Good for you, Carol! If you are business-minded, go for it.....sm
I have had 3 friends who have done the very same -- I even worked for one of them for 2 years while the company got off the ground. If you can marked yourself/your service, be shrewd and confident, and have the time and energy/focus for bartering contracts, etc., you can really make great money on your own. I have not attempted it yet because of raising kids, and now have my elderly mom who just was widowed. And if you feel you need some business help, my friends all got mentoring through the Small Business Administration, they have former business owners who will actually come to your house, plan strategy, give you tax tips, and so much more. It can be so frustrating working for other companies in this business, all the best!
Please keep the puppy away from that little girl. I don't like the sound of it. Good for you sm
with the camera. Keep that video for a long time! People's memories have a way of fading.
Shelties are the sweetest, gentlest dogs, but their instinct is to nip feet in an attempt to herd. Have fun with your new sweetie!
Good luck, but if it was me, I'd keep the puppy away from the little girl sm

Way to go carol!
:-)
Thanks, Carol.
It's a little crazy everywhere, I suppose. I don't think anyone would win if this were brought to anyone's attention, in our business.
Yes, it felt good expressing it. Not everyone understands our business and how important it is to meet TAT and I guess this shows how far someone will go.
I am probably not the better person but if I thought this was happening to a coworker, I would probably step up to the plate and ask the games to stop.
HA - GOOD ONE - AND SO TRUE
I tell them that if it seems to be good to be true, it is.
I usually invite them to come to my house where I have a few sample recordings. I let them sit down and give it a try. We pretend they are earning .09/line and I let them go at it. Most don't make it through 30 minutes of an easy sample recording. And when we calculate that they've barely earned a dollar or two, they get the picture.
To good to be true
If it sounds to good to be true, it no doubt is. It could be due to the fact that many QA people get sick of QA and most don't get paid as good as MTs generally. It's a pretty dull job and I am sure you'll have to wear some pretty heavy duty armor. Your the cop on the beat so to speak.
Awesome Carol! That's a cute mousepad, too.

Carol, the short answer is very difficult. SM
It took me surprisingly much longer to become a modestly competent MT than it did to become a competent real estate appraiser. If I had had any idea, I never would have accepted my MT friend's offer to help me fill in a real estate recession period with transcription. It's so easy working from home, not dressing and making up, not commuting, not having any work-related stress (if you don't count lack of income in this category), and not stroking and negotiating with clients, though, that I let myself be seduced into working for close to minimum wage for several on-job-training production-pay months, and then for a disgracefully (i.e., looking back, appalling that I settled for it) low wage for another couple of years before I finally became knowlegeable enough to make a decent middle-class income that compared to what I had been making. I did always definitely plan to go back to back to full-time appraising, but eventually realized that if I stopped transcribing I'd lose the skill I'd invested so much to develop but that I could keep my appraiser's license current with minimal effort and expense. So here I am.
In any case, given that, and the uncertainties involved in the future of this work (it does seem that, at very least, relatively fewer but higher-skilled people would be needed), if I were you I'd take that class and a full course of others that prepared me for something else--perhaps tumor registrar? And with the medical knowledge you developed, later on you could segue into this work should it still be there and you wished.
To underline, although experienced people do make good money at this, for newcomers it's definitely not an easy, quick, or secure way to enough income to pay the rent. Best wishes.
saw it on monster-- "a too good to be true" job description-
for info and see what kind of a response I get. Don't want to send my resume unless it seems legit. I have 2 jobs now, just fishing for something better.
not true, I make good $$$ and manage to come

If you pick a good school, not always true..sm
The 2-year minimum experience is often waived if you graduated from the right school. I would not choose any school in this day other than the AAMT-approved schools. Many local community college courses are adequate, but you need to ask up front if they help w/ job placement. The big bonus from choosing an AAMT-approved school is name recognition - this is VERY important, because if a company recognizes the school you graduated from and knows it produces quality graduates, you will be hired based on the school's reputation, and that's why many companies will waive experience requirements for those schools.
MTSOs know which schools turn out graduates that are ready to hit the ground running and which ones don't, so they will often pass up a graduate from the lesser schools, especially if they also have grads from the AAMT-approved schools applying at the same time. Since majority of MT jobs are now paid on production, education is becoming much more vital than it was 10-15 yrs ago when many MTs were trained on the job and paid hourly.
You said a mouthful! All so very true! Good post!
NM
You go girl! You go girl! Loved your response!

True! Computer techs are all foreign. Used to be a good-
still have a tech job are usuallyh IC's, with no job security and no benefits. Lots of computer and microchip manufacturing jobs, that spawned the 'Silicon Valley' in California have gone offshore. Now even radiologists have to worry about their jobs, as some places send the x-rays digitally to Philippines to be read.
What I'd like to know is.... What exactly is going to be LEFT in the United States for US to do? Gas station attendant? Nope... most are self-serve, unless you live in Oregon. Wal-Mart Greeter? Hmm... not old enough (or retired enough) for that. Farm worker? Nope. Mexicans have cornered that market. Waitress? Nope. Lots of eat-in restaurants going belly-up these days. Typesetter? Nope. Newspapers are going extinct. Web designer? Nope. Most people can design their own nowadays. Retail? Same as the restaurants. Teacher? Whoa - talk about an underpaid profession! Nurse? Another underpaid one. Not a good choice for us work-at-home recluses. Truck driver? One of the few jobs where they need people, but to make ends meet these days you have to pretty much live in your truck. Flight attendant? Not a good choice for us recluses who hate to fly. Rap artist? Pretty saturated field. Hair stylist? I don't even comb my OWN hair most of the time, and haven't cut it in years. So I'd be pretty useless unless someone with long hair wanted a French braid. Chef or short-order cook? Not if you only cook TV dinners. (Does that count as cooking?) Dog-walker? Nah - I'm a cat-person. Bike-messenger? In my town, most of em don't live very long. You never see middle-aged bike messengers. Taxi-driver? Nope - the Sikhs have cornered that market. Executive secretary? (What? Go back to wearing heels and pantyhose? NEVER!)
Crazy question... does Express Scribe actually convert audio to text? Sounds too good to be true..
It does state this on their web site. I was curious if anyone has used this option, and if so, does it really work?
Thanks again~
Thank you ghost! So true! So true! More than one person!

true, true - but what you see as arrogance...sm
I think a lot of people go the extreme -
so, if I had to be one way or the other (being a humble extremist myself...*LOL*), I'd rather have too much self-esteem than not enough (been there, done that the first 30 years!!! *L*). And I am a truly humble person, been recognized for just that.....but because of *been there, done that* - and all sorts of therapies (not drug therapies), some end up the other way. Oh well, this was a fun couple of posts - so I thought.
Gave me much to chew on :) Have fun!
ROFLMAO!!!! so true! so true!
Everybody sees it but her, though! I love it! Thanks for the giggle! ":^)
YOU GO GIRL!!! SM
GURL - YOU SAID IT ALL!!! STANDING OVATION TO YOU!!!
I just went on a rampage about these "wonderful moms" badgering a single mom about putting her kid in daycare so she could work... WHO CARES?!?!? Why do they think their aggressive is worth so much -
I agree - UNITE... CARE... REASSURE... We are all familiar with at lease one aspect of every ONE of our lives... BE CONSIDERATE FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE... Just because someone doesn't live their life like YOU do does NOT mean they are doing it WRONG.... Doesn't the BIBLE say to LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR.... we are ALL neighbors here, and I would lend a helping hand to anyone who asked it of me...
GEEZ - if you need a hormone adjustment, PLEASE get HELP... if it is the HEAT, GET IN A POOL!!! There are some of THE most nasty replies on this board for NO REAL REASON except for those whose lives are miserable, so they wish to pass it on and create TURMOIL!!! Just STOP!!! Realize it is OKAY to be different, and to live different lives... and if someone comes to this board for empathy, those who wish to give it - please give it... those who have NO empathy... SHUT UP!!!
You go girl!!
I totally agree with you!!! In my town, a LOT of the trailers are so much nicer than any of the homes. When my husband and I first got married, we lived in a crappy apartment. I would have so much rather lived in a nice trailer where I felt safe. However, we live in Missouri, where it is tornado heaven in the springtime and I am a huge freak when it comes to tornados.
You shouldn't call someone a skank just because of where they live. I would bet that some of the women living in the $300,000 houses are cheating wifes who actually deserve the word skank.
Keep up wtih good work, you should be proud of your family!!!
You go girl! sm
It was almost a year ago that I sat my family down and told them that I wanted to come home. I had picked up a "side" account while working a full time job. I did the "side" account for 6 months and then gave my notice to the hospital I was working at as I found enough work to do at home.
It is the best thing I ever did and I actually make more money than I did in house because I'm happy and motivated. I don't have to deal with the office witch, a run in my nylons, forgetting my lunch or having to drive the 45 miles round trip every morning. I can stop what I'm doing and spend time with my kids or my grandbabies and I can get by on 5 gallons of gasoline a week at the very most.
Good luck!
You go girl!

That's my girl..lol

Little MT, all the best to you and you go girl! SM
This business has gone to the dogs and I APPLAUD you for getting out. Let us know how it goes. Congratulations!

You go girl...
We're proud of you. I've been there, done that, exactly, a few years back. This is one thing I leanred -- once things start going badly for him, and they will, he will shift his focus back to you -- everything going wrong for him will be YOUR fault. If only you hadn't done this or that.... yada yada. That way he doesn't have to take any responsiblity. Please don't fall into this trap of even listening to it !! Listening to it only feeds into him being more convinced of it ! Just remember you were smart enough to get rid of him, so go live the life you were meant to have! If you don't do it for yourself, nobody else will do it for you ! Congrats.
You Go Girl!!!!
Everyone needs a night out and if he doesn't like it too bad.
I am right behind you, girl! My
up and running in about 30 more days and I can't WAIT! Way more money, more free time! YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
YOU GO GIRL
I had something very similar happen to me! The doctor dwindeled down my work to nothing and basically forced me to quit. What they did was give the work to a girl in the office who they did not have to pay a contract rate to and get off cheapter! I was infuriated!!! So I say, YOU GO GIRL...
to CI GIrl
Honey, you really are clueless. The Indian MTs are the upper class - they are not poor. They have college degrees, some of them have Medical degrees (takes 2 years over there, I think, but I could be wrong), and they have nannies for their children, get tea time paid for by the MT companies that employ them. Those employers also provide their transportation to and from work everyday. Does any U.S. employer do that?
40 years this might have been the land of opportunity, but not anymore. Illegals are swarming in here everyday - they are stealing our identities and making a mockey of our entire system of laws. Not to mention how they are clogging our schools, our health care system and our prisons.
We are under attack.
You said it..girl!...
Same for me, live in rural midwest. My last office job, I topped out at $11.30/hr with 20 years experience... Wow $$$, so by the time you counted in the car payment, gas, time commuting, the fact that I never would see my husband because he works odd shifts "on call" type schedule, etc. It just was not worth it. This way I can play/babysit with my grandson 3-4 days a week and work nights, etc. Manure shoveling sounds better than some of the office politics I've seen over the years, that's for sure! I agree, I wish the pay was more and it is sad that people want experienced transcriptionists for 6 cpl:(
You go girl!!!! NM

YOU GO GIRL....
Misha,
I'm still laughing so forgive me if I make a few "typos" o.k.?
Having taken a break from MT and working in a law firm for about four years in the mid-1980s, knowing what I know about attorneys, I think you should send it. Lawyers, as much as doctors, have a great rivalry and there's nothing like publicity to whet a lawyer's appetite! I say YOU GO GIRL.....
