I am so sorry for your loss of your beloved pet and I do hope those dogs are caught. Unfortunately these dogs have been in the hands of many abusers/handlers and taught to fight. My daughter has a very sweet pit bull and two children, but she taught her dog to be gentle and she is good with their other dog also. Just recently a man in Massachusetts was arrested for animal abuse. He was caught in the backyard of his house with a pair of scissors and he cut off his pitbull puppy's ears to make him look more intimidating, how sad is that, he will face a 5,000 fine and jail time and his dogs taken away from him. The vet said the puppy is doing fine now and will be put up for adoption along with his brother.
I was in a store once and at the check out there was a book called "There are no bad dogs, just bad owners." How true is that?
We have a doberman for 10 years and they are considered to be a bully breed, but she was a good dog and we socialized her and would not let her get away with any aggressive behavior.
It is so sad to see all these poor pit bulls multiplying and living with these ignorant people who want to make money by teaching them how to fight, feeding them gun powder, etc. No wonder insurance companies will not insure you if you have this breed. These dogs have come from tiny puppies and grown into monsterous dogs and it is so sad as they mutilate people, and then end up being euthanized. When you own a dog you have to be responsible and keep them in a good environment and not teach them to be aggressive.
Labradors are wonderful family dogs and I know you will miss him and I am glad your other dog was not killed by the bullies. I hope they catch them soon and the people who own them should be locked up also.

That's bulls**t!
You who are holier than thou, how many single mothers do you think have been created because of 911? The Irac war? Cancer? Divorce (my case) because we made a bad choice, and don't tell me you've never made any mistakes. The vast majority of single mothers aren't in their situation by choice. And yes, it is a hard job, so excuse us if we complain just a little. But don't acuse of us of playing a "single mother card" because that's just stupiid. Why, oh why, do we have to put up with this troll over and over again?
that would be SIX bulls only....nm
pit bulls in Boston
If you live in Boston and own a pit bull, you and the dog have to go to a police station and have a picture taken of you together and get a permit to keep the animal. Too many horror stories like yours. I am so sorry for the loss of your beloved pet.
I already run with enuf bulls on the job. nm
There would be two dead pit bulls in my neighborhood
If this happened to me. What if this was a child. I can't believe no one does anything about this in your community.
pit bulls killed Maltese
I am so sorry about your puppy. I saw a pit bull attack a German shepherd in our off-leash park. The owner showed up right after the police -- I and the shepherd's owner were screaming, "Call 911" -- and he gave a fake name and address. He had another loose pit bull, too. Then another of my dog-walking acquaintances said she saw a pit bull kill a dog in that same park and the owner then proceeded to kill the pit bull by bludgeoning him/her. I read that one of every two dogs killed at our animal shelter is a pit. I have a neighbor who drove 1000-1500 miles, to a breeder's place in California, to get a pit bull to protect his wife, that the breeder claimed was completely gentle, just looked scary.
how awful for you!! Pit bulls not allowed
.
That is awful. It is sad that pit bulls are bred....
to be this way. I only wish your yard would have been dog proofed and this wouldn't have happened to your dog. I know you tried to fix the fence, but apparently it wasn't fixed. I would hire someone to fix it once and for all or dig down a couple feet and put chicken wire or plywood to stop them from digging and going under. My sister did this around her chicken coop to keep the coyotes out and it worked. I have two labs and I would never ever allow them to get out.
I really am sorry for your loss and it is horrible. I do feel, though, as responsible pet owners that we all should keep our animals in our own yards whether it is a lab or a pit bull. I'm very sorry.
Have to disagree. Pit bulls have been bred
to be fighting dogs - it is in their blood, just as racing and running is in thoroughbreds blood. I absolutely adore dogs, but would never trust a pit bull, no matter whose it was or how good it had been. You never know when the prey drive will be turned on, or the fighting mode. Traits and characteristics are bred into dogs, and pit bulls have long been abused by breeders for these very characteristics. Then the pups generations later get into the general public, and yes, they have instincts to fight that they often cannot control. It is not the dogs' fault at all, but it is 100% human fault - for over-breeding this killer instinct into them, and for not keeping them under constant supervision. I am so sorry for your loss - we have had several near misses as well, and have a new neighbor with a rottie mix who has already killed several dogs and cats - and by jumping over his own fence and attacking. At least they forewarned us, but we could tell by the maniacal barking and the noise of this dog attacking its own fence to get over it at us. Again, so sorry for your loss. What a horrific experience. At least you still have Flash. Poor Flash. Poor Shadow.
Running of the bulls? nothing but bull
This is once again an example of senseless slaughter of a poor defenseless animal. Shame on you Spain, for allowing this as well as bullfighting to to go in this day and age. Any one who gets thier jollies watching animals suffer is a deeply disturbed individual and I believe this says alot about our society and where we are and where we are going. And we call ourselves civilized? How different is this from throwing the Christians to the lions in ancient Rome? ITs just reversed, only the animals are getting thrown to the humans.

Our next door neighbor breeds pit bulls
and the new mother pit bull gets out of their fence after the owners go to bed. She comes over here and jumps at my windows and doors (I have two small dogs). She wags her tail like she is friendly and barks to get in. A vet lived in this house before I did. I won't open the door though I feel she may be friendly. It scares me that she gets out of their yard and you see all the small pit bulls out during the day.
I am so so sorry for what happened to the OP's lab. I feel that they should ban the breeding of pit bulls. Too many horrible things have happened with this breed of dog.
Tomorrow is the running of the bulls in Pamplona...
Anybody going? http://www.condoradventures.com/images/runbull_medic.jpg
My husband was attacked as a small child by pit bulls...
and he still owned two of them when I met him. This is my second marriage and I have two children (4 and 7 at the time). I refused to bring my kids to his house with the dogs there. He eventually found homes for them. One ended up being put down because it attacked someone and the other had to be put down later for killing the family cat. These were dogs my husband "trusted." Never...never would I allow my children or animals around pit bulls. It is sad, but like you said it is instinct from years and years of breeding for that purpose. So sad for all.
