Yes she did play the single mother card. Reread the last line of her post... (sm)

the one that says, "She has really messed things up for this single mother."
Now substitute the phrase "single mother" for "black person", so the sentence would read: "She has really messed things up for this black person."
Now tell me you wouldn't believe somebody was playing the race card if they wrote that? It's the same with the "single mother" crap. The difference is that a person can't choose what race they belong to, but a single mother DOES have a choice. They can choose to:
A) Keep their legs closed.
B) Use multiple forms of birth control simultaneously to avoid getting pregnant.
C) Get sterilized.
D) Be more selective about who they sleep with.
or
E) All of the above.
So, it's not a matter of interpretation; she was playing the "single mother card" the same way some people get accused of playing the "race card". A pity party is a pity party, no matter who it's coming from.

SINGLE MOTHER & NEW WAHMT
I am 46 and the single mother of a young son. I worked for the last five years at one of the premier universities in Chicago as a secretary to two urologic surgeons. I resigned from my job almost two months ago, and beginning in one week, I will start my first independent contractor MT position. My little boy will begin first grade the day after Labor day, so this will free me up to type for about five to six hours each day. Does anyone have any advice for me on the MT home alone experience. This is going to be a major adjustment for me. Phyllis
she's a single mother! That shouldn't matter! nm

You should reread her post . . .
I happened to notice that she did not post that until after my youngest was home (a clue), and the content of her post suggests that she was pretty happy that things went well for her kids on their first day . . . one down, 179 to go (what do you think?)
Please reread the post above yours.
I think you might have misunderstood what the poster was saying. Her post and your post are apples and oranges.
As a former recruiter, I might waive experience (not testing) from two of the big three, after talking to the owner. Depended on the QA situation at the time, as every "newbie" needs more attention, regardless of school.
I just reread your post
and wanted to add that I did sign papers, I filled out papers, I included everything I wanted in the settlement, and the issue is the VIN# not being included, and that's what I have to have in order to get his name off the title. The crook just didn't give me copies of stuff at that moment and said he would be sending me out copies, which he never did. After the hearing (since I've never been through a divorce), I assumed I wouldn't get any paperwork right at that moment and thought, again, it would be sent out to me, but it wasn't. Hope that makes more sense.
You need to reread the post. I didn't say
all the freebies were scams.
Just bought this computer so you never know if it is the ethernet card or mother board or Comcast.
I had this on another computer and it was the modem that time.
New. Wanted to put in a better card to support a game my 17yo DD wanted to play.

Well, if its about the post below where the single mom got shafted on a job,
yes, its a darn shame. Horrible thing to happen. But, she is a single mom and all the more reason NEXT time to be darn sure that doesn't happen again. Something must have gone wrong with the typing part of the test - I think I read that? yes, they said she didn't pass the test, so while the whole thing is a huge mess and a huge shame, the company also shouldn't be obligated to hire her just because she's a single mom. Though I don't think the original poster was saying that either - it just got twisted into that by some of our usual sweeties! And as has been said, on the bright side, the company sounds like a screwed-up mess, so she is better off. Praying she gets her old job back. I've gone back with my tail between my legs MANY a time...I'm sure lots of us have, right?
Who's Laurie? The single mom post was mine
HI
MY posts were sarcasm. Don't blame me for every single post.
Nobody even knows what you're talking about with hatred. I don't see any hateful posts here.
I would sue and post their names on every single board on the Internet.

I always reread
I never send in a report without relistening to it. I first type all the dictations at once and then speed up the dictation between 200% to 250% and go over everything. I leave everything to the proofreading, checking up words, referring physicians, correcting mistakes etc., unless the doctor is really slow and then I correct my mistakes as I go along, but still proofread.
Since quick typing is so essential, I don't want to stop typing in middle to check things up and I found mistakes so many times (even small things like an extra comma, a missing letter, he/she, etc.) that I don't feel I can send it without proofreading.
I'm not the OP -- better reread
I simply googled it the same as you did and the same as the OP did.
If you would reread you would see
I said I worked more than 1 job always through my years when I had children to raise. I always worked and kept at least TWO jobs, sometimes more. I would have fell on hard times IF I had not been willing to get out and find jobS. People sitting waiting are putting themselves behind the 8 ball. I never wanted to have less, always be comfortable and that is what I strived for.
I reread each report.
x
You might reread it, too. I'm just sayin'. nm

Went back and reread and it is
in YEAR you reach full retirement $1 for every $3 you earn. In the years BEFORE full retirement age, then $1 for every $2 you earn. You are really penalized for taking retirement in the years leading up to your full retirement age. Before FRA 1 out of 2 and year of FRA 1 out of 3. All that mess cuts out completely when you reach your full retirement age- still working, nothing to pay back to the feds.
After 18 yrs, I proofread as I go.. Nobody should sit and reread every word when on production.

Thank you for this post. I am weary of defending this line
I'm suddenly a "mom" again at the age of 45 when my daughter got tired of playing mommy and I don't know where she is now. I was one month in with a new company, who has been very supportive of what I'm doing, but it is a lot different since I didn't have 9 months to prepare for it. I'm getting into a routine of working before she gets up, when she naps and at night she does get her Barney and other videos where she is actually learning things BUT, I am losing sleep, I don't feel comfortable letting the TV babysit and I don't have a support network. I'm single, no family.
She will start in a mother's day out program 3 days a week next week and I think I can put together a reasonable schedule until August when she can go 5 days a week, 5 hours a day.
I don't feel guilty for my decision and don't feel "strangers" at daycare will be giving kisses that I should be giving. Why is it that in Europe several generations of a family raise the new ones and everyone in the villages know everyone and help out but not here in the US and then people demean those who use daycare. The support network is different and lacking in this country.
Sorry, I'm weary...going to bed if I can get princess to agree...
not all companies post clearly .. how many put their line rate in the ads?
I really hate it when I answer a blind ad and afterwards I have to tell the person that they are not offering enough compensation for me to work on their account.
If they need weekend coverage, maybe that should be handled by a weekend-only IC. And if the MTSO has to hire 3 MTs to jump in the work pool (usually with a prn hanging in the eves) on Saturday and clean it up, then the work gets done. The M-F gals are happy, and the weekend MT looking for extra work (because some accounts don't have weekend work - especially clinic accounts) on the weekend is happy, too.
I work the weekend sometimes, both days. But I typically steer completely away from account ads that have the shifts delineated Tues-Sat 1st, 2nd, or 3rd shift.
This is a labor-management issue that needs to be worked out amicably. Too many times MTSOs are bad-mouthing ICs and ICs/SEs/Es are bad-mouthing MTSOs. We aren't at odds. The MT is benefitted by hitting TATs with hopefully job security, and surely we all understand that we are all together on contract performance. This is supposed to be a symbiotic relationship and if you do get an MT who flakes, then have an extra to cover it. Management shouldn't browbeat the MTs who are dependable.
The post did not say gross line, that's why everyone was so upset about it.

Take a few on-line tests. Some companies post
a link in their ads about where to go to test. You'll get a feel then about how good your education are. You'll certainly have blanks and you'll probably get a bad dictator or an ESL, which is the norm these days, but it will still give you a sense of things. I've had nearly 20 years' experience I still have an occasional blank and I have to spend some time researching a new drug, equipment, or procedure at least a couple of times a month, so you never stop learning.
You'll find when you start out you keep your reference books piled up beside you and Google is your best friend. You'll probably look something up twice for every report and then you'll only to have look something up twice a day, etc. The thing to do is make lists when you have a new word/drug so that you have it posted somewhere where it is handy if it should come up again and you don't spend a lot of time looking it up.
You also need to have a good reference library. I know some only use google, but at least 1/4 of what is on goggle is incorrect and unreliable, and you need the proper tools for the job. A community college course, if taken in person and not on-line, can be completed in less time than a course that is all on-line/correspondance generally.
Thanks for the wish...I am getting ready to post my resume in a few what should I ask for per line?
I opened the resume link here and realized I don't have a clue as to what a new MT should ask for per line...got any suggestion?
Do the majority of MTs reread or relisten to all the reports you do and how much time does this take
or I suppose rather which is more effective and takes less time. Do you do this for every report you do. Do the big nationals require this. I suppose it depends on your QA score if you need to do this.
Need MT section on this board to post line rates sm
and what company to help turn things around in this industry, meaning, the 4,5,6,7,8 9 etc per line which is grossly under paying if one takes the time to figure, how many lines, how many lines per hour, per minute, per second to make HOW MUCH PER HOUR. This is the key, how much per hour you make.
With a list of where to refer to, it helps curb this slave labor mentality.
THE MTs NEED A SECTION ON THIS BOARD to list going rates so the industry becomes more competitive and not at our expense with all this " supply 3 phones, supply long distance TO THEM. BUY THIS AND PROVIDE THIS TO THEIR COMPANY. Buy this license, this software.
My contribution: As taken from their ads the last month (looking back) at least 10/ln

Do any of you find you miss a word sometimes if you dont reread your transcription. I wonder what
causes that and how to avoid it without totally going over every report.

Has anyone disconnected the internal sound card and replace with another sound card?
I am having problems with my sound on one of my computers. Several different ExText program have been on it so I don't think it is the program and the sound is just now as clear as on my other computer. Has anyone switched (disconnected the internal sound care and replaced) to a new sound card? Did it make a difference.
Everyone on this board is so knowledgeable, I really appreciate you. You have helped me many times.
I find you do tend to skip maybe a word sometimes when you dont reread. I guess
your brain doesnt keep up or something. I dont know what causes that.
A gross line is anything on a line is a line. A line set at 65 characters means it sm
has 1-inch margins on each side. The maximum number of characters on that line would be 65 and that includes spaces. If there is 1 character on that line it is a line.
A standard 65-character line usually consists of 65 characters with spaces unless, of course, the employer does not pay for spaces and then it would be 65-characters without spaces.
No credit card is a good credit card.
Just kidding. I'd suggest not using credit cards to pay debts. It'll only dig you in deeper. Look into a signature loan or putting a lien against a vehicle or house. Lower interest rate, pay off sooner.
Anything on the line makes up a line even if just one letter or number. Every line of print is a
s
Gross line = each line on page counts as a line, even if it's only 1 word. nm
x
Gross line means anything on a line is counted as a line.
You can get an idea in the difference using documents you have already created, assuming you're working in Word. Simply open a document and check the properties. Click on the statistics tab and you will see the number of lines as well as characters with and without spaces. If you're currently getting paid by the line and a line is 65-characters with spaces, do the math and see how that number of lines compares with the number of lines in your stats.
One thing to keep in mind: if you have a blank line between paragraphs, instead of hitting the enter key twice, format your document to give the appearance of blank lines between paragraphs.
I am a single mom
of 2 beautiful girls, 10 and 8. I support myself. I do not make my ex pay child support and he sees his children whenever he wants. It is possible to be a single mother in this world and not be bitter and angry. I have it better than most divorced single parents, but I have worked hard to get it this way. I guess my point is that whatever the situation, it can be changed to achieve the desired outcome. Everything takes time, love, and a lot of hard work, and being 30 years old and having gotten where I am today, I am quite proud to be a single mom.
Just a PS - and I'm single
no kids, never married. You all should start with the AAMT, which from what I can see, is nothing but a huge joke.
single mom
I raised 2 kids, boy and girl on my own. Something you might want to think about is sharing babysitting services. If you only type in the evening, possibly you would keep someones children during the day (save them money) and then they could keep your children in the evenings so you could work (or vice versa). There are ways around the childcare issue. You just have to use your imagination. If you are part of a church and your church has a church bulletin board, advertise through your church for "adoptive grandparents", an older woman or couple that need the interaction and would be willing to help you out and in turn you could possible cook dinner them them during the week or even clean their house, etc. The barter system is a great tool that people forget about.
Not OP, but every single job I have had
I needed to be trained for multiple reasons. Are you an MT? I doubt it because all MTs know you need training for the company's software, acct specs, how they do things in general. It does not matter how much exp a person has, you will always need to be trained on a new job regardless.

i raised by daughter all by meself (she is now 22)doing medical transcription. even with an infant it works for you really well. you child will adapt and entertain themself, but you can take breaks all the time and spend time with them. i thought it was the perfect situation, but i would suggest working during the day.
unfortunately, i went for a second marriage and that didn't work either and i was separated when she was 10 months so i'm doing all over again, but you can make this work really well for you.
i now have my own business and call all the shots working for eight doctors and I get to spend so much time with my daughter.
i love it.
keep working hard
single mom MT
Let me say first I have been in your shoes. I am still a single mom and still an MT. IT's been a struggle. When I divorced my boys were 9 months and 5 years. I made the same decision as you are to saty at home and work. I did eventually get daycare for my younger child when my older son started 1st grade and this helped to have 6 hours uninterrupted. The daycare costs can be covered by assitance. I know you don't want to go on government support - but sometimes we have to bite the bullet. They will help you with medical insurance and food etc. It doesn't have to be forever -- just while you are learning the ropes at work as an MT and gaining speed. Theh childcare I got was in my own neighborhood - a license daycare provider. I didn't want to use a center as I like the smaller home environment. I used to run a family daycare myself when I was married. I asked for a listing from Welfare office of licensed providers and there were 3 or 4 in my smaller city -- one only 5 blocks away. My older son eventually went there after shool - she picked him up.. so I could work a full 8 hour shift. We did this until my younger son was ready to go to school. Now I just work while they are in school. They are 15 and 10. I also work in the evening after dinner if needed after homework and they are older and know it's Mom's work time. It can be done. It's a challenge still for me because my 10 yo has a mild form of autism and on days that there is no school etc it can be a challenge. Then, I try to get a grandparent or Dad to take him for a few hours. I work as an IC now to have flexible hours....
