I don't believe medical dictation will be taken over by VR, because it has limitations. Medical transcription still needs an intelligent human being to verify everything; insurance companies and other care providers still need clear documentation; we have time constraints in returning completed work, and medical transcription is not something that can be fully automated, despite that large transcription companies would like us to believe that. Recently I read somewhere that Bill Gates said VR will not be perfected in our lifetime.
Whether it's through straight transcription or VR, WE are the ones who do the biggest part of the work, and all its nitty-gritty details. It takes intelligence, experience and hard work to do this kind of work well, AND make decent money at the same time - especially these days - but it can be done, given the right circumstances.
My apologies for digressing from the original subject, and if I offended anybody given the current economic problems, but one more thought. I have been thinking about all of these things a long time and just feel they need to be said, and especially considered by people just getting into MT. Many people here complain about their job, and I sympathize, but if you're not making the money you want, and can't find a way to improve what you are doing and/or enjoy your job, you really need to think about doing something else. Even with a recession going on there is still opportunity if you look for it. Life is too short.
