....and is WAS NOT fun.  I feel for you, I really do.

Mine was in 1992, and I fractured/dislocated mine about an hour into our vacation at Myrtle Beach when I misstepped out of our motel room door.  I spent some time in the emergency department at the hospital there, stayed overnight in the motel, then drove the nearly 6 hours back to Atlanta where my parents met us and picked up the kids and I saw a doctor who practiced at the hospital I transcribed for.  A week later, they did an ORIF when the swelling had a chance to go down a little.  That week was really hard because I was in a splint and I could feel my bones rubbing back and forth on each other - like I said, NOT FUN.

Anyway, I did end up in a cast from just above my toes to just below my knee, and I was out of work for three weeks total.  I worked at home, and when I went back to transcribing. I was fortunate to have broken my left ankle and I used my pedal with my right.  I kept my casted ankle propped up on a stool, if I remember correctly, that fit up under my desk.  It hurt terribly, and I had to take very frequent breaks.  It also hurt very bad at night.  It hurt when I walked with a walker or with crutches - just holding it up and having it hang there hurt like everything.  To tell you the truth, this was the worst pain I have ever had.  Then when I had to start bearing weight on it, it hurt all over again.

However, we were so thankful for 2 things:  We did have the cash that we had saved for vacation so it was not just devastating that I couldn't make as much money as we were accustomed to, and I broke the only extremity that I did not need in order to do my job.  God is so good.

I hope you do not have as much pain as I did.  Mine was a very bad break.  It was hard to work but not impossible.  It was hard to sleep, too.  Be sure and take your pain and sleeping medications as you need them --that's what they are for. Also be sure to elevate it like you are supposed to if you possibly can. Good luck with this - I'll be thinking about you!
