It is also easy for US to under value ourselves. I am to this point where I am doing QA for a client who is 80% ESLs (IC hourly) and doing it well. Given that the company is small and I am the only QA person, they are very impressed with what I know and how fast I know it. Of course, I transcribe for them too and was instrumental in the company's keeping this account where I now QA. I am invisible, but valued.
I can appreciate this because of all the times for nearly 2 decades in this business I have HAD NO RESPECT and being treated like a typing machine.
I think the key is education of those outside of our profession. We need to approach the AMA. Someone needs to write about what transcription is, without drama or exaggeration, outlining what we know and how we do our jobs...how important we are. If this were done, I know that doctors would start expecting better quality, which I think would build this industry up. We would lose those MTs who don't show up, don't do their minimum lines and don't know their stuff. We would have those of us who do show up, do a wonderful job, make our lines and know their stuff start to be more and more valued and, I believe, paid more. There would be lots more work around even during slim times like now. I think we would be taken more seriously as the professionals WE ARE.
I know...newbies struggle, but perhaps some organization like the AHDI or whomever, would put together a mentoring program for them with certified MTs. We DO need some sort of real certification, but I think the CMT as it currently is, is a sick joke.
Union anyone? I do think about this sometimes.
