as an IC you do not ask...

You set your wages, you are providing a service. They either accept it, or look elsewhere.
You need to take everything into consideration as it is. How much you are making now, what the going rate is in your area... and the economy...
In October 2008, after working for SEVEN YEARS without ever increasing my wages at my doctor's office, I decided it was time... Well they looked elsewhere after I submitted my new contract, and someone underbid me by 2 cents. They said they wanted to keep me and would continue paying me the same rate as they had been, although they expected my wages to go down anyway because they didnt want to pay for "templates" anymore.
Guess what... I walked.
It was a complete slap in the face to me. I was not asking for a huge increase, not even close. I was asking for a fair wage. If they had been paying employee benefits, I would have been paid way more the past 7 years.
I was disgusted, and am still pissy about it to be honest. I know, it's time to get over it... but it was like a little family there you know.
Just remember it is all about business, there is NO loyalty.
I found out the hard way.
I don't regret letting them go, but now with MT decreasing as it is... im just in a tough place, as I know many people are.
Think about what is important! and a backup plan if it goes bad.
Good luck.
