Our hospital had a benevolence fund. If people couldn't pay their bills, we could contribute with our PTO. A couple times we were strong-armed by the department head to contribute some of our hard-earned PTO to someone in our department who pi$$ed away their pay and then had their utilities turned off. There is hardship and then there are those who take every hour of vacation when they earn it and then expect others to "help" them. I couldn't wait to get out of there.
