In Reply to: Bringing up hurricane discussion - EsTxMT
I have not read the discussion you were referring to, as I just signed on for the first time in awhile and read your post. I think with all the hurricanes this year, we had all better wake up. I am not at all saying that the government should not help those in need, I really think they should. What people in this country should realize is that we cannot expect the government to take care of us when disaster strikes. Certainly those people not living on the coast did not expect to be where they are now, but a hurricane is not the only kind of disaster that can strike. In the age we live in we all need to do anything we can to get prepared, not just in case disaster strikes, but knowing sooner or later disaster will strike. I do not have the money to go out and buy enough nonperishables to fill a bunker, but I can buy a few cans of food a week, or bottled water. I can try not to go home with my vehicle almost on empty. If something happened to us, both me and my husband have elderly parents and extended family who would need help. Heads of households need to get a grip and realize THEY are responsible for the wellbeing of their families, not the federal government. I, for one, think that is how it should be. I know there are people who are disabled and have no family to take care of them. The government should be taking care of these people whether there is a disaster or not. These weather events, as the old saying goes, "caught us with our pants down". These events just brought home the fact that in the long run, good or bad, we are on our own.

Tax Preparation
I usually prepare my own taxes using the 1040 form. However, this year I have quite a few deductions, etc. and feel I might need some help. I checked with a local CPA and he charges $350 to prepare an individual's tax return. Is this a normal fee or is it outrageous? Does anyone know if H&R Block or any other national tax preparation company would be good to use? And what do they charge? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

It's called preparation. Sometimes
questions are really off the wall, or just something you weren't expecting. It sounds like CS is trying to be prepared for whatever questions they throw. One of the last interviews I had, the question I was least prepared for was salary. (It was for a non-MT job and it turned out to be less of a secretarial job and more marketing than I expected, so I was unprepared for that question).

typing test preparation question
Will be applying at a local university hospital for a transcription job. Applied there last year, did not pass the typing test. Am determined to pass it this year - (requesting an ergonomic keyboard which I am used to, instead of testing on what they gave me). Question: They say one must pass a 10 minute typing test accurately transcribing 1437 characters. As I recall the transcription itself was not difficult, it was just using their keyboard that slowed me down. So besides requesting another one, how can I best practice for this? How can I determine how to judge that amount of characters for practice? Thanks for any advice. I am an experienced Transcriptionist with 5+ years.
TechSupport what do you think? IMHO this is all in preparation of EMR, compressing the
long, very narrative and repetitive version of straight transcription. You are building a new software, or at least a software template for EMR. Isn't this it?
