You know, people are totally spoiled now

In Reply to: New in-office job has NO spell check - Jennifer

When I started out we worked on typewriters (do you know what those are?)- some had correcting tapes - you hit the backspace and typed the same mistake, took that off and then you backed spaced again and continued typing. On the first several computers we had no spellchecking at all. Where I learned we had to have less than 3 errors (either medical or English) on a page before we could get production pay. Our work was much, much better than what I see just being posted on here with the misspellings, etc. I use spellcheck now but only because, first of all required and secondly just makes me feel better but not a crutch for me in any way.

Totally agree. Her kids are brats and spoiled with dirty money. I know she works

I totally agree...how old are we to call other people stupid???
Give me a break...we do not go to school for countless number of years and just because we have to correct a doctor's spelling on certain things, doesn't mean we are smarter than they are...give me a break...if you were expecting to making 75,000 in this field you made the wrong career decision...how about a little bit of respect for a fellow MT...
Totally not MT related but lots of smart people here for advice, I hope.
My son had a girlfriend some 8 years ago, she ran off with another guy to another state and it really didn't hurt my feelings at all.  They had gone through a lot in the less than a year that they were together including my son helping her cope with a rape trauma that she had been through.  I wish truly I could remember the number of months between the rape and her leaving, but I felt it was a short time.  That really doesn't matter, but 5 years ago this girl sent an e-mail telling us our son was the possible father of her child "you do the math" but she "really thinks the other guy is the father."  My son called her and she was going to send paperwork but never did.  Now jump forward to yesterday, my son gets notified via phone that she's looking for him, that she has his daughter, and we're really not sure what to do.  The girl does not know where we or my son lives but knows the general area.  I'm afraid she'll just show up on my doorstep one day but my son doesn't live here anymore, he's a man with a life of his own.  What would you do?  Does anyone know the legality of all this?
Funny how people are different. I find islands/beaches to be totally boring.

spoiled...
"As I tell my girls." That speaks volumes about your attitude. You need to be back in the 1950s.

No doctor, nurse or any other health professional bases their treatment on a typed report on the chart - and if any of your employees believe that bunk, they deserve to have you as a boss.
Wow, I must be a spoiled
I could never imagine staying in one job for that long if I was as miserable as you appear to have been for quite some time (20 years).

I have only been at this for five years. I have worked in two major hospitals, one clinic, and at home. I have always DETESTED working inside, especially during the day and especially with meaningless office banter and gossip, not to mention the snobbery of most upper management or "administrators".

This led to me to MT at home, which I love. I do not work for a large national with multiple benefits, so what you are offered sounds good to me.

Honestly, as long as you can keep your production going (overtime is not a problem where I work...they would love you for it) and not let the isolation that sometimes is overwhelming (for some...not all)from bothering you, it sounds to me that you enjoy working at home.

IMO, VR and India will not take all of the jobs before you plan to retire. I don't know where you live, but where I am, there are plenty of IC jobs to choose from. I am honestly too lazy to go after them because I like not having to deal with all of that. I like to get lines, get paid, and be able to play with my dogs and wear pajamas. So, in that way, I am spoiled.

I would try to secure another job before quitting my first, though. It can take a week or so to get used to your new company's system, templates, QA people (!), etc... to get your production up.

GOod luck and if you have any more questions, hopefully some of the nicer people on this board can help.
Yes too spoiled I think but that is mainly my DH - sm
I spoil them too, but not to the same extent. They are 6 & 8 now (girls). He seems to think he has to buy them something everytime he goes out of town (sometimes this is as much as once a week), so it can add up quick, and they were starting to ask him every night he came home from work "what did you get me", I told him it was way out of hand and had to stop. He had gotten better finally but still not quite where I want him to be. They generally wake themselves up in the morning, but if they are not up yet I wake them up. They pick out their clothes and dress themselves, brush teeth. I get their breakfast though and brush their hair. My 8-y/o does her homework on her own for the most part, I might sit with her while she does it, then check it when she is done. As for chores, nothing on a regular basis, but that is changing shortly, have quite a few things that I do that they can handle just fine. They both clean their rooms (the older one under duress); take turns cleaning their bathroom; and help pick up the LR adn DR (again under duress) when I want to clean/vacuum. We do not do allowances as yet, but are teaching the 8-y/o about $$. She keeps wanting games for the DS Lite, which she paid $60 toward the purchase of to her uncle for her birthday a couple weeks ago; she sells our eggs (have some chickens) and we let her have the $$ which she saves up to get things; granted the egg money won't get her far ($10 a month if that) so I have to keep an eye on how much my DH slips her (which drives me nuts, keep telling him to at least make her do something for the $ and quit just giving it to her). I just don't want my kids thinking they will just be handed $ whenever they want it from dear old dad. Hopefully my visions of the future will not come true.
Spoiled
Thanks everyone for your responses.  I am at fault by spoiling her so much; I really love being with her, I've been knitting sweaters and watching the Wizard of Oz with her and reading, she loves for me to read books to her and play with her, she's an only child and both her mom and my son work and they are young so you know how the priorities are at that age, nobody spends time with her but me so she's thrilled when I see her.  She cries when her Mom comes to get her and climbs on me saying "No" she doesn't want to go.  My son is usually busy playing video games or on the cellphone when she here visiting so she comes to me for attention.  I feel bad, but I really have to work, I've been out of work for 2 years now.  I appreciate all of your feedback.  You guys are great!!
She sounds spoiled
She sounds like a self-centered spoiled employee, IMO.  Does she not take pride in her work?  If not, she is in the wrong field.  I think if a Transcriptionist ever gets to the point the errors don't bother them, they need to consider a profession change.  Yes -- they're small mistakes right now, but how long until she transcribes the wrong medication dosage or something really big?  As I tell my girls, a decimal in the wrong place can mean life or death for a patient if the doctor does not thoroughly check the work and calls in a wrong dosage.
Lazy (spoiled) dictators
They're so used to somebody (like us and/or nurses, etc) picking up after them and waiting on them hand and foot, that they just don't think they need to bother.  When I worked on-site in a hospital, it was easier just to get the chart and write their dis summaries for them, but of course we can't do that from out here so I guess we have to use our mind reading skills.
Yes very spoiled but very responsible and do chores. sm
Most kids are "spoiled" in some way or another. I have two teens who do not ask for any material things. They do not care about name brand clothing or shoes, etc. They are leaders - not followers.

They keep their rooms clean, help out around the house, clean the kitchen, bathrooms, help me do the laundry. Now that school is back in - homework and school work come first. My husband and I spoil our kids on our own just because they are "good kids."
Parents: Are your kids spoiled? sm

For instance, do they do chores that are age appropriate, do their own homework, get themselves up in the morning and ready for the day if they're older than say age 10?  Here's how it works in our house:

6-year-old:  Responsible for cleaning her room, feeding her fish and bunny rabbit and her bathroom each week.  Puts dirty clothes into the hamper and puts up clean clothes except those that have to be hung, which we do since she's not tall enough.  Likes to mop the kitchen floor so we let her do that.  Does her own homework after I make sure she remembers the directions.

15-year-old:  Has to clean her own room and bathroom - alternates the bathroom cleaning with the 6-year-old since they share a bathroom.   If she cooks anything that's not a meal for everyone she has to clean up after herself.    She's now learning to do laundry - my DH always took care of that for her in the past or her mom did, but  I've forced the issue that she can do her own laundry now that she's 15.   Also has to do her own homework without help from us.  For instance, while doing English she commonly asks for the meaning of a word.  I tell her to go to webster.com and look it up or grab the dictionary - which is how we learned as kids.   Also her dad (and bio-mom) used to help do her homework by looking up stuff and writing the answers which she'd re-write but that stopped while we were dating as I got him to realize that he wasn't helping her by doing this and she needed to do her own school work and not whine to get him to help.  She is also required to get herself up and out the door for school in the morning, on time, and knows that if she oversleeps and misses the bus because she's goofing off then she gets no PC or TV privileges for the day.  It only took her 1 time of missing the bus  to learn to get up on time.

What about your household?

Less than 1 yr, spoiled selfish baby vs confirmed bachelor
?
if you live among trashy people, low income people, people w/o goals or direction,
content to just get by, you by default become a part of a group. "people" have decided to group trailer people as trash. that is because there are enough people in that group to earn the title and even if you aren't trash, you are categorized by others. did i think i was trash in lower class neighborhood surrounded by people who drank and fought all weekend? no but i knew i wasn't staying and did not try to pretend that all the fools in the neighborhood were just nice folks who ended up where they were because high horse snobs deemed their neighborhood low class. people for the most part live exactly where they belong because they don't want to educate themselves, they don't mind "trash" around them and they don't want to be bothered trying just a bit hard to extract themselves from that world. they justify everything to themselves i guess saying everyone who doesn't like their lifestyle is a snob and the comedians (Jeff Foxworthy/Chris Rock, etc) who make fun of them are just ill-informed.

As for me, I fought hard to get out and don't even want to look back. It amazes me people stay for generations.
Totally Special, totally HOT! NM

so many people was wishy-washy nowadays...love to see people make
a stand for what they believe in...

it is kind of wierd those statements have to be made in the first place but guess we are an ever-transitioning country and are still young. so many different beliefs yet not much tolerance.

I found your post respectful, and right on as to how you feel. it does not seem that difficult to sift through to read and respond to messages someone might not care for...
Just remember that it is not the people on this board who short changed their people and ONLY after
caught did they (after they were suied) make an effort to look good by sending out these checks. Now, think about this--had they done this many years ago when they short changed everyone, that would have been honest. Does it not bother you that only after they know they are under the gun that they are doing this to try and make themselves look good?

I used to work for MQ and I used to like what I did. I never can say I really liked the people that I worked with, but I really think they had some of the best accounts that I have ever come across in the MT industry. I loved working the major teaching hospitals that I did, but that certainly does not mean that I enjoyed being cheated out of pay.

So chill already. People have been cheated, were lied to, and only AFTER they got caught have they tried to return some of the money they robbed us of (as well as cheated their clients).

We all have reasons not to be happy with this company and you go off on us because we are complaining of things like small refund checks of a penny or a few cents or a few hundred dollars and NO WAY to even check to find out if this is correct?

I am sorry you are unhappy all of us thinking that there is still a dead rat in the cellar, but there is still a dead rat in the cellar and nothing will bring the dead rat back.

I would hold no love for a company that I know willingly cheated the very people who helped THEM make money out of their hard-earned money.

Go take a deep breath and think about that.
My people skills are just fine. I just want to hire people who want to work.
I've not been ugly, I've asked questions, legitimate ones.  Please tell me what is wrong with that.  This site is not just for MTs, it is for QA Editors, Supervisors, Service Owners, there's even sections for Billers, Coders, and Nurses.
rude people? I would take good pay over polite people any day
Besides that they have never been rude to me and I have been here for almost 2 years. What do you consider a bad account?

I know my account is a little tough, but I am used to it. I am tough!
Rude people? I hardly think so. They are some of the nicest people I have ever worked with. sm
Not just management, but QA as well. No one is rude. They are a very understanding staff. There is one account that is hard but all it takes is getting used to it. Once you are used to it, it is no harder than any other ESL account that you would do anyplace else. I have heard all these things about TH from the archives and I have yet to come across rudeness or any kind of thing that I have read about in the archives. I would definitely pursue them if I were you. I think you will be pleasantly surprised.
2 people to do that amount of work, is she nuts? More like 20+ people - nm

Certain people getting raises, certain people not. Guess who is?
Say what you will about unions, the good and the bad. But, one thing they did ensure is a raise, good benefits and that you would have a job in the morning.

Yeah right, OF COURSE! How could there be other people who don't like QA people?
Could only be one.   Hahaha.  Dream on.
I agree, some people will never get it but, then again, what does it say about them as people? Not

.

You are totally right.
You are totally right. It would be nice to be paid hourly for what we are worth but that probably will not happen but it is the Transcriptionist first priority in my eyes to make sure the report is accurate before how much they produce in one particular hour. I would never just put anything because I did not know just because I wanted to make more money that hour that is why it takes experience in this business to make any real income. I know when I started out, I made more money babysitting than I did transcribing but as you gain experience there is less and less you have to look up and then you begin to make a real income.
I totally
Some people just don't know how to leave well enough alone.
This is totally different than having
Many prisons have work release however, they would NEVER allow an inmate to handle the US mail. Sheesh!
totally....

I have been at this only two months and am bored already - its the isolation and the repetitive work I have.  I have a clinic account with a small learning curve, so now my blanks are for the most part garbled words or medications that are unrelated to the specialty area.  I'm still building up speed of course, but now getting distracted/bored/daydreaming is slowing me down.  I count my blessings that the work is not that difficult but its a trade off.

I KWYM about short vs. long. I usually have 1-2min reports and that keeps me going but when I get a 7 minute one, especially if it is the person who talks very softly, pop goes the Diet Coke can!

I thought I would like working alone at home but now realize that I like to be around people.  Funny the things you learn about yourself that fly in the face of what you think you are like.

I think I would be able to do better in house, but what I really want is contact with other human beings and a little more variety in my duties.

Empathizing right there with you.

The first one I get totally
My BF of one year does that. He does things that he knows irritates me because I have told him and then wonders why I get so upset with him. He might pinch me and I say stop about 5 times and it continues and I get totally ticked by then. Then he wonders why I am so angry all the time. Well DUH!
Totally
My worst experiences have been with Mom and Pops MT services...
Not sure totally following? sm

Just in case I'm not understanding, but seems okay to say ALL MTs; probably programmed so they can hit one key and it automatically goes to all MTs entered in this particular email function.  Just like they have a feature where when on vacation you can have email sent "i'm on vaction, will return such and such time.

Using own email, I think we all do?? At least thought so.

would like to know too!

We Must Have Totally -
See, I don't equate "great pay" to "great company." I've made more money at other jobs yet been completely miserable for one reason or another. I've found that I would much rather make a litle less and actually enjoy what I'm doing. While I do consider salary when accepting a position (obviously, otherwise I'd be a total moron), I put a little more weight on benefits, flexibility, communication, my level of interest, and other areas rather than excusively on salary.

I never look on it as a threat to anyone's job security, mine or my colleagues, if I praise an employer and suggest someone apply there. I figure if that person can get past the resume and interview process and ultimately land a job, it's up to me to be at the top of my game to ensure my job security. I expect my colleagues to all be at the top of their games as well.

I am, however, one of those annoying people who politely declines to give any of my friends a job reference unless I know first-hand that they're 110% qualified for the position and share my work ethic and dedication. I'm always fearful of recommending someone and that person, no matter how much I may think of them on a personal level, turns out to be a professional disappointment, then my credibility would be questioned in the eyes of my employer. I guess I'm just as paranoid in this particular area as you are in the area of sharing OP reports or the name of your employer.

That's what keeps life interesting, all of us having different attitudes, perspectives and expectations.

Thanks for the conversation...I always enjoy seeing different viewpoints.

I use ones that go totally over the ear - sm
I cannot stand anything else, and as I have the hearing of an owl I can hear just fine what is going on around me, obviously muted somewhat, but this way I can hear my doctors just fine. I use Maxell NC-II, about $30 at Wal-mart or on-line. First pair lasted a couple years, my next only about 6 months, on my 3rd set now. Very comfy though, though get ear zits now (4-6 a year) and then, guess from the sweat, etc. of having them on a lot, that part sucks.
I totally agree
This is a 10-year-old girl, not a mass murderer. She is in a lot of pain, having suffered a most significant loss, and is trying to reach out, not always in positive ways, but the flowers are wonderful. Where they came from does not matter. PLEASE do not read anything nefarious into her actions.

She needs help, and smiles, and maybe a hug when she is ready.

Fear is a terrible thing, particularly when it turns normally rational folks into masses of paranoid jelly. I despise that we have come to this.
I agree with you totally, thank you!

Not when I'm totally concentrating....sm
But if I get to the end of a report and realize my mind has been wandering, I'll go back and read the report.  It's usually fine, which makes me realize that after 30 years it's rote.  But I wouldn't take a chance.
You are totally freaking me out.
Same name, same lettuce, same wine, same seafood for dinner.  Are we living in a parallel universe, or are you stalking me?  Don't tell me, you grew the lettuce in your garden yourself?
I totally agree with you..
I have been editing work that would just BLOW YOUR MIND. On top of mispelled and misused words, we have bad grammar and punctuation and then typing something different than what the doctor says and if you read it, it doesn't make sense. For example, I cam across this yesterday, "which was done when he was very-very young apparently a ditch is inspected." He actually said "which was done when he was very, very young. Apparently, it did get infected." I come across contractions, etc. This gal actually argued that her scores are always 98%. There were so many redlines on her work, I might as well have scrapped it and typed it myself. I don't know if this is due to schools or not, but when I was a newbie, I don't remember making that bad of mistakes!!!
Thank you, I agree totally
Get over it already.  They cheated you, are cheating  you.  You MUST like it if you stay and continue to be treated that way.  How many other MTs have had a bad job????  Trust me you guys at MQ are NOT the only ones.  There are TONS of jobs out there.  Go get one, that is what the rest of us do.  Go do it.
I so totally agree sm

I posted my resume on MT Stars a couple of years ago and, like you, I was flooded with calls.  The company I selected, I didn't even know existed.  I have been a very happy camper for 2 years, plenty of work, decent pay, great tech support, wonderful people who make you feel like "family."  Best move I ever made.

I think maybe the reason why people keep allowing themselves to be used and abused by companies with sporadic work is the known versus the fear of the unknown factor.  Believe me, the stress of starting a new job is small potatoes compared to never knowing you will have enough in your paycheck to cover the bills!

I totally agree with you!!
I have stuff come up on my screen that just blows me away. Most of it could be fixed if they just read over their work and saw that the sentences do not make sense.
VERY WELL SAID!! Totally agree with you!!
x
wow! totally speechless

OMG! I can totally relate to this.
My stepgrandfather has suddenly started pulling this crap with me.  He's an older man in his early 80s.  He's been in my life for almost 20 years.  Suddenly, he wants to hug me tightly, give me slobbery wet kisses on my mouth, and all sorts of stuff.  He nuzzled me in my ear during a bearhug and asked me if his cologne turned me on.  He's slapped me on the backside, too.  I wonder if it's not some form of dementia or confusion from alcohol or something.  It just makes me so uncomfortable to have ANY man do that to me, with the exception of my husband.  I've been avoiding him for over a year now.  I won't be alone in the same room with him.  I told my Mom and my husband about it.  Everyone just blows it off as a "harmless old man" or "he was just drunk and teasing you".  I know about boundaries and standing up for myself, but it's just really tough when other people think it's "nothing" or that I'm "overreacting".
Totally disagree

Only because I have a neighbor in her 50s, she's tall, still thin, not a wrinkle, so obviously she has kept herself up.  Its not about age, but about wearing the right clothes for the right shape.  She wears tanks, and also long form fitting dresses, very stylish and i've also seen her wear shorts.  I hope to look so good when i'm in my 50s.  Of course if she were out of shape, dying her hair the wrong shade and wore black eye liner, it would be a whole different story.  50 is supposedly the new 30.  But if you have as great of a figure as you did in your 20s as you do in 50s, show a little of it off, we don't die once we reach the age of 40!

I TOTALLY agree with you...
What looks cute and hip on a 20-year-old just looks cheap and classless on a 50-year-old.  I'm 45, so I'm not some young thing poking fun at middle-aged women.  Older women can look very classy and actually YOUNGER if they "dress their age" and by that I don't mean mumurs and bedroom slippers or stretch pants and sack-like tops.  When I dress up I might wear a nice tailored pinstriped suit or something like that.  I do NOT go out in anything from the junior department.  There's a reason for "junior" clothing and it's not size, it's the style of fashion.  To all the women who disagree with you, I'm afraid the notion that older women look young and cute in daisy dukes, a belly shirt, and a navel piercing comes from those who dress that way " thinking" they look hot, not necessarily the opinion of others in general.
