by pressing alt/tab. If your window has become deactivated, that will switch you back into your program and reactivate it. It saves having to reach over for the mouse. This happens to me a lot when my McAfee updates. You can also tell if your window isn't active by looking at the color of the stripe across the top of the screen. When it becomes inactive, it is not as bright as it usually is.
