if you do your job, who cares if poster was released from prison. weren't companies hiring prisoners to do MT anyway and weren't they doing credit card customer service?

Enough with invasion of privacy
Its is all getting so frightening, the invasion by companies into peoples lives. I have worked at nine hospitals, two trans companies on-site, three trans companies at home and never have I had a background check OR drug screen. The policy for drug screening at the hospitals was if you seemed like you were under the influence your boss could request a drug screen but never happened to ME or any of my coworkers. Physical exam, sure I got those when I worked at the hospitals but they paid for the physical exam and they also covered me for insurance. The trans company I work for now does not provide medical coverage or life insurance coverage for statutory employees, so I dont see why they would be concerned about my health status. Lets face it, they are concerned with how much we can pound away each day and that is it. We get paid for what we produce. So under these circumstances, they dont need to be poking their nose IN my background, my urine or my physical body. If it is checking on my experience, well they already did that by talking to previous employers and coworkers and guess I passed the test, as I was hired.

BS pure and simple. Nobody and I mean NOBODY is making $36/hour in this profession.
I have almost 20 years experience and the best I can do on a good day where I have few interruptions and have been chained to my PC for 8 straight hours I can make $20 per hour, MAYBE $25 but that is pushing it. And I have my own accounts and have used my Expander to death.

Give these people a break. They come here asking experienced, professional people for help and what do they get? Condescending, idiotic remarks like the one you just posted. Honestly, everyone gets stuck on simple words that make no sense to them. We have all been there. Give these people a break and stop sounding like a moron. I hated remarks like yours when I was a newbie and I refuse to talk like that to other newbies. New transcriptionists are required to ask questions, not guess, to produce a quality document. Some of those "simple" things can sometimes be the hardest to figure out. Go ahead and flame me. It will show what your true character is.

LOL...I HATE spiders with my ENTIRE BEING!!! I just came back into my office after a shower. I got my creepy crawly visitor surprise when I had gone upstairs to my room to shower, turned on the light, and as I was turning away from my vanity I caught sight of a dark blotch on my ceiling...looked directly above my head and there he sat...and since the ceiling is 12 FT in there, all I could do was scream for my husband, like a baby! UUUUUUUgh is right!
Protect ears where you can
I recently bought a new blow dryer that is louder than my old one. I have started putting cotton in my ears while blow drying, and it muffles the high, painful whine. I suddenly have more patience with styling my hair, so I guess it may have been bothering me before this, too, and I didn't realize why I could hardly wait to finish.

If they question why you have a password, say that you had to for compliance issues, which really is what you should do anyway. I have my computer set up so that after 20 minutes of being idle, I have to reenter my password. They really should ask before using it. I feel that my work computer is for my use only, so I don't feel guilty about not sharing it.
How to protect our jobs . . .
I learned that Focus Infomatics (transcription service) is an alliance of Nuance, the company who owns eScription and Dragon voice recognition programs. Apparently, Focus Infomatics sends a majority of their dictation to India, and the pay to MTs in the U.S. is below minimum wage. I think we should avoid working for Focus Informatics, as well as avoid attending or promoting the Career Step MT program. Career Step promotes and supports Focus Infomatics. This may be a small step in the right direction for MTs who deserve higher wages and to be treated with respect.
Well, I bet it's because CA has laws that protect
workers, so certain skeevy companies at least don't want to hire them because then they would (horrors) have to pay them when there is no work rather than pay them nothing while they sit waiting for work. That's just one of the protections we have here in CA. IMO

Has anyone used the Eden Pure Heater as a supplement?
I hear Paul Harvey advertise this heater on the radio all the time and I am considering it for our house for this winter. I just wonder how much it might really save us since we use propane to heat and this is an electric heater. It sounds good according to what I have heard and read but obviously I don't really know.
I am in my home office most of the day and thought I could turn our furnace down low as there is no need to heat the entire house when I spend at least 8 hours a day in my office and I am the only one at home during the day. I could just close my office door and use this heater and maybe save some $. We have a 1600 sq. ft. home, one level, and we spent about $1900 for propane last year (including hot water heater and gas cooking stove). I wore thermals and warm clothes as well as used a snug snack while working but I am always cold and had the thermostat turned up to 72 during the day and 66 at night.
I will post the link for those that might be interested in knowing more bout the heater.

and possible identity theft. We are not living *back before politically correct* any long and we need to protect ourselves in ALL areas of our lives, including the privacy of our medical records. Your grandparents' medical records and information are not yours to give away. That is up to them. Perhaps they do not want your child's school knowing all of their information. What if someone at that school happened to know those grandparents, found out about their medical history, and started blabbing it all over the place. This is what medical record privacy is for..to protect those that do not want it divulged to just anyone who asks for it. It may not bother you, but it bothers others, and that should be a protected right. This is just my take on privacy.

To some people, Jesus Christ was not the Son of God. That's how they believe. To them, he was a fictitious or a historical character and there's no blasphemy involved.
If you do cringe (I haven't seen the ads for it) then not watching it is the right decision for you, but not everybody feels that way. :)
I think they are violating your privacy
I'd check it out on the ALCU web site if you don't find anything regarding that there email them and ask about it... or Google in workplace privacy. I think they are way out of line when it is your personal computer and not theirs. If it's theirs they are within their rights

Privacy question.
I do occasional IC work for a provider that I have known a while now. Today i did some work for her and found something that really bothers me. The physician dictates the patient's full name, street address and home phone number in addition to her DOB. Is that HIPPA compliant? I'm sorry folks but I really don't want my street address and phone number available across the internet even if it is "so called" secure. I would like your thoughts.

Needing to know if anybody feels same way
I wanted to post because I have had a very eerie feeling lately and wanted to see if anyone has been experiencing a similar thing... I was a home MT working directly for a hospital for many years and a high producer. Then, the hospital cut our incentive and many of us ended up with a MTSO after that. Well, after being with the same job for many years, I spent over 2 years with the MTSO and found out that my line counts were very low because the platform was not counting my lines in a well honest (to me) way. I thought I was losing my talent, but after finding out about this for sure by looking at the minutes versus the lines over a couple of weeks and checking with other MTs (finally) I found out it was not me. I since have been working for a very reputable MTSO (no hospital jobs around directly that I could find by me) and something is happening. I am struggling to get my line counts again, and I did a study with the minutes and though not as bad as the other MTSO, the same thing is happening AGAIN! (dont mean to yell, just emphasizing). It is so hard to look for yet another job...My question is this: Is it my imagination, am I just losing my talent and my mind, or are most jobs now counting the lines differently than before say 3 years ago when I left the hospital job. And, if I can't produce that much anymore because they count lines differently now, how does one find at least a job which is moderately easier to get more than minimum? Look, I used to make over 50K a year and now I am eeking out perhaps 27 a year and feeling like I am losing my talent. Any advice would be appreciated here. I don't want to go through job after job, stress after stress. BTW: My husband will be able to provide benefits in a couple of months, but until recently I have been the one to have to provide health coverage and this has figured heavily into where I work. Thanks in advance for your opinions. I don't want my hand held, just a little reality check. Thanks in advance.

The HIPAA Privacy Rule...(sm)
...requires a covered entity to make "reasonable efforts to limit use, disclosure of, and requests for PHI to the minimum necessary to accomplish the intended purpose." The only AHA-approved HIPAA training program, HIPAA Academy, specifically states in its training materials that HIPAA intends that personal information be limited to document headers unless absolutely required I will quote page 4-56:
"In practice, we expect the minimum-necessary requirement to lead to compartmentalization of the medical record so that one portion of the record (the body of the report) may be readily disclosed for one purpose without compromising the privacy of the entire record."
By limiting PHI to headers, reports can easily be redacted of personal information; when the PHI is scattered throughout the reports, this information cannot be redacted.

Not to make light of pt privacy, but
I type on a 14 inch laptop screen that I must keep about 2 feet away from my face in order to see it. In the course of seeing my laptop, my less than petite frame obscures probably the middle 50% of the screen. On the screen, there are endless lines of text that would be rather meaningless to the average barrista/customer. The patient demographics are obtained via a link on the toolbar. A 'hotkey' is entered throughout the report where the patient name appears and in the preparing-to-send process, these are all replaced with the patient's name. The hospital I type for is 3000 miles away.
I can see where this might be problematic should someone with better vision than I manage to see around my hulking slumped body and see 25% of the text on the left and 25% of the text on the right and know enough about transcription to be able to fill in those rather large blanks on each line (and that doesn't even take into account that most laptops are made to be viewed head-on; side viewing, viewing from above, etc., distort the picture to make it all but illegible). I suppose this could still be problematic if this eagle-eyed contortionist with an intuitive knowledge of medical terminology and knowledge of random software programs to find that demographic button can psychically detect which hospital of the thousands in the country I am working on and happens to have a relative who lives in that very town ready, willing, and eager to spill the beans about Madame X's bunion. Yes, I can see where this is a danger. I guess I should thank my lucky stars that I have not run into either this fellow or chupicabra at my local coffee house.

As a recruiter, if I see someone who feels compelled....
...to tell me how fast they can type, their resume goes to the bottom of the stack. Then again, in another life I was a QA manager, and felt that quality was more important than how fast you could race through a report.
Everyone feels like that at some point. Personally, I just
pick myself up and keep going forward. I try not to let life get me down and I have faith in God that he will help pull me through whatever trying times bring.
That is pretty much all you can do.

How would you like to be a doctor? True, they make good money, but don't think they don't give blood for it. Patient's crawling down their backs, complaining, needing this and needing that, always on call, some patients can never be pleased, etc. There is no such thing as a perfect job.....

A vent! And boy, this feels GOOD!!
I've had it up to HERE with doctors who have thick foreign accents and dictate past the speed of sound, expecting that we are to know everything they're saying.
I've had it up to HERE with dictations received that were made on cassette tapes and then fished through onto digital recorders that contain tons of background noise and static, drowning out the dictation on them or making it sound like the doc is dictating from an underground tunnel.
I'm sending ALL these transcripts back as quickly as they're dictated - looking like swiss cheese, filled with holes and blanks - because it's NOT my fault I can't understand these docs. They don't seem to care and guess what? Neither do I! Garbage in - garbage out! Think they'll get the message?
Now, just let the OM call me about this - after sending her notes after notes on this subject, I'm ready to and WILL bite off her empty head!!

It does violate privacy or employment laws.
I've posted about it before because there were MTSOs trashing MTs by name on some of the boards. My mother is an HR director, so she's told me what companies legally can and can't divulge about employees or former employees. Companies are not allowed to prevent people from securing employment, or slander/libel them. Personal opinions cannot cloud the reference. They can only confirm or deny the accuracy of certain items, such as employment dates, etc. I think the most judgmental question they can answer is, "Would you rehire this person?" Yes or no.

Correct about breach of privacy and its NOT too late
As others have stressed on this board, both here and under the politics board, you have a voice and have the opportunity to make it heard. I personally have been e-mailing my US and state elected officials at least once a week. At the Women for Democrats website one of their goals is to bring American jobs back to America. http://democrats.senate.gov/checklistforchange/checklist.cfm The credit card processor for my bank, Heartland, recently had a huge breach in their security system. Per our local State Police this theft is way up due to 2 factors (1) Once our private information leaves the US, those entities are NOT governed by US law and there is little they can do about it; (2) the economy as more people are now willing to buy that information. He said the same goes for our medical information. If you do a search for "medical identify theft", there are over 70,000 hits on that, mind you I did it in quotes, so most likely more without it.
