produce a final document (as in a new transcriptionist's work) or VR (which I have done with past accounts).   As I said, I am fortunate to have that opportunity and not all are so fortunate.  I also have the luxury, because of years of only acute care experience, to have had a choice in who I work for.  I know that isn't the case for everyone.  I am also not currently the sole supporter of my family and I have been in that position in the past.

However, I think that if each of us who personally has the ability to do so - economically-speaking - that we try not to make it easy for those companies offshoring who are asking for our years of experience to train their transciptionists.   In a perfect world.....

anything that does not have a specific board
look to the left

if there's not a spot for it there, then you can post it here

how hard is that? rofl
Is there a specific panel/s you are looking for?

This is specific and helps.
nm
That's not working, could you be more specific please
xx
Yes, you would need the specific software.
DocShuttle integrates with the other pieces of the Bytescribe system which basically allows the software to do the work of uploading and downloading. Without your piece, you wouldn't be able to send or return work.
is this regarding a specific post?

Radiology specific CMT

How can I become a CMT which is radiology specific?  Do I contact AAMT?  It is my hope that the focus of the test is primarily on radiology and anatomy as I have been out of the other fields for such a long time, it would be impossible to pass the test (I have heard the standard CMT test is quite difficult, is this true?).

Thank you and Happy Holidays Inspite of It All!!!!

specific points
Any specific points that you feel are meaningful to you. Whereas in my situation I am going to make the point that I applied at a hospital and intended on working for the hospital and not being outsourced after 10 years. The benefits aren't going to be as good for me, and also with outsourcing like that they put so many people on the account to get that turnaround time real fast that you run out of work. Those are just a few of my points. What I am going to do is make an outline of why outsourcing is a bad idea for the hospital and bad for us on a personal level just to sum it up, and then I am going to proceed on with my letter.
That's a specific problem
that the Canadian gov't has promised to address. I think it has something to do with very expensive MRI equipment and a huge country to cover. I don't think anybody is demanding that their single-payer system be abandoned over MRI delays.

Naturally people who can afford to go somewhere to buy "fast track" care are going to go there. Ever hear about the private Saudi jets lined up in Rochester, Minnesota?
Would you mind being a little more specific
on the hospital? It's always nice to know where there might be some potential job openings if needed.
Welcome to the profession. Get used to it.
x
Consider another profession?
To standardize testing you have to have every single company use one lone resource. What if company A is more concerned with ESL skills, company B is more concerned with oncology, and company C would like to know whether you rock at op notes? How do you standardize testing to cover every area that a given employer might want to concentrate on?
Definitely a profession. This is a
you will get a lot of pessimism and negativity.  I definitely have made tons of money in my own business.  Sounds like low self-esteem on the posters below, unhappy, depressed.
This is not just in this profession but
all over. I sat and waited on a call yesterday (my off day) regarding a piece of property I have up for sale. No call at all. I really hate to leave a message on a recording because most of the time you are ignored. Times have changed and not for the good. I think the majority of my family including my mother and my grandmother who are deceased would probably be shocked at today's life as we live it.
which profession
would you let us know what you decided to do? I'm wondering what I want to do next.
re: which profession
Dental Hygiene...usually takes 2 years but have to do it part time so I can still earn a living so is taking me 4 - I'm more than halfway done though, so can't complain...
our profession

This is old, but has anyone read this??  I must research further what the final outcome was.  While I totally agree with what they are doing and why, I totally DISAGREE with their final recommendation for standardizing line counts. VBC is not the way to do it.

You ask anybody in any profession
They will say they are worth more than they are being paid. That's the way it is everywhere. I make good money sitting at home. My local hospital pays their transcriptionists 9.40/hr. Big deal! I'll rather stick with a MTSO any day.
Our profession/New job

About three weeks ago I began a position with a local health care company (transcribing for local acute care hospitals but part of a national chain).

We are not really transcribing, at least not by my definition (21 years of experience).  Rather, we are recording medical ShortHand (abbreviations [even in DIAGNOSES section], shortened medication names, slang, contractions, etc.).  On the one hand, they claim they want you to type it verbatim (no expansions, additions, etc.), yet OTOH they say to delete redundancies, repetitions, etc., which is hardly verbatim. We are not allowed to expand, add to, or correct ANYTHING except number and tense dictated by ESL docs, who comprise about 60% of the dictators.  In addition, certain dictated terms are to be abbreviated (e.g., "emergency room" transcribed as "ER").

The supervisor had the gall to look me right in the eye and deliver a harangue about how these are "legal documents, and we have to transcribe EXACTLY what they say."  (Conveniently disregarding the bit about deleting redundancies and the other "allowed" changes.)  So ALL of my previous employers, AAMT, etc. did it wrong, and THEIR crackerjack legal department is smarter than everyone else?!     Don't think so.  Cutting costs is the game they're playing; everyone can see that.

Excerpt from a typical report looks like this:  Wrote scrip for vanco 100, patient also to take aspirin 81 and will return next week. I don't think .... [blah blah blah]

AAMT taught me to create a complete, coherent, grammatically correct document that doesn't look like alphabet soup.  Needless to say, I don't feel good about what I am creating and HATE THIS JOB!!

I'm just curious if this is happening elsewhere.  With all of the emphasis on "cutting costs,"  I have to think that it is.

Thanks for listening to my splenic venting.

what specific probs are you having to make you want to
nm
There you go. They hired you for a specific shift SM

What comes with that is that sometimes there is no work. The people who were NOT hired for a specific shift don't have to "save" work for you. They shouldn't have to.

No, I don't sit for 40 hours and then do another 20, but as an IC, if I needed money, this is exactly how I'd get it.

What you do
