Associate in Applied Medical Science, Bachelor's in Liberal arts with emphasis on Psychology
and looking for a way to get out of MT before voice rec takes over!
Kids are grown and gone and I no longer need to be home all day. The cats don't need as much supervision as the kids did.
Two associates--health science, radiography; and applied science, medical transcription. NT
Blasted cold out today. It was 104 degrees last week, but it's 40 degrees today with rain.
However, I do like cozy days like today when I don't have to go anywhere. I'm done working, the house is clean, there's chili on the stove for dinner already, and I'm just putzing around. I think I'll go bake some jalapeno cheese bread to go with the chili.
Bachelors of General Studies
Summa cum laude, thank you very much.
Long, complicated story. Basically, I'm a clinical year short of a Clinical Laboratory Science degree, but I won't go back and pursue it barring losing my husband. Also, if I'd have thought more carefully when I switched out of the CLS program, I was only 3 or 4 classes short of a B.A. in psychology. Oh, well. What I ended up with is essentially a liberal arts degree with lots and lots of science classes and lots of psychology classes and a smattering of language studies.
Like some of the other posters, my ultimate goal is to get into P.A. school once my youngest kiddos are school age. I think I'm too old for med school now, but it raises my hopes to see the post below. Being a transcriptionist pays the bills, but some days I do kinda get upset with myself. Here I am doing the same thing I went to school not to do any more. Sigh...
MTing is not bad, but I just don't get enough people contact, and it certainly doesn't have a lot of money or prestige associated with it. Sigh.. again. Ah, well. It works for my family right now.
Bachelors versus Associates?
Thank you for your response. Glad to hear I am not the only one. Out of curiousity, would you suggest going for a bachelors right away? A $15/hr job covers everything I need in order to work outside the home (i.e. daycare coverage and gas), so I would be more than happy with that and I already have 1 semester of generals that transfer from a different associates degree, so would only really be needing to go for 1-1/2 years, so figure an associates to start with might be the way to go. What would you do (now that you already have your associates and haven't been able to find much)?
Currently working on bachelors degree in Psychology

Culinary arts
There is a demand for the culinary arts field. Depending on where you live, you can land a pretty sweet job in an upscale hotel or restaurant, or even start your own business. I thought of that also because I love to cook and consider myself a gourmet cook. The reason I did not pursue culinary arts is that my tastes are limited - I don't like most seafood or organ meats, and some of these gourmet dishes require a wide, and I do mean wide, palate of taste! Good luck to you and do what your heart desires.
Remember ARTs?
Accredited Records Technicians? They used to offer that program when I was learning transcription, about 25 years ago. Do they still have those? I haven't heard anyone mention that title in years.
Science Writers
Believe it or not, the medical terminology we have would really be an excellent preparation for becoming science writers. OK, one drawback -- you need a Masters degree. But the pay is really good -- reportedly six figures. There are associations for science writers, I have this info in a book I was reading.
I've said before that general transcription seems to pay better than MT. I'm on an online group and we just took polls of how much we charge per audio hour and I believe the average hovered around $100. Depending on how fast you type, that can pay better than MT.
Transitioning into a VA (virtual assistant) if you have other computer/office skills than "just" transcription is a possibility. VAs as ICs apparently start at $30 an hour.
You can see I've been looking into this myself! ;)

Bachelor of Fine Arts - sm
Used to do craft shows (high dollar ones not flea markets) for jewelry, sterling silver and niobium. Once kids are out of school will probably get back into it again, have a full studio collecting dust - never made tons of $, but $400-$800 gross a weekend at a good show.
It's not the fact that she said "rocket science"
Sarcastic and rude, and why? What purpose was there for that? The only purpose of the sarcasm was to make herself feel better by trying to belittle someone else. Tacky at best, especially coming from an administrator.
Engineering and science "geek"
I will take it in fun too. Don't know how I veered off track but I always liked math and science. I think if I could go back I might study math or engineering and try to get a job at NASA.
As it is, I am considering getting a second BS (in math this time) and working towards a MS in Biostatistics/Bioinformatics or MPH in Epidemiology (with concentration in Biostatistics).
What do you need a Master's Degree in to be a science writer?
?
Associate's Degree in Medical Secretarial Science - sm
2-year program with emphasis on transcription. Terrific - wouldn't have learned it any other way. Taught me to be a good MT - not these quick-fix on-line programs where everyone things they can early a huge salary as soon as they are done.
My daughter teaches social studies and science.
She works the after-school program at her school for extra money, and an occasional Saturday school (also extra money). She has also signed up to teach summer school, and may do some private tutoring as well.
Just some ideas for you.
I have been doing MT for about 4 years now, and average about $10 an hour at 7 cents per line (no raise since I started). There is a tremendous learning curve, I did not feel productive and competent at all for the first couple of years. I got my certificate from the local community college. They offered night classes for the beginner course, then an on-line advanced course. I should point out that a certificate from any school does not make you a CMT (certified medical transcriptionist). For that you have to pass the test given by AAMT, and as I recall you cannot test until you have 2 years of experience.
Good luck with whatever you decide.
Ordered from Medical Arts Press catalog
on a previous job. They have different styles and sizes to choose from.
I'm going to a local community college for culinary arts, I'm 52. nm

Proper or pretentious to use *AA* (assoc/arts) after one's name professionally? (nomsg)

Assciate in Arts, medical secretarial curriculum. 2 years with courses in sm
anatomy and physiology, biology, clinical biology (taking and processing lab tests--drawing blood on each other!!), filing, skills on all types of office machines, English composition, accounting, psychology, economics, medical terminology/transcription, and, of course, typing. In the second year we did internships at local city hospitals.
I went into transcription after working as a medical secretary for 7 years in a very large clinic.
you obviously buy into the liberal
rhetoric. That's bull. Most of the planet admires us because we are free and prosperous which is why we have so many thousands upon thousands who are trying to get in here every year. We also have 60+ countries as allies for the Iraq war. I think you are getting the word hate confused with the word jealous which is definitely the case with a lot of the Europeans because they know deep down inside that their socialist society is not working and never will and our system does.....
He is a liberal. Yes,
From what I heard, Republicans also lauded the movie.
Whether or not he wants to keep Democrats in power has nothing to do with the argument.
None of the facts in the move have been refuted.
We have a system in which millions of working people cannot afford so-called "health" insurance and people are dying. This is immoral.
Also what has "people who have never worked in their lives" got to do with this question on health care?
Can you imagine a situation in which you needed a surgical procedure to save your life or the life of a family member and it was denied for no reason that made sense to you - basically to save these companies money, would your view still be that health care coverage for all regardless of ability to pay is not the answer?
I can't do this NY more. Actually ready to go out. Try a little compassion though. It feels good!
Merry Christmas.
...does not make me a liberal. nm.

Yep - thank you liberal loony TV execs
for taking advantage of the captive audience of mindless sheep that watch the idiot box daily.
Starting way back when with "All in the Family" when it started by suggesting to us that we don't want to be like the fat mean guy who's sick of the way the world's going (make him look stupid and closed-minded, while Mike and Gloria are just so reasonable and "cool") to the Jerry Springer Show, MTV, and all the less obvious but just as effective little cuts and digs that are made on the more "credible" shows. You know, the shows that make it look like anyone who is sick of this crap is a toothless hick wearing a white hood and yelling "white power", this country is almost the whole way down the toilet - celebrate diversity folks - isn't it great?
For a translation of this posting, "if you prefer English press 1," "If you prefer Spanish press 2," if you prefer it to be spoken to a background of rap music press . . . ."
That's how the liberal loonies keep them in their place
Keep them stupid, uneducated and DEPENDENT and they'll vote for any free program they promise them. Pretty transparent.
This is another angry liberal loony
Gloom, doom, hatred, anger.
People like this really have way too much time on their hands.
There's the liberal New York Times for ya.......

I think the foreign kid adoptions are liberal Hollywood
I don't think these kids are anything more than a fashion accessory/photo op for these phonies. I'm sure she and the other "stars" who adopt these kids for whatever attention/approval-seeking reasons have a full staff on hand 24/7 to take care of the kids when the cameras aren't rolling.
I doubt Angelina's ever been vomited on or crapped on (at least not by her kids anyway).
Oh gawd, you MUST be a liberal... You all think you're so enlightened.
x
I never called anyone a loony -- heck, I'm a liberal myself. sm
My only point is, people who don't believe in Christmas, including those in the ACLU and all of the others, still want the day off. My feeling is, if you don't believe in Christ or the reason for the holiday, why not work it? The day means nothing to you. I used to work for a man who took off for Yom Kippur and Rosh Hashanah (sorry for the misspelling), and I respected that, but didn't jump up and down and expect to have the days off too.
Who cares - he's a liberal loony freak anyway.
.
Typical liberal, start with the name-calling when you have nothing else
So typical, "Don't do as I do, do as I say".
Failure, uneducated, jealous, resentful, TYPICAL.
I liked his music but he's way too liberal loony agenda for my taste
JMO
I work for a hospital that is pretty liberal as far as formatting goes. SM
They have a basic template that they like us to adhere to as far as headings, font, font size, etc. However, when it comes to more detailed formatting, they really have no set standards and leave it to our best judgment.
My question is regarding the medication heading. Do you list the medications in a numbered list or in paragraph form? I have a friend who is a nurse and she says the clinical staff, i.e. Nurses and Doctors like to have the medications in a numbered list because it makes finding them in a report a whole lot easier. So would you list them even if the dictator is not saying "number 1, 2, 3,..."?
I think the parents should be held
responsible. I'm sure the rules are less strict for older kids (he is 16). But it seems a waste of time for the teachers if he is going to only show up part of the every week. He seems to think it is funny that he has really, really bad grades. Seems he is just wasting a spot at school and the teacher's time.
They held my return
They held my return as the name on the W2 did not match my SS#. Had to change it. Also with all of the problems with illegals it might even be tighter now. Good luck, why don't you just change it???
At my place we are held to the same
rules like applies for most, having to keep and maintain a high score of 97-98%, reports pulled 4-5x a year to check and we are graded so the answer to your question would be no, not just the bigger issues. Fast forward audio means I keep my audio at the fastest speed I can always, only slowing down to hear something I might not hear well. I do not use hot keys, only the mouse, was told others could edit more but that would be teaching an old dog new tricks. I really do not have any secrets, type straight really fast and I have for years, and still keep an hr by hr line count just to see how I am doing.
Typical hateful liberal. Taking pleasure in someone else's misfortune.
You're a real piece of work.
That is an opinion and the same view could be held
by MQLover and others who support MQ.
Rude and offensive are opinions...what some find rude and offensive others don't.
Apparently, everyone who complains about MQ doesn't find their posts rude and offensive, do they? No. So from their perspective, they aren't doing anything wrong but venting.
Same with MQLover. I don't personally care for her style but she and a few of the others are venting. It is their opinion. They aren't using foul language, which can be objectively judged and banned.
It's a matter of choice as to whether you want to read the posts or not. I think it is a reflection of how those supporting MQ really feel about those who constantly complain about it.
By the way, one of the posters in an above thread has found the perfect MQ complaint forum! It's called the Employee Complaint Form on QNet! Please use it if you have a problem with MQ!
If this is Spheris, they said the gifts were held up in

I have a Goldtouch. It has held up for two or three years already. nm

Are you held to a standard of lines per day.
If so, what is that standard. We have 1200 lines a day or 150 lines an hour. Is this the average out there?
I held down the clear button and the screen
cleared, but the program button will not work still...no buttons do. Maybe in another day it will dry out, but I need to work today. :(
Thank you for the help though!
ah yes, the hand-held recorder is portable.

Hand-held digital recorders. sm
Does anyone have anything to say about any particular model? I am thinking along the lines of Olympus or Philips. Thinking a docking device best. Any comments? Thanks!
I have held all the positions I mentioned without having an RHIT.
She was asking for ideas. I gave her some.
Maybe it was tough for you but it doesn't have to be for her. :)
Two questions: 1) What hand-held recorder do
voice files from their recorder to an FTP site or whatever to be transcribed? Does the doctor merely have to set his recorder on a docking station and the files are automatically transferred? I've only had doctors calling in by phone in the past, never using hand-helds.
I've seen hand-helds for $100 and also for $500. Just wanting a recommendation for a good recorder that is very easy for the doctor to use. If it's not easier than calling in, he won't go for it.
Being held to 5 reports a day is just crazy anyway! You learn by doing! nm

Hand-held digital recorder
No, you have it all wrong. I need the hand-held recorder in order to dictate passages for a novel to be transcribed at a later date/point in time. I have the player software, but need a hand-held recorder.
Many co. use Canadian MTs. There are also many accounts in Canada held by U.S. MTSOs

I held both of my parents as they died from complications of smoking.
I told my children they were free to smoke after they did the same. There's not one smoker among my extensive circle of friends and associates, thank goodness.
Which hand-held unit is simplest for doctors? sm
Need a handheld unit, but need to know of simplest one for doctors to use. Also, is there a program that uploads the dictation as soon as you connect the unit that sends it automatically? Thanks.
