You're not a failure for wanting to quit.
If it isn't working for you, for whatever reason, it doesn't make you a failure.

Individuals cannot be failures. Failure is a process, an action. You are a person.

You know, typically it is considered professional to give a working notice of 2 weeks. What about offering a 2-week notice with an altered schedule?

Generally, employees who do not give a 2-week notice are considered ineligible for rehire - an important question when others may call them for past employment information. Usually all that is asked/given are dates of employment, compensation, and whether the employee is eligible for rehire.

No you don't know what you're talking about. The point is
no matter what you call it or how you slice it, the only difference in tax payment between an IC and an employee is the 7.5% self employment taxes and also, less the deductible expenses. I don't know who does your taxes but I bet it isn't you because you don't know the first thing about them. It only costs 7.5% more to be IC status. period.
Point is -- He told you to do it and you're not.
lol
I think we're arguing the same point

You're right, to a point, Sherri
I really WAS very blessed that my first 2 service jobs were under excellent mentors. I have some horror stories from my hospital job after 3 years of service work (yes, I did it backwards, lol!) - the jealousy, the backbiting, the (very wrong) accusations of cherry-picking. Our in-house "quota" was 1000 lines in 8 hours. I could do that and still take a 15-minute break every hour, so I was regularly posting in the 1500's and had once or twice exceeded 2000. The jealous gossip that inspired still confuses me. I tried hard not to talk about my production, but everybody could see everybody else's production for the day, which doctors they had transcribed, how many reports, etc., so there was just no way to avoid being compared to everybody else. The icing on the cake was when I needed FMLA (and then used that up and needed an unpaid personal leave) to care for my dying child. I couldn't leave the job because I was the one carrying the health insurance that covered his treatment, but you better believe I was out of there within 6 months after he passed away!

And I didn't get started talking about a particular supervisor at a particular service (NOT the Q or any of its acquisitions). I was every bit as thankful that she WAS NOT my first supervisor as I WAS thankful that Fran and Carolyn were my first mentors!!!

Anyway, my point to this whole tirade, whether others agree or not, is this: While our profession may be doomed in the long run, we will feel better about ourselves and be able to sleep peacefully at night if we remember to treat others with kindness and respect. We don't have to be everybody's perfect mentor, but at least we can try to not be hurtful, and at least we can find a few to mentor that we are hopeful will succeed.
Good point! You're funny! :-) (sm)
She is a mess, however, my best girlfriend heard that she just signed a contract for 3, count 'em, THREE more years. How can this be?? Simon will make this his last year unless they offer him another mint to stay. I can't imagine.
You're still missing the point. She needs to hear ALL sides.
Like I said somewhere way down below somewhere, many of us have done it successfully, but TIMES HAVE CHANGED. She needs to hear ALL sides, and she needs to know what she will be up against if she decides to pursue MT training.

I fully support stay-at-home moms. I was one myself. Still at home most of the time with pre-teens and a college student. I'm thankful every day that I did not have to put them in daycare. I applaude those who make that decision and make it work. My kids are well adjusted, secure, and all-around good kids. I will never regret my decision to go to school to be an MT so I could "work from home."

BUT IT DOESN'T WORK WELL FOR EVERYONE. The OP needs to hear the good along with the not-so-good.

As far as MT being an "at-home career," I've been an at-home MT, in-office MT, at-home editor, in-office editor, QA manager, QA consultant, and a college MT instructor. There are many avenues in this career; not all of them are at home, and there are advantages and disadvantages to all situations. I've seen it from a lot of different perspectives. My personal experience with MT has been great. But I've seen (and have personally known) many whose experiences weren't so grand. I've also had students who were talented, motivated and truly gifted for the profession of MT who spent thousands upon thousands of dollars, not to mention the hours of work, to earn a certificate with the hopes of working from home immediately after graduation so they could stay at home with their young kids who were suddenly faced with the harsh reality that the jobs were going to India, and most, if not all, MTSOs require 2 years of experience and won't even consider a new grad. As I stated previously, there ARE exceptions to this, but there are FEW exceptions. That's a fact that needs no debate. Granted, motivation, hard work and perseverance do pay off, and the motivation to stay at home with one's baby is the strongest motivation I can think of.

But still--again--stick to the original question and lighten up on those who don't see the world as you see it. There are many, many perspectives and she will benefit from hearing all of them.
Can't argue with that!
.
Yep, can't argue with that.
.
Not to argue, but have YOU ever been thru this?

Do you know how many times battered woman go to the police for help, only to be told that there's nothing that can be done? That no charges will be filed, because there's no proof? Or the husband gets charged with something but the DA pleads it down to Disturbing the Peace because there's no proof?

She's lived in this situation for far too long now... and unfortunately, the truth is that she just keeps getting smacked around anyway... trust me, if you've been there, you would know what I'm talking about... you take it and take it and take it and there's no end in sight... but at least this way she would know that it was the last and final time... I told you my opinion wouldn't be popular.. but the truth is, she's probably not going to leave just because any of us tell her to... but at least if she formulates a plan like I suggested, it gives her a goal to work toward, it makes it real for her, and she will probably follow thru... otherwise, it's just too easy to stay in the cycle of abuse and forgiveness... trust me on that one... you sit there and think to yourself that you're going to leave because you know you have to... but then you just never do... because no matter how rough it is, at least it's familiar... and getting out really takes a lot of courage to break the cycle.... at least if she has a plan, then she has a goal and a set date to have it be over... with no more excuses or saying "well maybe he'll change" or giving it one last chance... at the end of the month, his chances are over...

we argue all the time
My husband says I don't spend enough time with my family even though I stay home during the day with my kids while he is at work.  When he has something in the evening, I get stressed because I have to work while he is off with friends and I'm trying to take care of the kids.  I get my work around 6:30 p.m.  He doesn't want me to stay up all night doing it to turn around by noon.  What is a girl to do?
Go ahead, argue with me on how you all think

Lets see the moral ethics flow.

Paying below poverty... minimum wage is POVERTY, yet, below that.. what a joke.

Because I'm just being me, I gotta argue ya ;)

Nuthin' personal... I'm only going on what AAMT BOS tells me to do, because I'm a tool.  Page 209 of 2005 AAMT BOS, 2-cm mass, 4-cm lesion, 4-1/4-inch scar, .38-caliber pistol, et cetera.

for that matter, you could also argue what are any of us needed for...
why have people do anything.

being that I love this profession, I am just disappointed to be in it at this time of transition. if there was even hope the MT can be transitioned to stay in the field it would be great, but so far all I hear are complaints about money, we cost too much, nurses cost too much, everyone costs too much.

personally, although automation is inevitable (being the huge Isaac Asimov fan that I am) robots WILL be taking over manual labor some day, computers will think for us, and again the quote comes to mind 'how will man learn to survive his own insignificance.'

in theory, the electronic chart with chips in our brains should work perfectly; however, have you ever known your PC to work perfectly like say, when there is a storm, or computer hackers take over, or, I could go on...

the transition period is probably where the worst mistakes will happen...

I do agree with you, in theory, anway.
Not to mention, QA does not get pain to argue with MTs
The QA people have a specific job to do also.  They do not get paid to exchange e mails with the MTs (imagine how much time that would waste), or to have an ongoing debate with them as mentioned in previous post.  You would not want to do that much typing on your job and not get paid for it.  They have a TAT to meet just like we do.  Mind you, I am not taking up for you QA guys that nitpick at hyphens and punctuation at all, even though you say that's your job.  I would say that in more than 30 years, I have only had 2-3 who could/would spend the time to help me become a better MT without unnecessary critism.  Yes, I agree, there should be more editors like the one posting here.  MTs should think outside the box here and use a decent QA person when you find one as a valuable tool at your disposal.
Do not worry the posters below - some people will argue about ANYthing!
Hope your party is a great success! :-)
I see folks churn out crap that I cannot argue for humans

I'm repeating what my accountant told me. Go argue w/him I guess.

He said find out what you need to make and then multiply that x 3.

I paid at least 30% tax last year, or more.  even with my piddly deductions.

I agree, too. I'm just so tired of it all, don't have the energy left to argue with 'em any
x
I didn't apply, so that's a moot point. The point I was making is that
she's ranting here about something that doesn't even pertain to most of us. You can't come to a MT message board railing at MTs without getting a response. That's why it's not called MTSOstars. Also, it's unprofessional of a business owner to let her emotions overrule her common sense. As for the newbies, they'll learn. We were all newbies at one time or another. None of us was born perfect, not even the MTSO.
You missed my point. My point wasn't perks but prestige...nm
nm
The point wasn't that it was copyrighted. The point the poster tried to make
:(
That's not my point. My point is previous owner hired
nm
Are you wanting to know what it says?
x
That is not at all what I was wanting!!!
I came here for honest advice...positive and negative. I got that...and I am very glad for both views. Now it is just up to me to decide.

I have never expected to just graduate and make BIG money....I have NEVER said that or thought that. It is very obvious that most MT's don't get rich. Like I have already said...I am looking to supplement my husbands income....and I came here to ask all of you your opinions on the business....good and bad. That is all.

And thanks to everyone for that!!!!! I am sorry that a lot of you are getting discouraged about the MT business...It is worrying me too! Which is why I may not even spend the money to go to school. I have a lot of time to think about it....and that is what I will do!!!!!
Why are they wanting you to take it??
Will it mean an increase in your pay? If not, I would not waste my money. I was a CMT for 15 years (15 years ago). In the part of the country I lived then, it made a difference -- we were paid another 1 cpl, but once I moved back to the south central part of the US, nobody cared.
wanting to know more about Transcend.

I have been curious about them as well because I have thought of applying to work for them.  I am with a company now but feel I need to make a change for the better.  It is a small company and I feel I need to be somewhere else.  I just was not sure about the company.  I would welcome any input on this matter

Not wanting to start a war but sm
it just really gets old reading the same ole, same ole about SS.   As far as I'm personally concerned, there are usually 2 sides to every story.  If  I happened to be in SS's shoes,  I believe I'd be talking to a lawyer about something called "slander" and I'd be telling some folks to put up the proof or shut up.  Nope, I don't work for SS, never have and probably never will.  If I happened to be in the market for a new job, I believe I would give them a try just to see if they're really that bad.  If they were......well, I'd move right along.
wanting to go digital

Pay not that good.  I have 20 years' experience in acute care, can do ESLs and was only offered 8 cpl.
Just wanting to know if any IT users

would care to share tips on getting started with Instant Text, especially the best way to go about customizing the glossaries . . . just received my IT and I'm anxious to get going, but it does seem that there is a learning curve and takes some getting used to.

Thanks to all!

Re: wanting to work MT
Check w/ Diskriter. They have at least one account for a hospital in Florida. I have been w/ them for 1 1/2 years, plenty of work and OT. Hired in as hospital employee.
wanting to go digital

I have had my own transcription service for several years now.  All of my doctors are local and everything is dictated on microcassettes.  I am looking into going digital and I have heard that there are phone in services that you can go through for a charge every month.  Does anyone know who would be a good service to use or how this works?  If anyone has any info on this I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!

I have been wanting to rant too
When they start talking before the system is recording. Is it REALLY so difficult to turn it on BEFORE you talk?
Not wanting to work
I know this happens at every company, but why is it that when the work is there, nobody wants to get it done but when work is slow, they are always the first to complain? Do they not realize that by letting it be late that they are harming the company and could eventually lose their jobs? Or is it just Spring Fever? Anyone else going through this at the moment?
wanting to go digital
Please send me information on how to go digital.

re wanting experienced MT to answer q's
go ahead and e/m me if you want.  I've been at this since 1975; will help you if i can.
Most companies are wanting a Sunday through
Thursday schedule, Tuesday through Saturday, so you would still be working 5 days, but would always be working 1 w/e day.  If you just rotate weekends it depends on the company what days you would have off during the week, whether they would dictate the days you took off or you would be able to choose.
Wanting psych work
Looking for psych work.  Will work any hours or days.
I had lots of people wanting her, just most

not good homes based on what I required.  Tried the lab rescure, but everyone had all they could take and they would help me find her a home, I just had to keep her until then and I just didn't want to get too attached.   All the other various rescue groups had reached their limits too and taking her to the pound wasn't an option.  Even though I felt she would be adopted quickly because she was so sweet, there is absolutely zero screening and anyone that fills out the paperwork and pays the $$ can get a pet.  When we adopted the cats we were fostering there was a grandmother in there dragging her grandson by his upper arm and she balled her fist and threatened to punch him in the face.  This was not a home I would want my lab to go to.

I'm not 100% comfortable with the family she went to, but I told them if it didn't work out we wanted her back.

We are going to build a dog lot and dog house in the event we have another stray.

wanting to start using laptop
Hi all! I was wondering if anyone could help me out here. I'm attempted to use a laptop this weekend to work and be away from the house, but it would not recognize the wav files. It has Windows XP office, all the same stuff my home computer has on it, but I cannot figure out why it is not working. Any ideas? Thanks!
Are you wanting to use normal headphones
With a dictaphone?

I got an adapter for about 20 bucks from Executive Communication Systems. They have an ebay store, here's a link to an auction for the adapter.

If they are newbies wanting to get into the field

they really haven't a clue.  I have a major case of burnout, but I have also been doing this for 20 years.  I haven't had a raise in 5 years.   It isn't that I can't do the work, I can do whatever is thrown my way, but I certainly don't enjoy it anymore.  My options are just limited right now because I have to be at home, but I sure am exploring my options.

Everyone's situation is different.  Some may be having to take care of sick/elderly parents or have a child with special needs who requires lots of care, etc.  All these things suck up your energy, but you still need a paycheck.  Someone who has children in school all day or has grown children and doesn't have any of the other issues above can focus on their job, get it done and not have to deal with it until tomorrow.

You can't know what someone else's situation is and it isn't fair to say they can't do the job.

That depends on why you are wanting to be a transcriptionist. sm
If you are looking for a lucrative field and an easy lifestyle, don't do it. Transcription is the hardest job I have ever had, and I've had several. I could teach if I wanted to. I choose this.

You can make a living as an MT. A good MT can still make $20-30 K a year without killing herself, but she has to work, and it takes several years training after school to reach this. I don't think that will change in the near future. Unless the US completely changes its medical policies and facility standards, I don't think transcription will be eliminated, at least for many years. You have much more freedom in your life as far as scheduling, etc. If you have children, that's worth a lot. If you would rather not be around people all the time, that's a plus.

However, if you need benefits, raises, PTO, and job security, you might want to look into another field, such as PT, radiology tech, etc. JMO
She is wanting to take a transcription test without
having to log into a company site (in which case she will be graded).  She just wants practice.
Wanting PT QA work, is it worth it?
I'm currently a FT MT (many years now) and getting very bored with the work. It's so bad now that I'm finding myself constantly distracted (perhaps too willingly) thus not producing enough lines.  I'm more than capable...just bored.  I was wondering if doing QA PT would be worth it, on top of my MT work?  I just need something to do other than MT work to break up the monotony.  I've done QA work before but that was quite a while ago and don't know what the pay standards are anymore.
Sadly, while you are not wanting to spread the name...

...Some other unsuspecting MT is signing a contract with these folks.

Believe me, I felt the SAME exact way as you back when I was fooled by D&L.  I gave them the benefit of the doubt for over a month, and actually believed payment would be sent to me.  I didn't talk badly about them, well not until PA Dept of Labor decided there was nothing they could do for me as an IC.  Here it is, 1 year later, and I still haven't been paid...either have 20+ others who were all just suddenly *let go.*

The only loyalty you should ever have in this business is to yourself, your pocket and to a fellow struggling MT.  Don't be scared to let others know the name of a company to avoid.

Good luck dealing with PA courts/magistrates/Dept of Labor, etc.  I hope you get your pay.
