my boyfriend's union has helped him to be laid off 6 months this year already...

Sure Union's PROTECT the workers... okay that's fine. but they also do plenty of other stuff that is not cool with me. I like the idea of them getting paid a good amount for what they do, but then there are times when if something happens on a job, for example, two workers get in a fight, they may get fired from that particular job, but re-hired with another one that hires union workers. It makes no sense. Obviously I see the point of unions so workers are not taken advantage of... but like someone else posted, someone would sneak away to sleep during her job with the union. I mean, have you seen DOT workers? Cal Trans ? i dont think I EVER see them working and I'm gonna guess they are a union (although I can't be sure).

For sure transcription needs something, but I don't think a union is it. Although I don't think we will ever have anything to protect or help us... too little "higher up" people know the problem.

Mine are in year-round thank goodness! They've started their new year 2 months ago.

Yes, helped for about 1 year, then same symptoms returned.
Just had hysterectomy last year. Never felt better. No pain, no cramps, no heavy bleeding and I can leave the house and not have to worry about blood running down my legs any more. The ablation worked in decreasing the heavy menstrual flow for about a year. Then it returned with the pain, etc. I have had endometriosis and ovarian cysts since I was 13, with many laparoscopic cystectomies, etc. I am now 38. I finally know what a normal pain-free life is like.

If you do decide to go with the ablation, get the NovaSure - it takes less than 5 minutes to perform and better results than ThermaChoice.

Good luck.

At first I thought they were wonderful  but my last account had so many docs and so many specialities I just finally gave up and faded into the sunset.... they never even missed me.  I also found QA to be very rude sometimes - depending on which account you were on.

I quit two months ago. I tried to quit for over a year, but I just had to be ready.
I tried the patch, NRT gum, Zyban, everything. One morning, I woke up and just quit cold turkey. There are some good online support groups out there that can help you when you're ready.
Boyfriend who is depressed.
A great therapist I used to work for would tell folks in your situation, that you ARE not trained in counseling, therefore, you can not help him in the way he needs. It's just not your job so to speak. Go easy on yourself, it sounds like you have been very supportive, you now just need to decide how long your willing to do so.
You should take the boyfriend out of the equation. sm
I don't understand what you mean financially you can't leave? I'm a single mother (divorced) with twin boys age 11. My net income is about 2,000 a month and I get child support of $500.00 a month. I'm sorry but the phrase "I stayed because of the kids" is no good. I do believe you need an emergency fund.
My daughter is 10 also and just had her first boyfriend...

I was very upset about it at first.  At my friend's suggestion, I sat down with my little girl and asked her exactly what she thought it meant to have a boyfriend.  I asked her if they would be holding hands, if they would be kissing.  She was shocked and a little embarrassed, but I'm glad we had that talk because I don't think it occurred to her that he might expect those things.

I also made it very clear that young relationships last days, not years.  So, when he broke up with her after 27 days (she counted) she wasn't all that shocked and probably took it better than she would have if we hadn't talked about it.

Horizontally, but my boyfriend has to cut his off and eat it
He had his two front teeth knocked out as a teenager playing baseball. They fixed his teeth, but he can't bite down into anything like that...corn on the cob, apples, etc. So he cuts it off with a knife and eats it.
Please help with "discussion" with boyfriend (argument)

Boy, I love that this board is available.  I'm an IC and only have catastrophic insurance so there's no mental health access available for me.

Anyway, here it is:

1.  I've noticed over the years that my boyfriend has periods of what seems to be a depression. It impacts his treatment of me, it then kind of upsets our routine and, of course, it upsets me. It seems that NOTHING I do or say can get him out of it.  In fact, the perkier or more cheerful I try to be, the more he withdraws (I must pretty get annoying, too, do ya think? with all that perkiness).  So I just try to stay out of his way and it usualy doesn't last more than about 10 days, usually more like 3-4.  Sometimes he can go up to as long as a month or two without one of these episodes.

2.  When I try to talk to him about my concerns he generally goes into a denial thing.  It's usually a given, with him, that anything wrong in our relationship or even sometimes in his relationships with others, is absolutely my fault, but that's another story.  So when I mention casually or carefully that he seems down, is everything all right it kind of makes him get mad and aggressive and usually he will say "yeah, WHY?" kind of in an ugly way.  So as I said, usually I say nothing.  On occasion, he has admitted that he gets down at times but that's all he'[ll say, and then later he doesn't seem to remember that he admitted this.

3.  A while back I approached him about his depressed mood and he got kind of defensive.  I mentioned that he acts particularly down around his brother and that his brother had said that he noticed he seemed depressed quite a bit lately and thought he was "suicidal" although I think the brother was just kind of exaggerating on the suicidal thing.  I only mentioned the brother commenting on his being down because, as always, my boyfriend usually denies any problem, and says it just my making things up.

4.  Today my boyfriend got very angry that I had told him that his brother said he thought he seemed depressed - what kind of a girlfriend would mention something like that.  I said "a caring one" and should I just "pretend nothing is wrong" and no one else sees this either?  I said it wasn't meant to be an attack but a reaching out.  A couple other folks have seen my boyfriend in his depressed state and commented on it also (I have never told him that).  I said one of the reasons I mentioned his brother's comment was because he always negates what I say, tells me it's basically all in my head, nothing is wrong with him....blah-blah-blah.

5.  He asked me how I would feel if my family talked to HIM about them thinking I was depressed.  I said I would be touched and concerned and most of all would feel like they really cared about me.  I certainly wouldn't be enraged.  He says I am lying about that.  He said it over and over that I couldn't possibly feel that way.  I said that depression is not like calling someone dishonest or cruel, that it's out of that realm completely.  That when people ask about how you are doing that they care about you.  He laughs cruelly at me when I say these things.  He also says this has driven a wedge into our relationship, that he can't trust me and that all I want to do say mean things about him.  I say "huh, what in the heck are you talking about?"

6.  Incidentally his sister committed suicide after cycles of depression for many years.  The family knew she had problems but didn't really get involved or try to contact her or do an intervention in the weeks before her suicide.  Most of all, they didn't talk to each other about what was going on either.   I was thinking this was perhaps family tradition to turn away from highly charged emotional issues?  I don't know, as I said, I don't operate like that.  I'm more from the school of "hey, there it is - let's talk about it.  But everytime I try to talk about it he denies it or tells me I'm lying.

laid off
I know this because my husband has been "laid off" a lot lately!
I did when I was laid off

(fired, with no intention of hiring me back) along with a whole bunch of other MTs when our work went to the Philippines.

This employer really played some games.  First they said work was going to get thin because some accounts were being 'lost' and people might be let go.  A month later accounts were booming, and getting way out of TAT and it was ALL OUR FAULT and why weren't we picking up the slack?  (I later figured this was the transition period as they switched over to offshore, and something got screwed up.)  Then work slacked off again and they said people were definitely going to be let go and we should start looking elsewhere.  A couple weeks later they said that they could probably find places for most of us on other accounts, and we should ask for a transfer, which I did.  Then I got jerked around by the HR person who would not return my calls or respond to my e-mails for a couple of weeks.  Then the account managers she finally referred me to did the same for another couple of weeks.  This all took about three months from first inkling to the axe falling.

Then one glorious morning I got an e-mail notifying me of a MANDATORY conference call, with 2 hours' notice.  And everyone on that call, 30-40 of us, were the lucky winners, and were locked out of the system.

A couple of weeks later (while I was still in the 30-day waiting period in my state to file for unemployment) I got a phone call from the same HR person who had given me the runaround before.  Did I want to reapply for a job with them?  Well, not really, but I went through that whole process -  as though they did not even know me.  And weirdly enough, with 15 years of experience, I managed to fail an untimed open-book test!  Fascinating.

So here's what I think the game was (and I am telling you so you don't fall for any tricks.)  They tried to scare as many of us into quitting as possible. Then they tried to ignore as many of into quitting as possible.  (If you quit, 99.9% of the time you don't qualify for unemployment.) Then when they were forced to lay us off, they offered the jobs back to see how many would go for it; maybe 10% of us did.  (If they offer you work and you refuse, then you don't qualify for unemployment.)  But since I went through their whole reapplication process, and they did not hire me back  (and never intended to)  I DID qualify for unemployment.

Hope you are an actual employee and not an IC, and that this info is helpful.  Unemployment is not big buck$ but with summer coming, maybe you can have a nice semi-paid vacation while you look for work.

I wish you luck.  My luck was that about a month after I was let go I broke my arm.  I would not have been able to work for the creeps anyway!  I filed for unemployment online. I was able to do all my job hunting from home, hunt-and- peck, online.  Nobody saw me.  And magically, just when I got the arm back in service again, somebody wanted me to test and I got the first job I tested for.  The whole time I was one-armed and applying for jobs like mad (a requirement for getting unemployment) and wondering what I would do if a company was seriously interested, absolutely no offers.  As soon as I could actually type again, there was a job offer.

Think bad stuff doesn't sometimes happen for good reasons?  Think again!!

My boyfriend ordered me flowers last week from....sm
1-800-flowers but they dropped the ball and still haven't delivered. They sent him an e-mail at 6:30 last night stating that they wouldn't deliver as promised yesterday and we've both had a lot of problems getting through to a "human" to get this resolved. They still haven't been delivered and it's now 1:15 p.m. the day AFTER Valentine's Day. So much for ordering ahead and paying an extra "delivery guaranteed on time" fee.
My daughter met her boyfriend on Myspace. He's an wonderful guy.
Be careful, yes, but don't automatically assume that everyone on a specific site is out to do harm. It just isn't so.
My boyfriend who is a school bus driver now makes more than me...
by $1.00 an hour. Only because they have a union, I guess, because the trend now would be to make them slave labor, as well....but their union holds on by a thread...

I have been an MT for over 14 years, started in the hospitals making what I make now, and am now working for a company (top of the line in the business) who says to stay competitive the MT pay has been cut. I was told to work more hours to make up the difference.

This is no longer a profession, and I think if we are suddenly required to be certified (which the AAMT is pushing very hard), I would highly contest this as I no longer consider myself a professional. We get paid only per line, lose our health benefits, if we do not work a required amount of hours, and are treated as laborers, not professionals.

Does anyone know, if any other 'professions' require certification for nonhourly positions, no guaranteed work, and no real long-term job security...

For myself, I can barely pay my rent now, there is no way I could afford a certification.

In other words, I would be expected to act as a professional, but would never ever be treated as one. I mean, what would WE get out of it?

Does anyone care anymore about people. When I first started working at 14, every job I ever had employees were always treated like they mattered...and were the heart of the job, the old 'we are nothing without the employees' - that is all thrown out like trash now and the mantra is we are nothing, we do not matter, we can be replaced, shut up and just do your work, your paycheck is your reward. What a bunch of crap and what a way to keep people down.

I was in shock when I saw my paycheck, and my boyfriend is making a whole dollar more an hour than I am...and that was a good, full 2 weeks of work for me, with the most lines I have typed since being with this company.

Can you imagine...
The pt is layed off or laid off from her job?

Don't worry - unless you were laid off

Or there is a switch to true EMR with drop down screens and virtually no free text.  My cardiologist's office already has this.  No chart notes to type anymore; they only need transcription for letters.

You may train your system so well that administration will decide they don't need you anymore.  The system doesn't have to be perfect (human transcription certainly isn't!); it only has to be *good enough*.

Laid-off Acusis MT...

Stay away from Spheris.  They're a terrible company to work for, and they put out garbage work.  They, too, will end up losing the "big" account (which DRC did lose before the Acusis buyout).  I am one of the stragglers left behind at DRC/Acusis, but not for long.  I'll take the gum chewing, mumbling, flatulent, ESL cardiologist any day of the week over being told someone in India is going to train me on a new account.

Let's remember, the OP is not the one just laid off....sm
It is her FRIEND, and therefore the OP is adding her own spin to it.
lain or laid
Using Webster's dictionary, the past tense of lie is lay, past part. is lain, so this would be lain.
laid back?
The term marshmellow was used by a group of light-hearted transcriptionists at an AAMT conference once.  We used it as a code name when stresses were high (and in this business, stresses are high).   We ususally got chuckles when we used it.  I really did not expect anyone to know this, except that particular group of people.  We used it for years amongst our networking days.  (We were all from different parts of the country.)

laid-back company?
Well yes I did clinical & Basic 4 for a very laid-back company in L.A. for 7 years & it was great, after they got to know me. But I finally got laid off & worked for MedScribe (Jax, Fla.) doing Rad for 6 months until last week. The first time my production got a little low, BAM they ended my contract & that was IT. So it would be nice to find a little more laid-back company again. If you want a referral bonus, I have 17 yrs MT experience, type 90+ wpm, & I'm available & looking.
They laid off over 200 people at the plant
near me.  I'm sure there have been layoffs elsewhere.  I'd say that is the problem not waiting on parts.   When they opened the new plant here one of the requirements was that all suppliers had to be within 30 minutes of Dell.

My best friend and fellow editor laid off this close to Christmas! sm

For everyone complaining about his or her jobs, it could be worse.  My best friend, who has been in this business for years and years and years, has a work ethic like nothing I have seen before, and is a genuinely caring and gentle soul, was laid off today from her job via a conference call!  To add insult to injury, she is scheduled to have two surgeries next month, which she scheduled for after the holidays to accommodate her employer, even though she can barely see, which she will now be unable to have since they are terminating her health insurance today as well.  They were aware of her scheduled surgery and knew she had been waiting for some time to have it.  We will not even talk about what impact this has upon her family, including her young son, particularly here at Christmas time.  How do you explain no Santa to a young child?

She is always the person helping everyone else, both in her personal life as well as professionally.  I have witnessed her struggles and she always keeps a positive outlook.  I think this will finally "do her in."  Please keep her and her family in your thoughts and prayers, as well as the other THIRTY people who lost their jobs today.

They say that everything we do comes back to you ten-fold.  I hope it happens quickly for this heartless company.

I have kept my child home with me half the year, but when pre-K started I began working full time. Helps to only have a main account and one backup account for the 2nd year now, so my abbreviation program rocks and rolls when I focus.

What union? lol Please tell.

Union
I wonder if it is possible for MTs to organize. This is a profession that requires a good amount of training, skill, and responsibility.  We should be able to make a living at it.  There is something really wrong here.
union..
very interesting concept, but one has to keep in mind, transcription is a very degrading job nowadays as there are alternatives for companies i.e. outsourching, voice recognition, etc...so, everyone needs to just face the fact as I have so degradingly done so....there is no respect or money in transcription anymore! Try being on your own and raising children on "transcription wages"...not gonna happen!
I'm not in a union now but used to be...
It depends on the union.  We MTs need a union badly.  I'd say go for it.  I used to belong to the American Auto Workers Union (about 30 years ago).  DH belongs to an electrical union.
Anyone union here?
I have been offered an MT job that requires me to be in a union. Anyone in a union? Pros, cons?

TIA
Union for MTs
I am sorry, but I do not agree with you about a union for MTs. I have been married for 25 years to a man whom I have seen fight for everything in his union, pay union dues and watch the lazy people get away with everything they possibly can either due to the fact that they were hired by a friend or just are not hard workers to begin with. My husband is a hard worker, goes to work every day, does not steal, sleep on the job, smoke dope on the job, and these are just a few of the illegal practices that go on. He is now the shop steward and he does not recommend a union as he does not see in 15 years that his union has done that much for raises, benefits, etc. It just seems that unions some how represent a lot of people who do not want to work and hide behind a union to get away with it. Of course, some people do get fired, because unions will not stand up for the law breakers, but the others use it as a crutch. Our government has to stop sending our work overseas, but as long as the companies can save a few million dollars by sending our work over, they will continue to do it because it is the dollar that rules. But, our government is at fault here. Unions can work sometimes but not all the time. But, this is my opinion, and I have been in the MT business for over 30 years. I have seen the quality of the work from overseas and so have doctors, and some are appalled, while others could care less, because they save money. It is just like China making toys or dog food with poison and lead poison, our country needs to stop having them make these things, but they won't because labor is cheap over there. All of this is truly sad that we have to pay a price to save a few dollars. What is wrong with this country?
MT Union
I am fully in agreement that we need an MT union, particularly to protect our profession and stop those who do not know our profession from taking over and making decisions that they know nothing about. Everytime I have worked for a hospital, all the decisions as to our equipment, typing platform, pay et cetera have been made by the board of directors of that institution who know nothing about what we do. The last hospital I worked for, the supervisor was told not to make any noise about sending our work offshore. We knew nothing about this until later, and lo and behold this failed miserably, and we could have told them it would. The quality of work was deplorable, yet we worked with horrible equipment and for low pay, but they thought they were saving money. How about putting the same money they would to offshore work into better equipment and better pay. Yes, I would fully support a union.
UNION
Now you're talkin'!! We deserva a union - we're being taken advantage of by all of these companies! How do we get started?
