I have wasted so much time trying to
figure the SH program out before it dawned on me to come on and ask. Wish I had done it a lot sooner. All of you have saved me so much time and I certainly appreciate all the feedback.

well, actually i had responded and given her the answer so it did waste my time. sm
if she was only doing "practice tapes", why try to be so perfect? Practice tapes to get an idea of the profession doesn't mean trying to find out exactly what each word is. i am not usually tacky on this board and don't like it when others are but i did consider that a waste of my precious time to help her when it sounded like she didn't need the definite answer just to get "an idea" of the profession and was most likely needing test answers. someone in the medical field should know those terms.

That is good advice, but I don't know if I can give them 30 days notice because another 30 days of them and I'll end up in a padded cell. I'm thinking more like two weeks, which to me seems fair, especially considering if they found someone else to do the work for less, they wouldn't even give me a day's notice, right?

I was merely pointing out that it was possible that you don't need to spend the time or money to do all of that since I apparently wrongly assumed that you knew what you were doing. So much for the assumption that you were totally aware of all that the process involved. You're lucky that after reading your response to the original post that someone even wanted to bother answering your question.

I was thinking macros were something else. I make heavy use of templates/normals, but I didn't realize those were called macros :0)
Shorthand is so fantastic for that. I love the suggestion window, too. I don't think I could type without it now.
Do you use the TCL script program? I need to study up on that.

Just because you wasted your
time & money for an organization that has screwed over American MTs doesn't mean others should too. The OP needs to know the truth. For your, what, half a cent or so raise, you get to pay dues, take nonstop extended credit courses, etc.... Been there, done that. Not worth it. And now that they push VR and offshoring, they'll NEVER get another dime from me!!!

That's what happens when you have people in charge of MTs who HAVE NEVER TRANSCRIBED!
They think we can just sit down.........turn on the "machine" and just spit out transcription because we know medical terminology. WELL SORRY - IT DOESN'T HAPPEN THAT WAY.
Yet they want HUGE LINE COUNTS.
They aren't going to get good TATs or HUGE line counts flipping me from one hospital to another at THEIR LEISURE.
Somewhere along the line they have me CONFUSED WITH A MACHINE

Don't do it! I wasted my money when I joined, and
I will NOT be renewing. They support offshoring. They're trying to get an RMT exam up and running now, hoping that it will become essential to employment (right now it's elective). They support an apprenticeship program on which they helped get the ball rolling with AHIMA. This program hasn't come out yet but will if they can iron out the wrinkles. This program calls for TWO YEARS of apprenticeship making practically minimum wage to start and not ending much higher than that. It will only accept graduates from AAMT-approved schools, and it's going to drive the MT pay rate down even further! As if we need that!
And I could tell you more stories!
I just gave notice at my job and all I gave them was when my last day would be. SM
I don't think they even cared why I was quitting. I called the supervisor to tell her in person and she simple said "I need it in writing and when will your last day be". Personally, I like things quick and painless.

I had a call-in sytem that used sound files (wasted money)
I spent several hundred dollars trying to clean up voice files, both with an expensive external sound card system and very expensive computer speakers with a pod for a headset. I finally ditched the system and purchased a call-in system accessed by a C-phone. Be weery of those sound files. The clear ones do go overseas while us Americans get the worst of the batch.
Simply put....
These are people's lives and people's health. I am NOT going to guess because their doctor doesn't give a crap and refuses to dictate clearly so lets his MT guess what he's trying to say and hopes she/he gets it right.
I swear, this group might as well have farted or belched it all out - it would probably have been understood better than they way they dictated it. And I'm not talking medical terminology either. I'm talking basic simple English words that they slur all to you know where that is imperative to each patient's record.
I know to some $$$$ is what counts. Call me an odd ball because to me, integrity and knowing you did an accurate job is what counts. I can't do an accurate job without the doctor's help when it comes to dictating clearly. It takes two in this business - the doctor and the MT -to get it right. So ask me if I miss them.

and then copy and paste it into the shell for Meditech. I hated Meditech as well. Yes, I did get used to it, but it is not MT friendly AT ALL!!!
If I would guess though, your Word would work well since the spellcheck is better. Try a small report, and see what happens.

There is no way a reasonable adult would not understand that. If they bark (or bite), it means they simply don't care about the people who work for them.

I know you have very strong convictions and I think it is wonderful, but isn't it funny how we follow and obey the bible in some instances and don't in others. The bible is a guide for us to live by. No more, no less! I don't care personally. I just think that HIPAA thing is so over-the-top that this one jumped out at me. I see why they have it, but sometimes it's a bit much. My sis is the CEO of a Hospice in Chicago, and says it's a nightmare for them, so it depends on which side of the issue one is on at the moment.

I question that part of HIPAA regulations. If a person can't match the demographics to a report, what is the freaking big deal that its confidentially be protected? So what if anyone sees you're typing a report for "someone" with symptoms A, B, and C? Aren't there zillions of people with those symptoms worldwide? Unless you're in a teeny town typing reports for the ONLY hospital where it's possible only ONE person could have a report like that, its really crazy to think that the average layperson, even in they could understand WHAT they were reading in a report, could figure out from any given report WHO that report was for, or even what hospital in what part of the country. Without the demos, WHAT security is breached and HOW is it considered a security breach????
I'm also over having to have a zillion constantly-changing passwords so I can sit and type in my secure house! The amount of programs I have to use to type a single report are so complex and aggravating that unless someone came in here who works for the exact same company, nobody would have a clue how to go about bringing up a report and rooting through the demos. And who the heck would even WANT to?
I can see the need for HIPAA inhouse, where there are tons of people who know the system floating around, patients around looking and listening, and local people knowing stuff about other locals. But in the case of the remote, isolated MT, who will never meet a single doc, patient, or facility she types for, making us jump through HIPAA hoops is tiresome and pointless - especially since our Indian bretheren typing the same exact reports don't have to worry about it!

but how would that help you learn to research on your own...and I'm in a rush to get to the next post.

I'm simply saying that all aren't making the
kind of money you think they are because they have a lot of expenses but that the ones who are should be making good money considering everything they have gone through to get to that point (all those years that they were going through medical school w/o making ANY money usually). If there wasn't a good payoff noone would go through it. That's just my opinion.
