You're right, you do not rehash the past, but just are aware that you are the way you are at no fault of your own. You just rebuild yourself from the bottom up, step by step. It is supposed to open up good or positive neuropathways in the brain, and the old pathways, the negative ones where we down ourselves constantly are supposed to shrivel up and die out, over time. Its a whole physiolgical process, since it has been proven we use different parts of our brain for different things, and those are the ones that are dominant, the ones we use the most. So if we were abused in the past, put down, especially at a young age, we tell ourselves over and over we are no good, so that dominates, and over time it becomes dominant. Cognitive therapy teaches us the opposite, positive reinforcements, soon that is supposed to dominate.
I have been doing it for two months and let me tell you its changed my life. My automatic thinking is now on the positive side, I do not think the worst of everyone, and my knee jerk reaction is not to feel negative anymore. Its like my brain is slowly being cleaned out or holes are being filled in. Its hard to explain, but ive never felt so good. With this, you can really see the negativity in others too, reminding of you of how far youve come. If you can't afford gas or therapy, buy tapes, they are just as effective. Good luck!
