I have a BS in Accounting and two classes away from an MS, with which I will teach accounting and do consulting for small businesses.  In today's world, you need plan a and plan B because since 911, everybody is going to college and these kids come out hungry-they will take your job and make you train 'em.  I am too old to be downsized again, so I started my own business.  I love transcribing and do it as a supplement.  I will probably make about 35,000 doing transcription and about 11,000 doing what I have a degree in.  I consider myself smart, a great communicator, an even greater innovator but that does not pay the bills.   I fell into this job by accident 18 years ago.  I was fresh out of college - looking forward to working at BellSouth - they went on strike in 1984 when I graduated and things were never the same.  I got a job at a bank.  Had a dress code.  Carried my lunch and rode the bus all for $810 a month, did I say I had a degree.  (The job required it).  After two years of sneakers and suits, I took civil service exam, got a job at the local VA and the rest is history.  I work at home, flexible, using most of my knowledge on most days and will never be downsized because I'm the boss...
