Sometimes, not often, but sometimes I actually feel sorry for these doctors who seem to have no leadership with regards to how to do dictation in a way that would make our jobs easier. It is obvious to me when they are clueless as to the fact that we are not familiar with local geography, or the names of the local doctors, for instance. Maybe if they understood, they would be more precise. Also, maybe they are totally clueless as to the effects on the dictation when they are yawning, chewing, coughing directly into the mic, competing with background noise, etc. If only they had some direction... I really do believe all these problems are the fault of the HIM directors and office managers. They could even provide a clear-speaking dictation assistant for those dictators who are so heavy ESL that blanks are inevitable. No, we are expected to read their minds and perform like perfect machines. No breaks for us. Yet, when one of us leaves out a comma or something like that, they have no trouble contacting our managers!!
Of course, there are exceptions. Those are the good accounts. I'm sure they exist somewhere; I just haven't found one yet.
