A nice sunny room just for me in our finished lower level. Love my cocoon room.
:+
I have never had my own room. I shared a room with my sister, went away to college sm
and had a roommate (whom I am still close to) for 4 years, moved back home and back to sharing a room with my sister while she went to a local college and then got married. In fact, after 17 years of marriage, this is the first time in my life that I have had my own dresser, not just the top two or bottom two drawers!
I could never live alone. Not for fear but for loneliness. I like my alone time but I love to have people around.
are we all forgetting something?
We are in an economic crisis here!!! We should all be grateful to even have jobs!! My husband has had his work cut (not in the medical field) so severely it is pathetic, but he can't sue over it!! Either there is work or there isn't. Sometimes people promise work based off of previous statistics in their company, so you can't necessarily blame them for no work. You have to get another job to supplement or just ride it out. I know many people in my community that have been laid off from their jobs and had to take up any crappy minimum wage job they can find to make ends meet. Just another perspective from a financially stressed out person.
selective forgetting
Some people only remember that they want to remember.
You are forgetting one thing...
Most companies are not giving raises anymore, either. Sure they say they do, but in the end, just ask for one and see what happens.
I, for one, have never had a problem with getting a raise, but the companies are tightening their belts big time so they can compete with the overseas companies. All in all, the rates ARE an insult to an experienced Transcriptionist and I will not take a job at the lower rates "just to have a job".
The main problem with today's MTs is that they are willing to take these low paying jobs just to work. Then they complain because they're not getting paid enough. If MTs would all stick together and stop accepting jobs like this, companies would have to change their attitude and start paying us what we are worth.
When one company lowers their rates and gets MTs to work for them, another company decides to try the same thing. Next thing you know, all the companies are offering the lower rate....and the ball keeps rolling... Before you know it, we U.S. MT's will be making LESS than the overseas companies because of it.
I do wish everybody would wise up. The economics of the situation is supply and demand. We supply...they demand (more and more work for less and less money or benefits). Where will it end?
Forgetting to hang up - got me my job in college
I actually got my transcription job in college when the original Transcriptionist find out she was getting fired. The doctor didn't shut off the recorder and he and his partners started discussing putting an ad in the Sunday paper for her job. She quit - I walked in the next day (before the ad was ever placed) just going from office to office dropping off resumes and voila - MY LUCK ... well, not really. It was a horrible place to work and I ended up quitting after 3 months.
You're forgetting ALL the stuff you CAN buy because....
it's more cheaply made.. If you have to pay 10 dollars for a widget because we had to pay high union wages to an American worker, not that many people would be able to buy a widget. Lots of things are inexpensive because they are made offshore, and you are buying them and enjoying their low price every single day.
How about forgetting about other people and thinking
I started doing that years ago. We have the ability to just tune in our our headphones and tune out the garbage. Take attitudes for what they are. Here is something once I heard I always try to remember when someone in the field, either a coworker or boss, etc. is nasty: Always be kind as possible, everyone is also fighting some kind of battle.
This means we don't have to get in other people's heads and figure out why they are out to get us. Don't waste the time. Chances are whatever it is has nothing to do with us. If QA is instructional fine, take from the mistake and learn and consider that learning experience a blessing.
Conversely, besides the money which I also need to feed my family, think about that patient you are serving silently from home, and how you are in service. There is no job greater than to be in silent service to others. So, 2 things we can learn about our unique situation in this job: 1. Be thankful we can work quietly and remain quiet even through the storms of others. 2. Remain quiet while serving in a noble manner those who are at a time in their lives when they need you most, the sick and dying.
A lot of the way we are treated is drawn by the way we look at the world. Change your outlook and things will change. That of course is just my 2 cents. I am not in control of anyone else, not this business, not the other posters, not the docs, not the people in the industry alongside me. I can only sit quietly and appreciate the fact that I am an MT and that is where I should be and I enjoy that fact every single day, even for 26 years I have served thus far. Happy Thanksgiving.
Walking
Your probably right, I need to get out of this chair and go outside and walk.
just walking away
I am not gonna sit here and aruge with a batch of idiots about wanting to stay home and raise my kids, and maybe try to make some money while I do that.
ROTFLMAO - NO! I would not be seen walking my cat in this - but then again
I don't buy my dog Christmas presents either. Year-round rawhides, but no Christmas, Valentines, etc. So you would never see me walking a kitty in a stroller!
Walking 30 minutes per day sm
with the dogs (all 160 pounds worth!) has my back and the leg cramps have nearly disappeared as well as the lower leg edema. I can actually sit longer now and don't need so much in the way of pain meds and no heating pad for the leg cramps. And other benefits too, lost 5 pounds, concentrate better, sleep better, fresh air.
let ur fingers do the walking
No....but I transcribed asleep once. I was working 3rd shift and dozed off. I don't know how I managed to work the foot pedal and my C-phone and go through several reports. Luckily for me I woke up and realized what I had done. I scrambled to put my last several reports on hold to check them before the doctor received them who was one hallway over. It scared me so bad I wasn't sleepy for the rest of the night. I've never let myself sit there that sleepy anymore either. I get up and walk around to get myself more alert. Funny thing was I was not transcribing what the doctor was saying. I was using some of their phrases. I guess I would hear a word and it would trigger my memory and I would type a regular phrase. Scared the bejeebers outta me that is for sure!
Keep walking. Best thing for you!
Get a pedometer, pick up the pace and the distance after a bit and keep it up. I lost 20 lbs. walking and I felt so much better.
Don't get discouraged. It might take a few months, but keep it up and you'll be happy you did.
And drink lots of water too.
Good luck!!!
You act like all women are walking wombs..SM
just existing until we do the greatest of all things, BEAR A CHILD. No thanks lady. You have 'em. I don't need to have a child to validate myself in the world.
Just some daily walking would probably shake it for you, too. nm

I met him walking around downtown shopping..sm
basically on the "street corner" waiting for the light to change to walk across the street. He just started talking to me...and now we are hitched.
You sound VERY down, which is why kids are walking all over you..
If mine don't do what is expected of them, they don't get what is expected of me. All 3 of mine know that if their clothes don't find their way into the laundry room, I don't wash them. If they don't bring their clean folded clothes up from the laundry each day, I bring it up and deliver it via "air mail" which means I carry them up and toss them 3 feet into the air and let them rain down onto the floor of their rooms. If they don't care, neither do I. They can let their rooms be pig pens all week long, but then they will spent hours cleaning it up on the weekend including changing sheets and vacuuming the carpet, OR, they can keep it neat, put some clean sheets on once a week, and be on their way. You gotta be stronger and tougher than them, otherwise they're walking all over you.
And I always thought the idea of walking the dog was for exercise! - nm

Walking will not only improve your physical health
but probably your mental health too. You'll get fresh air, take time to smell the roses, meet your neighbors, etc.
Unfortunately I live in the county and we are 8+ miles from anything.
I would agree with the walking. And drink lots of
water.
I actually lost 20 lbs. after I started to work at home. No pastries, donuts, pies and candy in the break room anymore. :) And I've had time to walk and I drink water instead of tons of coffee with cream and sugar. Of course I still have my one cup in the morning so I won't yell at the kids. :)
Truth is, as an MT, I can't afford pastries or gourmet coffee. The water comes out of the faucet and the exercise membership, i.e. walking the dog around the neighborhood is free!
Worked for me. Give it a month. You'll not only lose the 10 lbs., you'll really feel great.
Oh, but I miss walking over the train tracks! sm
It's Christmas, my youngest is 21 and God how I miss stepping over the trains! He had to have a new one every year and I stepped over them all year long! Miss the kids when they were young! You guessed right, no grandkids yet and am patiently waiting.... I do have a granddog though and he comes over to play.....LOL
Watching CNN - New Orleans. See people walking through water (sm)
A thought comes to mind. I would be afraid to just walk around in the water. Isn't there a chance that either sharks or gators could have come inland with the water?

You're forgetting all the stuff you can't buy when you're UNEMPLOYED!
Unemployed people have a hard time buying anything, including cheaply made offshore products. How many will have to end up depending on public assistance? That means more tax dollars being eaten up - besides the taxes NOT being collected from the overseas workers. In the long run, are you really enjoying a lower price?
Lost the extra weight and have maintained a good weight and size just by walking him twice a day. n

NO, THERE IS NOT ENOUGH ROOM
in the insane asylums for all us newbies !!!!!!
Seriously,I do turn the speed up one notch from the middle for one or two excellent dictators, but any more than that, and most dictators would sound like chipmunks!!
I have room -- do you?
Looking at all of those thousands of displaced, hardworking, honest people and families you have to know that their homes and jobs are simply gone. They will need to start over elsewhere.
Can someone create an information bank of those of us willing to offer housing availablity (such as an extra bedroom) on a short-term basis. Sort of a temporary arrangement for the family to have shelter and food while looking for a new job/home etc?
Is there an agency for this?
I'm a room mom too...I always sm
order from Oriental Trading Company. Tons of inexpensive crafts for all ages. Sometimes the teacher will take up a 50 cent or 1 dollar donation from each child to cover the cost, but generally I just pay for it myself and write it off as a donation.
Get a room

I have my own room
used to be the third bedroom. Just recently budget decorated (yard sale finds, etc) it in a moderate retro look, black/gray computer, black accessories, peach wall and funky 1950s barkcloth curtains and bulletin boards (can't live without a place to tack up reminders, etc), black iron and oak bakers rack, painted a tall chest of drawers black to hold office supplies, black bookcase and two dark oak desks. Sounds kinda of dark with all the black, but it is realy quite light with the peach on the walls. Going for a more clean, streamlined look (Previously had country birdhouse decor). Even with my own office, I'm constantly fighting paperwork!! Ugh!
When I was room mom.....
I coordinated parties, helped out with field trips, that sort of thing. I had student names and their parents and telephone numbers so I could call around if I needed help with something (like a Christmas party). Also, to introduce yourself, send a note home with each child introducing yourself and letting them know if they have questions, they can call. I had parents call me just to find out my thoughts on different things going in the class. I loved being room mom. You get to know the kids. Also, let the teacher know that you are available to help her. Good luck!!
room mom
Oh boy, does that bring home memories! I was not a success....the first thing you do is take a Valium an hour before you go! Seriously though, talk to your co-mom, then the teacher, ask her about the dos and don'ts of parties, etc. I think the thing that got me the worst was the little chairs I had to sit on! Lot of trouble getting down on one, then getting up!
The little ones (I'm talking kindergarten) are excited to be there, they get noisy, and there are a lot of them! Also, there are always one or two that cry at first, one might go somewhere and cover up with a blanket and stay there the entire time, sucking his/her thumb! Of course, somebody always wets their pants or worse in the beginning. I thought I would lose my mind, but I kept smiling!
Best of luck! Remember, your offspring will be so happy and proud that you are there, so hold the banner high!
room mom sm
In addition to coordinating parties, etc., the room moms at my daughter's school usually have some kind of a get together so that all the moms can get to know each other. Also, it gives the room mom a chance to go over things that will be happening in the class.
Last year, we had a little "party" at the room mom's house with snacks, etc. That was a great way to get to know the other moms. The teacher usually meets with the room mom before the get together at the beginning of the school year.
The room mom also asks for volunteers for any party, field trip, etc. We always have plenty of volunteers which makes the room mom's job a lot easier!
Hope that helps!
Too bad she's not in the same room with you
so you could ask her if there was something you could help her with so you could both get back to knocking out the reports.
got room in that bag for me too??? --nm

Agree! There's room for everyone. :) nm

chat room
On the main board, menu on the left says "chat". I have clicked on it several times and it always says no one in the room.
there is enough room on this board for a little bit of everything.

In AOL chat room.
Chat room
Just wondering why there is so few in chat room. Whenever I go to chat, no one is there.
She is in our utility room, so she is out
of the rain. We have a chest freezer in there which puts out heat. We also have our hot water heater in there, which puts out heat and we also leave a light on for her, which generates some heat. She has room to lay down and stretch a little, just not as much room as a big dog really needs.
Have radios in every room -- all do it. nm

Always room for improvement
I do agree that they have areas where they need to improve but I promise you that they are working hard at making changes for the better for the good of the MTs out there. I'm sure I'm going to get slammed for coming to their defense (I can take it), but I just find it a bit hypocritical that so many people are so quick to bash them but yet don't hesitate to send folks to the organization when they need something such as the QA Document.
I probably shouldn't have jumped to conclusions (yes, I'm guilty), as I don't have any idea if those who posted above referring this person to AAMT are pro-AAMT or not. But, still want to say hooray for seing SOMETHING positive being posted on this board about AAMT. No, they are not perfect but they have achieved great things and greater things to come, I feel confident.
WAY better - now there's actually room on the stage...
for all the others!
Room mom anyone? I need some help/advice. sm
i have never been room mom but got elected somehow this year of being room mom. Where do i start and what do i actually do other than help coordinate parties? i got sent home a list today of all the students names that are in the class and my co-room mom's name. do i contact the teacher and say what do i do or what? Emergency Room
I type ER notes at my current job and I get the same thing. I bet 90% of my reports are for sore throats. I actually had one a few weeks ago for a cold! Come on now people! Everyone knows there is no cure for a cold! That is why most of us cannot afford health insurance. I had a couple bring a baby to the ER because it spit up during the night (just once). Come on! Babies do spit up. Natural. This happens. Buy a baby book!
