insult to injury

It is just the Pits! I would not want to work for them if I had any other choice at all. If no one works for them, they will have to change or do it all themselves! Yahoo.

And adding insult to injury,
I have a few that dictate like they're trying to keep it all a big secret; ironically, it usually sounds like they are trying to keep their voices down so they don't disturb the people having the LOUD conversation 5 feet away! Hello, get a clue! Gaaaah!
Adding insult to injury,
it's IC (independent contract) work with an insultingly low line rate. If I were going to take THAT big a pay hit, it had BETTER have one KICKER of a benefits package attached to it. No, thanks. Don't call me and I won't call you.

In addition to the various fees charged if you don't jump through all their hoops (and they were a bit fuzzy about whether those fees would still be assessed if the failure to complete the required work was THEIR fault not yours, there was also some verbiage in their contract that sounded like they might require you to use a dedicated computer--i.e. you can't use the computer you use for their work for anything else. Naturally, they do not supply this dedicated computer. Excuse me, if I own the computer, I can do whatever I bloody well please with it.
while recovering from an injury, (sm)
I purchased and used Dragon. Cost me about $1000 by the time I purchased the nice microphone and software. If you don't mind the time it takes to "program" your voice and other features, re-listen to each dictation and copiously edit, and put up with all the quirks of the voice recognition, it is so-so at very best. It did allow me to keep my job and work while injured, but I certainly would not purchase it again if I were healthy and didn't have a real need for the product, as it probably took me 11 hours to complete what I could in eight by transcribing the old-fashioned way ... um, the one with all the wonderful Expanders we have available ;)
Repetitve Stress Injury
Thanks so much for the help and advice.  Yes, I do have the screen eye level but I might be able to adjust a few things.  I think the doctor is my next stop however.  One thing I notice is maybe I need to get to stretching more between dictations.  I have a tendecy to focus on the work for too long.
My son also had a traumatic brain injury
Please let me know if you do find the answer to your question. My son, who lives with his father, has become a drug addict. He will not return to school or work; he is only interested in getting his SSI check and whatever else he can get from the government and everybody else. Please let me know if you have any answers. I do know that I went to college with a learning disability (ADHD), and I not only asked the professors to put me in the front and center seat but also had free tutoring for math classes when I needed it (I kept losing my glasses). They offer free tutoring through Student Services for a variety of handicaps. Good luck!
R hand and R rotator cuff injury..but I did it

Well, I broke my right hand years back, around 1986, and still went to work, without a cast, cause I had to work..Would work till it hurt too much and made me nauseous, then would go to the ladies room, get cold water on a towel, put it on my hand and go back to work.

In 2003, I tore my R rotator cuff.  Opted for no surgery as I do not have insurance..Had to still work, Im the only *bread winner*..Put my R arm in a sling..took lots of ibuprofen, rubbed my shoulder with Ben Gay..Sometimes had to pick up my R arm and place it on the keyboard cause my arm couldnt do it..When I got on the keyboard, I was find..it was just lifting to my keyboard..It was hell..but what could I do..I will not rely on a govt program, never have, and I had to make a salary, have no family to depend on, would never ask my friends..So I did it myself..R shoulder still hurts sometimes, especially when I sleep..but I was able to get through it and you will too..

Repetitive Stress Injury Neck
I am in bad shape with my neck and I thought maybe I could come here for some advice before I go to my doctor. I have an injury there already, but I thought it healed.  I do 8 to 10 hours a day of typing and computer work.  I do sit in an ergonomic chair, but I have very bad neck pain still...primarily on the left and it is a sharp intermittent pain.
Repetivie stress injury neck
I had fusion at C6-7 15 years ago, with release of nerve entrapment. Now I also am getting the same pain back in my neck and arms from transcription. I have been on muscle relaxants and pain killers. My desk is ergonomically correct as is my chair, level of screen. My screen is eye level. I may need another MRI, as it is now affecting my neck/shoulder. I am going to try a back cushion to see if that will help me. There are several stores that sell these and they are not too expensive. I know the pain, it is horrible and I feel for you. I would just try to see what your doctor can offer you. Cortisone injections do work as does physical therapy. Good luck and I hope your pain is gone soon.
Last year I got repetitive stress injury..sm

have been working on and off as an MT for 20 some years. One year I worked radiology and I can remember actually putting out 200 reports one day. I never got carpal tunnel with the keyboard but could get it with the mouse. About two years ago, I had a busy stint where I was probably working 6-7 straight hours, then my fingers began to hurt. First it was the thumbs, then it was all my fingers. Just ached. Not arthritis, because joints were not red or swollen. I even bought a parafin bath, tried NSAIDs. Finally investigated on the internet to find out I had repetitive stress injury. I stopped typing (fortunately I own a small MTSO) and just let my fingers rest. To this day, two years later, of almost NO typing, all it takes is about 3 hours straight typing and it's back. I've decided I've hurt my fingers irreparably and any further damage I do now, I will just pay for later with arthritis or something. Sorry to hear about your disability.

Son suffering from traumatic brain injury.

My son was hit by a car 7 years ago and sustained a traumatic brain injury. He was in a coma and went through over a year of rehabilitation. He was 15 at the time and finished high school, went on to Junior College and has just finished a year at a state university. He has struggled with learning disabilities and short term memory problems since the accident and has barely passed his classes. It looks as though this was his last semester at school because his grade point average isn't high enough to let him continue school. He will be put on academic suspension. He wanted to go away to school so badly and worked so hard to make it and I know he will be so disapointed when he finds out he won't be going back in the fall.

He is definately a miracle and I thank God everyday that he is alive but I don't know what to do to help him anymore. My question is "Is there anyone out there with a similar situation who can give me some advice on where to go from here?"

No Insult taken

You guys really have my sympathy.  What a mess.  Best wishes to you all.  Go get 'em!!

How is this an insult?

Yes - insult us all! Go for it!

Although your posts are getting more amusing (and more full of typos) all the time, I'm still rather shocked at your opinion of MTs!

Keeping it realistic?  How's this for realistic - its is obvious that you are both sick with jealousy at anyone with a decent line count AND ashamed of the work you do!  You have referred to it as slave labor, manual labor, working like a horse, and rant on and on about how its going down the drain, blame the doctors, blame technology, blame anyone with a "stupid" idea, blame everything and everybody.  Take a look in the mirror the next time you blame!  Good grief, woman, if you hate this work so much go do something else for a living!

Those of us who enjoy our work and find it profitable really wonder what you think you're accomplishing with all this negativity!  You sneer about expanders, you are outraged at the thought of sitting still and working a whole 55 minutes - well that actually works for MANY of us!  I take pride in my work and my swelled head matches my swelled paycheck!  All the insults in the world from the likes of you can't take it away one bit of my pride, my work ethic, or my whopping line count!  So go ahead and "stay down to earth"....your attitude isn't dragging down anybody but YOU!

Truly an insult
You really have no right to interfere.  Do you have a psychiatric degree?  If so, where is it?  You are just a Transcriptionist and have no right to judge a doctors patient or anybody for that matter.  You certainly do not get the big doctor bucks, do you?   You are no more than a common person on the street calling someone "sick", when you really do not know the facts.  What if she was indeed okay and you interfered in her care.
insult to women

Some women ask for it??  What an insult to all women.  What never blame the guy??  This young woman was acting like a young woman and partying and meeting guys.  In no way, shape or form was her demise/disappearance her fault or her parents fault.  get real.

The insult was probably not directed at you then.

You are a "mobile home dweller", not "trailer trash" or a skank.  There's a big difference, one you can tell by looking at the home and the person.  We have some very nice mobile homes on our block nestled amongst the stickbuilt houses.  There used to be four "trailer trash" houses.  One of them remodeled and it looks quite nice.  Another one moved out, someone bought the lot, sold the trailer, tore up the old foundation, and now they have a really nice big yard.  We're still trying to get rid of the other two.  If they'd only clean up the junk littering their yards, mow and water once a week, and paint the exteriors, they'd have nice properties.  I don't understand why able-bodied people would not maintain their properties to keep or increase the value.  Instead, their dumps make the entire neighborhood look trashy.  Ironically, there are city laws here that they must mow and they must clean up their junk and abandoned cars.  These are the people screaming drunk in the streets at 2:00 a.m.  Other people have turned them in to the police repeatedly.   Thus, true trailer trash.  If I had only known 10 years ago what I know now, we never would have bought this place.

I can somewhat relate to your taking offense.  It's the same thing with the dumb blonde jokes.  However, I just tell myself that I'm not dumb or dyed, so the remark isn't directed at me.  You aren't a trailer trash skank, so the remarks weren't directed at you.  You are a very nice, intelligent mobile home dweller.

career insult
Thank you! I have an aunt with the same name . . . Louise. She is my favorite aunt and always in my corner. I just had to say that. I hope your daughter is able to cope better these days. Cerebral palsy is not an easy thing to deal with. And you! To do this type of work and care for another with CP --You deserve a huge pat on the back, hug and so much more. Thank you for your support. I have gotten so much from this board. Bless you!
Not to insult you, but also make
in the trash.  I always put a note when returning to the doc that the tape is defective.  Another thing though - from the old school and working with tapes so much, is that it could be the actual dictation machine the doc is using.  You may want to have that checked out as well or he/she may need a new one.  All equipment wears out eventually.  I have had this happen.
TOTALLY! (It's an insult!) nm
.
Oh no, certainly not insult. Like the line and

not ALL. You doi not know me well enough to insult my integrity
like that.

Ever experience pride in an honest day's pay or a job well done? Fairness? Respect? and don't look at others - these are things you give yourself.

It's called ETHICS...got some?
you sure went a long way to insult someone's opinion

Hey this lady didn't ask you to insult sm
her. She asked if anybody had anything that would help her. Obviously she does not agree with what her niece has done, but the crack you made was totally uncalled for. Why can't you have a little compassion for this lady. She just wants some friendly advice, not nastiness. Have a heart will ya?
Family insult about my career
I need to vent.  Hope that is okay.  You know we take a lot of abuse from bad dictators, the impossible to please QA, but from family is just too much.  I called home to my parents -- big mistake.  I was feeling great this week.  I have one MT job that I hate and another temp job -- may be will go full-time that I absolutely love.  My father asked why I don't get a job!  I challenge anyone in my family to try and do what I do!  I finished school in 6 months!  Had a job before I even finished the course.  I have worked my buttock off for the last 2+ years!  Yes things are slow now and money is tight.  I hate my one account.  But heck!  Get a job??? I work three jobs, plus take care of two kids and a disabled spouse.  Did I deserve this?  I cannot work outside the home because I think my family is priority.  That is one of the reasons I worked so hard to do what I do.  There are days I would love to throw in the towel, but I stay in the game because I don't have any other options right now.  There are up sides.  I don't spend money for gas.  I don't have to drive in bad weather.  And I am here for those who need me.  So am I such a horrible person?  I spend the last two hours crying.  I feel like I just got kicked in the gut by a horse.
Family insult about my career
Hi, I know what that feels like so don't feel alone. My daughter (who is now 20 and able to cope better) has cerebral palsy and I opted for this same career for the same reasons (to be near at hand and have grown to love this work) and my late mother always referred to it as "Louise's tin-pot job"!!! Hang in there and write me if you would like to. There is nothing worse than someone denigrating our work. With best wishes: Lou
It's a seafaring insult, though both are similar
guess I'm not so far under the rock after all. Just Google the term... you'll find it.
Ohhh, ty. So it WASN'T an insult {;-)
I've seen the movie, didn't retain that part (obviously). Maybe I should start sniffing glue; it might help!
For every US MT insult, there is a position offshored to India
...think about it.

You are so hateful to MTSOs, you drive them to offshore.

When I deal with rude US folks, it reinforces the fact that I don't want to work with those people.

Thanks for the reinforcement! :)
Might be public forum but you don't need to insult people
in "just kidding" or not. Now drop the subject. I accepted your apology, now move on. I will not argue the point with you. It is fruitless.
slinging insults? "grow up" is an insult and antagonzing

Another one from back when it wasn't an insult to be called Secretary

I actually went to a secretarial program at the local technical school.  AND I learned Gregg shorthand, but haven't thought about that in a number of years.  Boy are you all bringing back memories.

Now everyone is an administrative assistant.  Secretary is much easier to say.

Good luck! I just got $0.0010 which means and extra $1 for every 1000 lines - Whoo hoo! Very insult
