Can't find work...should I start a business?
I am about to finish up my certification at a local college and have been extremely disappointed to find that it seems no one is going to hire me to work for a company because I don't have 2+ years experience....even though I've spent the last 2 years transcribing school work....I am trying to decide if I'd just be better off to take what I've learned and try to start my own business. Financially, I am able to do it, but I'm just not sure how much of a headache it might be. What should I do? I kind of feel like I've wasted a lot of time and money. I'm pretty confident that I can do the work, but how can you prove that to someone who just wants to know if you have experience? I just don't know what to do.
Business cards, flyers, brochures, intro letters (sm)
network, network, network, persistence and lots of luck.
Read The Independent Medical Transcriptionist by Donna Avila-Weil .... worth it's weight in gold!
Does anyone know where I can find samples of brochures for....SM
business proposals? I paid to be a member on another MT website, so I can find that information out, but no one has emailed me or responded to any of my posts regarding this question. I am trying to put together a brochure, so I can hand out to the local clinics in my area. I thought I saw a thread somewhere, but I can't remember if it was here or on the other MT website. If anyone can help, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.
start up business
I've be MT for about 3 years working at home for another person who gets the clients. I want to break off on my own but I'm unsure how to approach a dr office. Don't know the 1st thing about contracts, equipment needed, negotiation, etc. Can anyone help me. I really want to start very small and expand. I currently get all file through FTP but would be willing to pick up tapes if local. Thanks for any help!
start up business
Thanks for the info... I will check that out!
Business start up
I was wondering about this too. I am not sure how to go about it but I hear there are some good programs on bytescribe. That is what I have been told by a few people who have their own clients. I wish I knew how to go about it all but I am not too sure, if you need more help or something, I might be interested. Where are you from?
START-UP BUSINESS -let's help eachother with Q's and A's
I am sure I am not alone...One of the many MTs that see potential in trying to start our own companies. I am a quality MT with some computer knowledge and a good sense for business. I created a website, created a introduction letter to send out along with a questionnaire...looking into writing up contracts, have a few good MTs lined up to help me out. Going to focus on orthopedics and physical therapy in my area to start with. Still need info on digital services and/or equipment to use. My biggest question is how to integrate with what a client has to get their reports into their systems, etc. Also curious on the going rate to start out with... Can we please have some Q's and A's here to help eachother out? I don't want to put too much time and money into this yet until I know I can get at least 1 client and build up from there. Hoping I can do this with an inexpensive FTP service that is HIPAA compliant. Want to stay all digital as I travel frequently. Do I need a business license before I even start up, or can I wait until I get my first client before applying for licenses etc? Lots of questions, lots of ideas...I am willing to trade for some good information :) Thanks!
Well, it all depends. What kind of business are you looking to start?
Want to start my own small business, need advice..sm
Hi all. I am looking to get started doing some transcribing on the side for myself, and perhaps turn it into a small business. Right now, I only have the capabilities of doing tapes and using Word as my software to transcribe in. I feel like I should look into digital and see how much the equipment would run, and how easy it would be to use. Does anyone have any recommendations on something that is relatively inexpensive for a beginner? Should I stick to my guns and start out with tapes first? Any advice would certainly be appreciated. I have been doing this for 16+ years and I feel like I shouldn't have any problems getting some local work drummed up. I am getting ready to type up some letters to send out and I guess I will go from there. Thanks in advance!!!!
I find it unlikely this company will be in business much longer...
that is just horrible.
find referrals or start searching
I don't know anyone who gets massages, so I have to go through the search process (yellow pages). Try one, if that doesn't work, try another. One who works on athletes is a good bet. When I call and talk to them, I tell them exactly what my problem is and what I'm wanting -- very deep tissue, therapeutic massage to work out the adhesions in the arms and lots of upper back/shoulder work. Ones who have been around awhile have worked on many with this exact problem. Unfortunately, not all of them will work for YOU, so it's a matter of trying one for a few months, then evaluating how you feel. If you're not better by then, move on. I just left one who I was SURE would help because of her style (rolfing), alas the arms got worse. I have one now who does exactly what I need. imho, gadgets and pills may relieve some pain, but they don't straighten out the muscles that's causing the problem. (btdt) If you can't go the professional route, get a shiatsu massager thingie, and dig that into your arms, shoulders, upper back and neck. They're all connected. The tingling I get in my little and ring fingers is relieved by working out the back of my shoulder. (I can't do my own massage well enough myself to maintain, but it's good for spot treatments.) The massage is painful, but it's worth it to keep my profession, and lifestyle, alive for me.
You and me both. MQ is totally sick. They had better find another type of business to get into
because they have failed miserably with this.
Gee, I dunno. Maybe since you find Americans fat and arrogant is a start

Flyers
Patti,
I am an IC with a desire to go on my own with local doctors. Would you mind sharing with me the kind of things you put on your flyer. Also, how do you go about getting the information from them about what kind of system they use. They usually have one don't they? I am a little familiar with dial in since I worked for a small MTSO on that kind of system, but I only know how it worked from my end. Do you find a lot of offices still use tapes and do most want printed copies of the reports?
Thanks for any information.
I sent out flyers...sm
I also bought a minicassette transcription machine. I live in a podunk little area where there are practitioners who still use the ol' tapes, so I thought that it would pay for itself when I received calls. It did. I sent the flyers a few months back and have received calls back from two clinics. One clinic was all online and had software for me to use to get in their computer. The other was tapes.
The Independent Medical Transcriptionist is a good place to get ideas. I would have liked a little less sensationalism in it (and I totally could have done without the Glamour Shots), but it's a pretty good place to start. The technology now is a bit more sophisticated than what they describe from their copyright date of 2002, but some ideas are timeless.
Good luck!
Examples of flyers
I am looking for examples of flyers to in the physican's boxes at the hospital for medical transcriptionist services. Does anyone know where I could find some good examples....or does anyone have something they would like to share with me (from someone that is not very creative making flyers/resumes). If you have something you wouldn't mind sharing you can email me at norma_OK@yahoo.com. Thanks for the help.
Professional flyers
I do flyers and they are very "professional" and so what if they offer a free car wash. I found that most office managers just want to "look" to see what it offers and I feel opening a letter is sometimes takes "too much time" while at a flyer they can just turn over and read immediately what it is about. Again, I think whether letter or flyers if you are at the right place at the right time, you can nab an account. And yes, have gotten several accounts that way and one has been with me for 18 years. So probably either works, I just prefer the flyer. But remember just like selling a house, it takes time and you have to put it out there to several hundred to get a bite. And once I get a bite I then go in and talk to them taking cookies or something. Also when I am looking for a new account I do several mailings about 6 - 10 weeks apart so I stay fresh in everyone's mind. I also inform my present docs and their gals and offer a small bonus to anyone that helps me land a new account I am sure that everyone has their way of soliciting for new accounts and it has worked for them and so they feel it is "the only way to go" but whatever route you take you have to get out there, be visible and that means to a lot of people as with that also you get word of mouth between offices.
Good luck.
Flyers/Brochures
Do what the rest of us have done if you want to design your own, buy the paper, write out what you want to say about your service, find a logo, business name, figure out how to put the two together and design your brochure. Or you can find a company that will design one for you when you supply all this information and pay them anywhere from $100 to $1000 depending on how fancy you want it to be. I put a lot of sweat, blood and tears into mine and I have been asked several times for copies and samples and guess after somone in the area used parts of it in their brochure after I have shared it, I just don't share anymore. If someone gets one through my mailings, that is different but I just don't mail off copies to others to "share" with due to the above fact. But they aren't hard to do, just takes time. And yes mine works as I have always signed on a new account when I do a mass mailing. But again, it reflects me and my company as yours should reflect you. Good luck, you can do it. Just start and it comes to you.

brochures/letters/flyers
Okay --everyone let me have it. I don't feel I am better than anyone but several of you have asked for me to E-mail you my brochure/flyer/letter that I use when contacting doctors and I am having a hard time doing so. It took me a long time to do the research, many hours/days and weeks designing my simple brochure that reflects me and my business and I guess I am scared that someone will scan it and just replace my name with yours and it took me a long time to do it. So am I wrong? I basically just have a logo, state what services I provide, price and what experience I have but it has worked for me. I don't like ignoring those of you who have asked but I am having trouble sending it to you. I have no problems offering any of you support, advice, tips on what I do but have trouble meeting this request and not thinking that any of you would simply duplicate it and guess it wouldn't be that big a deal so am I really a horrible person?
brochures/letters/flyers
No you are not a horrible person - and having owned my own Transcription Service for 15 yrs until my husband passed away 12 yrs ago....I WOULDN'T SHARE my hard work either!!
I think it is extremely kind of you to offer support, advice and tips. I can't fathom asking for another persons/business brochure, it is just not right and personally I think it shows lack of respect for you.
My two-cents...
cold calling/flyers/brochures
I have gotten several accounts that have been with me for years but I do a random flyer/brochure and then let them contact me. If they do, after I go in, I go back with cookies and reel them in. Seriously has worked for three accounts that have been with me from 4 to 15 years. Good accounts too.
Does anybody have any sample intro letters or flyers
they'd be willing to share? I'm just looking for something that you found effective when picking up your own accounts. I have a database of potential clients ready to go, but my flyer looks a bit cheesy. Thank you.
Flyers Fan too! Gotta cheer for the Steelers though! nm

Unfortunately it is legal..so yes it is business and they will continue with bad business practices

I made my business your business by posting and...
I totally respect everyone's opinions. It is easier for others on the outside looking in. That's why I pushed the "post reply" button yesterday. I trust my fellow MTs and I know the more I read from you all, the more confident I am becoming. I just need that final push, not from him though. I also wanted to let you all know that the physical abuse while I was pregnant was documented by my doctor and the hospital. I only wish I had known then that it is a felony to abuse a pregnant woman. I also photographed my face from a couple of weeks ago and told several people in my circle. I had such high hopes for us. Now...not so much. I'm not saying that I won't try to get him to church, but I realize that God can only do so much for someone who isn't listening. j

MY samples
I am the poster accused of holding MY normals hostage. Cleaned off the sample and just left in headings. And this was a sample with a table in it and I omitted that even. Then I sent the doc. But again, all they had to do was make a copy of a done job and that would have been the end of it. The only thing, I don't think this person was ever smart enough to figure that out. lol.
You need samples
of the work or offer to a do a trial for a week so you can get an idea of what a page contains and average it out.
I charge my NJ client $3/page but first did a one-week trial and gave my estimate based on that. They also claimed they had local transcriptionists willing to do it for $2. I did not drop my rate, and they went with me anyway. Just thought I'd share that to prove you can charge a higher rate and still get the account. ;D
samples, samples, samples. That is sm
the way she will learn what her dictators are saying. Surely they have some available to her?
Samples
Go to www.mtdaily.com. They have samples of a lot of reports done by transcriptionists. The job board, classifieds, and samples are free services.
report samples
Does anyone know of a web site with surgical report samples and EMG reports? I've searched google for hours and can only find informartion ABOUT them, not actual reports....
Thanks for ANY help!
seeing samples like that just makes
you realize just how valued and appreciated you are by the nationals and AMMT who believe offshoring is good for the industry, doesn't it??? NOT!!
Can you ask your supervisor for samples of
the ESL doctors' other reports? This will help you can get a handle on what they say frequently.
You have a great attitude. Remember if you can transcribe ESLs, you can transcribe anything. Good luck!
Definitely agree with getting samples. Get
lots of them. They'll save you a lot of time.
For me, I'll listen to a word a couple of times and if I can't understand it, I leave a blank and finish out the rest of the report. Then, I go back to the blank and re-listen again and if I can't for the life of me figure out what the dictator is trying to say at all then I go ahead and leave the blank.
I use Google also. I'll type in the phrase after the blank or before the blank in case something comes up that looks familiar or sounds right.
And lastly, I also stop and walk away for a second from my PC just to clear my head and re-listen again and sometimes just doing that helps.
Good luck! If you can conquer those dreaded ESLs you can conquer anything.
Ask for samples of work...nm

You must get samples of their reports so you can see what they are saying. sm
Most ESLs say the same thing, in the same way, over and over. If English is difficult for them, then they learn a way to say something, and always say it that way. Good luck.
Ask for samples. It really helps to see what they are saying. sm
Most ESLs say the same things the same way, over and over. You just need to see what they are saying. Then you get it.
I believe MT Desk has samples.

Can't you get any samples from your doc? Eyes are
s
dictation samples
I sent you an email with some info.
Samples? It depends. sm
Sometimes you'll get a large set of sample reports for various physicians. Sometimes you have access to prior reports in the system (which, I have always felt, is a bit dangerous, as far too many times I've seen errors carried over from report to report on a difficult dictator simply because people pulled their samples/canned text from earlier reports that contained mistakes).
Usually, though, when starting out and you have no samples for a particular dictator you just do what you can with him/her then request a corrected copy (or sample) from QA ... that's what I have done, anyway, when I've come across a particularly challenging dictator.
Good luck.
MT Desk also has samples.

I'm afraid the deodorant samples were not a gag...
tho I wanted to gag after opening the box! Yes, that could be true about wanting others (strangers) around since our parents died - I suppose it IS easier emotionally, in a way. Its like being at an office party.
What aggravates me are normals and samples
full of obvious typos and stylistic issues that we MTs get dinged for. In fact, I remember having a normal op at one place that had a made-up instrument name in it. It kept coming up on the spell check. Took me months to finally find the proper name.
I've come to expect sloppy and/or poorly written emails from managers and admin staff otherwise.
terminology test samples
I have been searching and searching and searching google, etc. to find a written terminology test to hire two inhouse transcriptionists that I will be interviewing this week. Everyone who comes in the door says they "know" transcription and they "have lots of experience" on their resume, but I find out they don't "know" transcription. I need a test that is pretty broad, that is written, and that is FREE. I can test them on digital physicians, but would really like you see how they handle a terminology test too. Been on internet for two hours now to no avail. Can someone help me? I am only interviewing for inhouse positions (2), so don't everyone flood me with requests for jobs....only inhouse.....only in Southern Indiana. Please? Thanks for your help!!!
Thank you for the IC contract samples! Looks great. : )
I had an MTSO send samples
and had spelling errors.... And she is correcting my work? Puleeze!!! I have 20 years of experience as well and do just fine with my own account making a heck of a lot more than what an MTSO will pay, so it is no sweat off my back to dump the picky ones who are not even right themselves. Their loss not mine!
Ask you acct for samples to look at. And get the Dorland's
s
Can your employer furnish any samples? SM
They will be really hard to do asking online.
There are sites with operative report samples, that may provide some help. Just google.
Not sure if there are any of that on this, but you can check out. Seen some radiology samples in the
