When we applied for a mortgage and they saw we were through a credit counseling, they would not approve it and said it would've been better to have just filed bankruptcy. Credit counseling looks worse than the bankruptcy. Besides that, the ones we had counseling for us, screwed up 2 of our credit cards by missing payments and ended up paying a huge fee for the credit card. I'd try working with the creditors yourself.
