unpronounceable name, like Thyvongngang Tamboyvonangouwengay - and then say "common spelling" like it was John Smith. Cracked us both up every time.

Impossible to give answer as it all depends
on voice recognition program, dictator, etc. I am working in such a lousy program lucky to get in 800 lines a day - it's the software - I spend so much time deleting what is there it is not even funny. I could type from scratch much faster.
Would you give a dictator "neuts" if he dictated it?
How about polys, lymphs, ect. Do you give them what they say or are these considered slang and spelled out?
I do give her credit for that - she came a long way. (sm)
I know she does a lot of good for a lot of people. I just think somewhere along the line she lost touch with "real" people. I guess that's bound to happen, though. I don't have a problem with the school in Africa, she can do what she wants with her "own" money. I do think, though that a lot of times she takes credit for things she didn't really do. Maybe that goes with the territory too, or maybe people really don't care.
How long do you give a new job before you quit?
Just started a new job two weeks ago and have a gut feeling it is not going to work out. The transcription itself is okay, it's everything else -- time consuming ADT, recordkeeping, etc.
What's the quickest you have ever quit a job or how long do you give a new job before saying Adios?
This job is a second job because I need extra money. So I can quit and still have my primary income.
How long before they give you the boot?
When starting out entry level at a company, what is the norm for probationary period? I worked partime as an IC MT for a year for a friend, did inhouse TX for 7+yrs for specialty MD's office. All this and never had a problem.
Now that I am doing IC work with a national, it seems that everything I thought I knew about grammar and terminology couldn't hold a candle to the expectations of the nat'l companies. Now I am begining to get self conscious about every little thing to the point where it takes me a rediculous amount of time to get it done.
It's not like I'm making huge mistakes or anything. For the most part I do have my terminology and grammar down......its just the little things. For example, I never knew that there was a difference in the way the phrase 'follow up' should be written-as two words, hyphenated or as one single word. Didn't know that it depends on if it is used as a noun, adjetive, verb, etc.
I like the company I work for, but man do I feel inadequate.
Agree it's the dictator's report and the dictator's call. NM

How long do you give a new job before you decide it's not a good fit for you? sm
(Also posted on Company Board)
My saga follows. Please go to the bottom of post for my question :)
I've been with my current company as a PT emp. for 2 1/2 months. Everything about them seems to be quite fair, not great, but very fair. I'm still on hourly pay of a whopping $8.50 till I get my production up. Therein lies the problem, I cannot EVER see getting my line count up with the inordinately excessive number of ESLs on my acct. It's just ridiculous. All I'm asking is to actually TRANSCRIBE for a living, instead of rewinding and relistening 1000 freakin' times a day.
I've never gotten the feeling that I'm being taken advantage of or given the crap work, I just believe I'm on a very high percentage ESL account. I don't mind doing ESLs, I really don't. I just want more understandable drs thrown into the mix.
This is my first job after graduating and I was lucky enough to be hired for acute care. I'd like to continue in acute care. I just want to be able to PRODUCE, improve and ENJOY my job. I want to be doing MT work for many years to come.
I'd just like some opinions from those of you with more experience about what you might do in my situation.
Also, how long do you give a job before you decide it's not a good fit for you? Am I giving up too quickly?
It's nearly impossible to get by even on
This biz stinks more every single day.
Not impossible more improbable.
I didn't say it was impossible. Just not the norm and harder to prove. As in this case.
they are already impossible to reach
18,000 lines and your rate increases by half cent, whoopee. MQ is a complete joke, a bunch of greedy, phony liars. This whole business is in the toilet and i'm just sorry I didn't start school for a dif career sooner to be out of it NOW. I'm gradually having to cut down on spending because my rate of pay is not up with the times, severe hand pain day after day, condescending technicians and supervisors. I feel trapped.
hahahaha - yup, it's impossible!!!!
x
Appreciate your thoughts, but all of this is impossible.
For so many reasons. As one poster stated, these boards only reach about 10% of the MTs (very small number). I, among others, have written numerous letters. Heck, I even wrote to Obama, my congressman, major news papers, news programs, news magazines, etc. It does not do any good. I filed a complaint with the Employment Comission and Labor Board on the working requirements and procedures (that got me laid off).
Another very important thing to consider here is that not all MTs are unhappy. I was for a very long time, but I am quite happy with my working conditions and pay at this time (even though I do not expect it to last due to the industry evolvement). There are also more MTs than not who can not afford to do what you say is a good idea (strike or whatever). Some will lose their jobs as I did and even if they did not, they simply cannot afford to go without pay for any length of time. How effective would all of this be if only a couple of people from different companies did this? We all work for different companies, and again, they are not ALL bad, even though there are not many of those left. There is also the consquence of them replacing us with near-newbies at even lower wages, increasing the company profits, and further damaging the industry.
Our only hope was the AHDI and they stabbed us in the back. More offshoring is being done to cover the tax/cost implications currently in motion, again further damaging the industry. I just have to believe that it will evolve to its worst, and then swing back our way. Wishful thinking, I know but that's all I've got.
1000 lines a day, impossible? sm
this is not unrealistic. On a good day, I can easily do 16-1700 lines! A mere 1000 lines per day is NOT an unachievable goal, even for a newbie or semi-newbie. My company requires 1200 lines a day, which I believe is about average!
I too felt like it was an impossible career
Now 8 years later, I'm glad I stuck with it. Before working at home, I worked for two years at a local hospital and that really helped me build my work experience and really helped when I went out on my own. By working at the hospital, I became familiar with the local docs and eventually got my own accounts with them. I had to let those accounts go because I moved, and now I am working for a small MTSO for the timebeing. I had no problem getting this job. I had applied to many different places and was overwhelmed with job offers. If you stick with it, it gets easier. You've invested time and money into this, have patience and see it through.
I have an idea. Let the MTSO do impossible
his business. Instead of expecting me to do him for 1/2 of what he is paying, let her do him.
Then it's impossible to comment on the QA's note. sm
There are, of course, situations where it's pretty obvious that an individual guessed at a term rather than either looking it up or leaving a blank.
For instance, when the MT uses a term that has no logical relationship to the subject being discussed, that's a pretty good clue that she did not look up the definition of the word.
I'm not saying that's what happened in your case; I don't know enough to say. What I would suggest is that you decide on one of two courses of action:
a. Let it ride. It's doubtful that the QA intended to insult you, although "please check the definition of terms that you're not sure of" might have been more diplomatic (or would you have liked that any better?).
b. Talk it over with the QA calmly. Let her know that you thought her comment was offensive and presumed something that wasn't true.
Either way, I'm sure you're already aware that it's always better to leave a blank than to use the wrong term - whether by "mistake" or by "guessing". I know that all of us take great pride in completing our work accurately and it just kills us to have to leave blanks (a wonderful attitude, by the way!), but sometimes its just unavoidable - and if you've done your reasonable best to resolve a blank without success you've done your job. Leave the blank and get a second set of ears on it. After all, the doc might have used a term that doesn't even belong there in the first place.
I hope you're able to resolve this conflict with your QA or get past it. I know how these things take approximately 63.795% out of the joy of your work! :D
LOL! Know just how you feel. They are near impossible to grow in SoFla.
aa
Yes its true. They seem to be setting impossible limits for everyone lately and you have to wonder
if they just want people to quit.
The best place to get experience is in a hospital. I think it is near impossible
to work from home without the valuable experience of working onsite with others around to listen and train.
The schools all hype everyone up on working at home, but it is not that easy!
One thing I've learned in life is it's impossible to
stand up for themselves. Maybe only 1 in 100 will even try. Sad to say, but we've brought a lot of this onto ourselves.
Thank you for response. :( I figured it was nearly impossible for transcribed lines.
I think my co. wants me to quit...
I find infectious disease to be IMPOSSIBLE, with all the bacterias AND the meds.

I wanted to learn it, but I fear the learning curve would be impossible. sm
since I can't take any time off from the qwerty keyboard. How did you make the conversion?
At 53 working 2 jobs 80 hours a week is impossible. I tried it, it does not work!! (sm)
I have been at this business 30+ years and at one point worked 3 jobs and 2 were for hospital contracts with taxes taken out and the other IC. It gives you no life. My suggestion, if you need the extra $$ work your 40 during the week, then 1 or 2 nights 2 hours and then Sat/Sun 16 hours which would give you 20 hours. That is more than enough and will give you a chance to see if you want to make a job change. Have tried the 2 FT 80 hours and almost had a seizure over it. Remember if your not physically well you cannot do it all!
You must live in Calif - finding a good old doctor is nearly impossible here.
It amazes me. But, it is true. The stories I have heard are heartbreaking.
I blame it on the cap they placed on malpractice suits. Doctors here are complacent. In my town, we go to Stanford or UCLA for serious illnesses. It is well worth the drive.
Explain you took on 2 acct at same time but find it impossible to do adequate job for 2 accts.
:P
The girl was 13, the rapist a distant relative they took in. Give money, give food and your time, b
you don't put your family at risk by taking in strangers. That's just plain foolish. There were over 3300 registered sex offenders in NO. Where are they now. In your community? Perhaps in your house? Good luck.
oh our lovely government does give illegals medicaid, foodstamps, and housing so in term we give tha
i have been through some rough times lately and had to apply for some help. there are signs, big signs, all over our offices saying "YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE LEGAL TO GET HELP". so we and our government do give them our benefits whether they are legal here or not. now that is messed up. i am helping to support them so they can take away my jobs and i can't even support my kids and yes i get benefits, wow $75 a month in food stamps which lasts not even a week in a household of 6. don't get me wrong, i am thankful for any help at the moment, but i get penalized for trying to work my tail off and still can't survive.
there was recently an article in our local newspaper where one of our local school districts tried to charge $1000 a year for each illegal student enrolled. it was bulked and the illegals got a lawyer to sue for discrimination. the school district merely stated that they had to HIRE extra teachers that could speak the foreign language just to teach these children and were trying to offset some of the expenses. ridicilous!! so again our taxpayers money is paying to educate illegals as well.
Aw come one give her a break. She said she was sorry and is willing to refund. Give her a chance to
do what is right. If she fails to do what is right, then go about this in an adult way and not act like such a child. "you suck" That is so immature.
She is responding to you and you are eating her alive. Why would she put herself out there to be treated like this if she didnt mean it.
I am really astonished at how people can act on here. Would you treat people like this in person? If you do, I cant imagine you having very many friends.
Remember we are all "HUMAN."
I did bad, bad, bad!! Need a dictator! Lol nm
:)
I have one dictator who does that...sm
He's from either Britain or South Africa and he always clearly says *the patient is alert and orientated* and I give him *orientated*! It is a verbatim account! He speaks the true King's English, so if he says *orientated* (and he does ALL the time say that word) it's what I'm giving him. *lol*
And this is the dictator you get from the
that is MT friendly! Yeah right! I'll apply to the company that states "dictators are MT friendly! Been there done that, but I got a chuckle from your post! Thanks for sharing!
ESL dictator
LOL!, LOL!. LOL!!!!!!
Dictator......
Okay, I spoke with a girlfriend in south Texas who said they are seeing many ESL dictators refusing to speak English to dictate, demanding a bilingual Transcriptionist be found. There is a HUGE number of illegals in the areas and she says he gets their business and doesn't care...he is one that is outspoken out no border control and letting all illegals come and go as they please, so that speaks volumes there. Don't know about this guy though, but in a country where there is civility among its peoples, yes, you do need to speak one language to one another and in this country, that is English. If he wants to speak only Spanish, then let him go south of the border and he can dictate in Spanish all he wants.
Ask dictator
I ask the dictator and so far I have always been told they expect me to fix the report, that is not their specialty. It is harder to determine if you can't speak directly to the dictator though. I would never change it unless I had the dictators permission.
I have a new non-M.D. dictator, ESL who always
gives the diagnosis of high blood pressure as hypertensions, has to have that S on the end.
I hate Instant Text. It is expensive, long long learning
curve, and too much distraction for me.
annoying dictator
Here's a good one; 7-1/2 minute dictation, first minute put on hold, then dictator dictates for two minutes, then says, Never Mind, Lets start this ALL OVER. And they wonder why we are tense
Annoying dictator
If you are being paid by the line, I sure would dispute this! They have no idea, do they?
no you aren't...he's a bad dictator
nm
If your dictator says DCD for discontinued
i want to put discontinued what would you put
Yup - 3 to 4K, depending on the day and the dictator. NM.....
dictator type
This may be unusual, but I have more problems with southern accents than with Asians! African-American and New Orleans patois also confound me. I find British and Australian accents delightful.
I really appreciated my dictator just now.
At the end he said, "This is <his name> bumbling through this again. Thank you so very much."
Guess it makes me at least feel a little appreciated.
Dictator said DOB 1926, but then said...
59-year-old male - Should I correct this? TIA!
My present dictator
She underwent the above procedures without difficulty. period. ummm period. She ummm period. She ummm
I think its time for a break already
Depends on the dictator....
Sometimes it is faster to type every word continuously, unless there's a difficult dictator, then you have no choice but to listen, stop, type, backup, listen again, backup, listen again....ya know?
Almost always the first except if a difficult dictator. (sm)
Then I am constantly listening again to make sure I have it correct.
Mean-spirited dictator... (sm)
This is probably something that shouldn't bug me, but for some reason, it really has for a few days now...
I work for one of the big nationals and had one of the dictators make a pretty nasty comment at the end of one of his notes. It was nothing profane or even specific--just a really sarcastic comment about what a "great" job we do. In fact, what made the comment bad was his tone, not even the words that were said.
I know that his comment wasn't directed personally at me, and that the anonymity that we feel working from home works the same way on their end, as well and makes it easy to be rude. However, this has really stuck with me and kind of depressed me for the last few days. Anyone else have something like this happen to them? I'm trying to just have a thick skin, but it's still bothering me.
Is a good dictator now? I bet he is. He knows what you go through. nm
x
because when the dictator's provide the
proper demographics and enunciate clearly, I LOVE this work. I do not do it for the $ or for the bennies. I am 60 years old and don't need either. I just love transcription work. I doubt, though, that you can understand this.
