before they had even surveyed the land, etc., so they had no idea what any name was only lot numbers. when she found out her street name would be "ennis way" she tried to move to another lot but there was nothing open. I didn't get it until she pointed out how close it sounds to the male body part. i laugh every time i go over there.

Tell your friend she is not likely to get medical billing job from home
I would venture to say 99.9% of medical offices use a computer system for their billing which has HCFA formatting and electronic submission built right in. It is pretty easy to do coding in the office setting too. In good conscience, could not recommend investing money in training for either field...
Yes, I bought myself a congratulatory latte and took a nap when I got home.
Had to get up at 4:45 to get to the testing place, and I am NOT a morning person. I'm still tired but pleased. Yes, I like MSCMT!
no, it is not under construction - just went there..sm

Construction
The things that you can do to earn money is limited only by your creativity in thinking of them. Who would have thought that people with a dog poop cleaning route would earn money? There are husband and wife teams cleaning/painting apartment buildings, doing window washing, doing acid staining of concrete, refinishing bathtubs and tile, spraying Kool deck coatings around pool areas, and if you or your husband is a woodworker, those CNC (computer numerically controlled) routers like ShopBot can enable you to do incredible things from making computer-cut out cabinets to copying pictures in 3-D for sale. (No, I don't work for ShopBot; I have been to several seminars with husband who has one in the high school shop where he teaches.)
go and be a man, find a man's job, construction,
Do you wear women's clothing as well? I bet you're decked out on grandma's stockings as we speak.
The construction workers are not all
People in the construction business do require certain licenses. They are not all uneducated making $30.00 an hour.
New MTs should be on this board so they can get a reality check. If you plan to stay in this field, just be cautioned that will not make more unless you transcribe more lines and put in more hours. That's the bottom line and I'm speaking from 20 years of experience and I'm in my late 30s still raising two children along with my husband.
OK. Now there are construction guys out front
using a big saw to cut through our new concrete sidewalks that have already been dug up twice since being put in this spring. I can't hear to work. They didn't even warn us of any construction or water shutoffs. How many times do they have to dig up the same old spot this year before they get it right?
But how many female construction workers??
nm
Okay shopping for a house and I found new construction.
The name of the street is Wild Turkey Walk. I refuse to buy a house on Wild Turkey Walk. Another street is Squirrel Run. How does a person come up with these names? I want the job of naming streets in new subdivisions. Has anyone been shopping for houses, new or old, and refused to live on a silly named street?
Not coming up w/ much except construction paper...tyring to avoid that if I can. Thanks anyway. nm

How about your husband tells the friend to tell his female friend to lose the #?

I bought a wedge at Michael's for about 59 cents. Bought one for my SM
Lanier station so I could see the display and one for my keyboard.
A friend of a friend is taking CareerStep - sm
she is under the misguided idea that she will be making very good $ upon completing the course (a friend of hers supposedly makes $55K a year). I told her no way, at least not starting out and not unless all the factors click together, i.e. good typing speed, good pay (not for a newbie), good dictators (unlikely) and dedication to working hard. I told her what I make after 5 years (16K) but that is PT and I have the potential to double that if I would push myself, not procrastinate so much (I web surf way too much) and work more than I already do. I am not a fast typist but am good at what I do. I will be surprised if she follows though. She told me she'd call me when she finished the course, I just hope she is ready for reality.
My kids have suffered greatly from me working at home with them home. SM
I have been working at home as an MT since my two kids were born. They are now 4 and 5. In the first few years, I had no help whatsoever. Their father was a bum who didnt work or take care of them while I worked. Your children get neglected while you work basically. And babies and young children desperately need your attention while they are home with you.
My kids have so many behavioral problems right now because of their neglect. I would try to set them up with things to occupy themselves, like coloring or a movie, etc.
I finally put them in day care and things have improved, but there are still a lot of issues because of the damage that was done. They still try to seek attention by doing bad things and they dont listen to me because they are so used to me letting them get away with a lot of stuff because I was too busy typing to discipline them in their early years.
If I could do it all over again, I would definitely have put them into day care from the very beginning.
My advice would be to seek PT care for your baby. Maybe you can do some work around her schedule a little when she is home, like when she takes a nap, and then bang out a bunch of work while she is in day care.
I enjoy being alone at home, but I've got one home sick from school already.
One on one with a kid is nice, too.
This summer has been absolutely crazy. I haven't had a moment to myself for three months because all of my kids were home traipsing their friends through the house and yard. My husband switched his work schedule, too, so he's around more than usual. However, I like not having to do two loads of dishes and four loads of laundry a day. There are no toys or clutter dragged out everywhere. I can clean the house first thing in the morning, and it stays clean until everyone gets home at night.
I even got to relax with a cup of coffee and watch TV for half an hour this morning, something I liked for a change instead of cartoons or kids' movies. I signed up for an online class that I've been wanting to take. I can exercise without being interrupted. Yesterday, I went to the mall and spent all my saved up gift cards. I got some clothes, books, bath stuff, and a new coffee mug. My work gets done a lot faster, too. Call me nuts, but I've never had the luxury of being alone in the house for 14 years. It's kinda nice. I love my family with all my heart, but I love having a few hours to myself each week, too.
Except now the cat and dogs have been acting weird since the kids went back to school. They must think that I need someone or something to clean up after and correct behavior on. They're getting into everything and racing around the house behind me.
my take is that she worked inhouse, not at home, and now wants to find out how to work at home. nm

Forget "per line." Your take-home pay should be taking home SM
roughly what it was before. If it is not, is it because your current pay rate for editing (which in many companies keeps changing as the VR system is developed) is too low or is it because your talents and skills are more for speed typing than speed editing?
If the first, discuss it with higherups, and go get a new job if you don't get the response you need. My last MTSO was secretly refiguring how production was counted to pay us less. I can accept hard reality, it was the secrecy that burned. Sometimes, though, it's just that the learning curves of individual editors and that of the system aren't in sync, and you end up temporarily making less.
If the second, though, recognize it as soon as possible and change to straight transcription work, in your company or a new one, for as long as you can find it.
As for why we aren't paid more for a higher skill, that's just the way the labor supply ball bounces. Best wishes.
I think she means she has wireless TO her home, not IN her home..nm

hospital at-home -vs- national at home
I have an interview today with a hospital...work in-house for 3 months, then go home, paid on production. I don't know as of yet what they pay production, so my question is to anyone who works for a hospital at home AND has also worked for a national at home...
Which would be the best to choose? The hospital offers great benefits, but the national I work for now also has benefits, not as good as the hospital, though. Any input would be most appreciated!
Looking for friend
Hundreds of people are coming into Alabama and Florida away from NO and Mississippi. Go to www.nola.com (Times-Picayune newspaper in New Orleans) and look for message boards. Local papers and other shelters are posting names. Still waiting to hear about family members from Gautier, Long Beach, and Gulfport, MS. Hope you hear from her soon!
To "a friend"
I wanted to personally thank you for your opinion and also for putting yourself out there for me. The serious physical abuse for me happened mostly while I was pregnant (both times)with his children. He had not touched me in three years until two weeks ago. I am aware that I am in a volatile situation and I am doing something about it. I just needed to reach out today for some comfort and support. I feel I got both. I'm sorry I opened the door for people on here to hurt you. That was not my intention. Thank you and big hugs for paying attention to me. J.
Same here. Have a friend who is
a biller who is the same way. We all work at home and have very little people contact. It makes you a little agoraphobic. I have to run all my errands at once, or I will not do them. All the MTs I know are the same way. Can we get disability for this?LOL
Tell your friend
She can go online and change the settings on her bandwidth from the Vonage site. We had some problems and found out it was our cable modem. The strength of the service depends on your internet provider as well.
Is this a friend of yours? nm

not a friend...sm
actually, it's a patient that I did a note on...the doc went into great detail about her home life, her husband, her finances...but it still burns me up ! I'd love, love to talk to her...but guess my prayers will have to do...
think twice about a friend
Rather than worrying about training a newbie, I would think twice about a friend. I have had friends as IC's whichI have helped to train as well as just newbies. It is hard to keep that line between friendship and working relationship especially if you are the one giving her the work, checking the work and training her. Have almost lost two friends over this because they felt because they were friends I would understand their problems, family problems, time off needed, not getting work back, etc. They saw me work and bring in the big bucks and wanted to share in it but did not understand how it worked. You don't produce work, you don't get paid. I have trained a lot of people and helped out a lot but never again will it be a friend that is actually doing work for me. If they are working for someone else, I will help them out but just not for me. So I worry more about it being a friend than a newbie. Patti
Have a friend who is MT and she has
bought this, paid quite a bit for it. She had used escription before and now she does straight. She has arthritis in her hands and trying to alleviate some of the pain she has with straight but said wasted her money, tried and tried to educate the machine and still not worth the money she spent.
My friend went not once, but twice. sm
My friend went and she loved it. I lost touch with her the last time she went back. They did live in a compound and you had to adhere to the religious, traditional ways over there. When you left the compound you had to wear a burka. She said they furnished you your own really nice apartment. I thought about going back then, but with the political climate, I am too afraid. After all, they are our "allie" (wink), and over 10 of the 911 bombers were from Sauda Arabia our "allie" (wink).
My friend said she
could never do this as she's not disciplined enough. She's honest as it does take discipline.
You get out of it what you put in. Pretty simple!
i have a friend
Who is working for Inscribe, and is very happy there. She says that the people are nice, and there is always enough work. They hire part time, as long as you can commit to 20 hours a week.
very well put my friend.

I have a friend...sm
I have a friend who works at home as a MT for a hospital and her internet is disabled somehow where she can't go on or check email or anything. I was like I don't know what I would do because like you I think the quickest way to find something you aren't sure of is to go on the internet. But the computer she uses to work belongs to the hospital so I guess she can't say anything.
your friend
Gosh, been there, done that, religious beliefs has nothing to do with it, went to one of these hospitals to "heal" and give them my all in terms of experience, etc., willing to take less for the comfort of being in a peaceful place. This was nothing near what I expected; in fact, the worst experience of my life. One of the "supers" was nutty as a fruitcake, slammed doors in people's faces, made people cry, etc., but no one did anything for a whole year about her after I left in tears. The suits rule, but put your complaint in the "Bishop's" hands and see if he has what it takes to walk his talk. I can relate, it was the worst 6 months of my life but somehow evil will not prevail if you have the guts to go forward with what you know she went through, even anonymously, if you have to, then let the chips fall where they may. Hopefully, in God's hands, not yours. So sorry for your friend, I know what she went through. Thanks for sharing and God bless you for caring
re your friend.
this is America. Talk about what you want to. My heart goes out to you all in the loss of your friend. but stand up and don't be a door mat. You cannot be walked on if you don't lay down and let them. I had a mean supvr and it happened to be in a Catholic hospital. I refused to do what i was told (practice forging doctor's names) and it was quite a scene. Once i stood up for what was right, it gave the others courage to do so. i didn't lose my job either. but if you do, you were looking for one when you found this one, right? be strong; set the example and don't follow in your friend's footsteps to the same end. God bless. p.s. Catholics follow the pope first and Christ second. To me, that does not a Chrisian make.
So sorry about your friend
Maybe this is just my personality constantly bucking heads with authority, but I really enjoy working from home. You have a very marketable skill, and there is a lot of work out there for you to do. They do not own you. You rent PART of your life to them when you work. They have no right to work you to death. Would looking for other opportunities, home or otherwise be an option? There is a lot of work out there for experienced MTs.
very well put my friend.

I had a friend who was...
a pharmacy tech. He went to school for that believing that it would pay decent, but he ended up disappointed. He said the pay stunk and it was extremely boring. Maybe others have had a different experience.
Had a friend who did it. (SM)
She was about 40, I think, when she made the switch. I know the training took her almost two years to get the point (speed, accuracy) where she was employable.
I remember she told me they start you out doing "one voice", then "two voices", etc., until (I think) you get to where you can do either five or six voices like a conference or a deposition.
It was very hard, but she's making pretty good money now. She works for herself, not for a court, and has a number of attorneys and companies for clients.
Also, my friend who is an MT at one of
these hospitals has virtually no work now that they are in the process of converting to EMR. She is being sent to different doctor's offices to abstract (pull important info from reports to put on EMR) since she has no (or very little) MT work now.
Had a friend who was on VR
she had rheumatoid arthritis and her hands after years of straight were killing her. She did not like VR and at age 50 something got inhouse job working at hospital in town, not doing transcription but in the medical field. Not for everyone.
Just bought two
Bought a desktop and a laptop a month ago. The desktop had a problem with the CD drive not opening. I called Dell and they promptly handled the situation. The repair person called my home the following day to schedule an appointment. He showed up on time, picked up after himself, etc. Very polite and very professional.
My only complaints so far: being on hold for 40 minutes before talking with a Customer Service rep and the young man I spoke with when my call finally was answered. Where he was from -- I don't know, but he had a very thick accent and with my southern twang ears, he was quite difficult to understand.
Yes, I just bought one and the
service is TERRIBLE. Can't understand us. I had to keep repeating my questions, still they did not seem to understand English. I will never, never, never buy a Dell product again. I just got it yesterday. The computer is okay, but the service is the pits. They have such strong accents, didn't understand me, I had to keep repeating my sentences, talking very slowly. They also were hard to understand. I want to write Dell corporate and complain, but can't even find a place that is not in India to complain to.
After this experience, I am totally not worried about transcription going to India. The quality must be so bad, after what I experienced, it will eventually come back. Any company that outsources, the reports must be very poor quality.
LOL. My mom bought one of those when
it the the COOLEST thing!
i just bought
A Holmes Family Safe Portable Heater, mostly because it's kid-friendly. So far so good. If my house burns down, though, I'll let you know :) j/k It had a lot of good features and keeps my bedroom toasty, which is probably a bit bigger than your office.
I bought a little
flash drive when I bought my new computer. You just load the program onto it and plug it in to your new one and transfer. They're very inexpensive and USB. Very easy
I bought it new
Straight from AAMT in the shrink-wrap (I got a discount through my employer)..
I don't call it a typo when they refer to it wrong twice, as they do in this instance. I call it a mistake! And it makes me lose confidence in the rest of the book, as well as lose respect for the authors.
If people find it amusing - WHY? I don't think its acceptable to just expect typos in every book you buy, because I know darn well people are PAID to edit copy before its published, and someone wasn't doing their job! With fiction I can snort with disgust and move on. But professional books should be accureate, considering it was written BY AND FOR an entire industry based on inherentt perfectionism regarding the written word and terminology!
I was forced to buy this book to supposedly hone MY skills, only to find THEIR skills are lacking. This is the supposed bible of our industry! I am referred to this book a zillion times in my company standards. And if I cannot rely on it for accuracy, why yes, I am angry. If you want to see me as a nutcase, that's your prerogative.
I posted this oriiginally so people could mark this error in their book instead of perhaps putting the BOS spelling n their spell checker, and get penalized for repeated errors as a result. I was hoping others might post any additional errors they had found in this publication, and we could help one another in this respect. Perhaps someone might take this post seriously enough to do so, and if they do, I appreciate it.
Yes bought it used. sm
The foot pedal is brand new.
just bought
myself Koss UR40 headphones. They look like DJ headphones...very, very comfortable and unbelieveable sound. I highly recommend them. I bought them at Radio Shack.
Just bought one...will let you know. (nm)
xx
I think its great what you did for your friend
A few of us were planning an "intervention" where we confront her basically to tell her we think she needs help, because the pain has made her very depressed and she is just not herself anymore. I will look into finding her a rheumatologist myself, since that is probably all it takes, and also pushing her in the right direction. Although like your friend, I know she will be angry, but gotta do it. She can barely move and I can see the pain on her face. I don't think anyone should live in chronic pain. Thank you for your kind words
I have a friend that is an excellent MT and she -
dances one or two nights a week in the fall. It's not for me, but hey, it works for her!
