Wouldn't that make spaces after ALL periods like p.o. and b.i.d. etc?

Not familiar with this, so wanted to ask. Sounds like a great idea, I will check into it more though!

My ASR accounts do 1 space after the periods, though the acct specifics want 2 spaces. sm
So does the company set up the VR specifics to include 1 space after the periods so they can pay just a little less? Does anyone take the time to put the extra spaces in, or do you just try to whip through the report just to keep going! Do the spaces after punctuation really amount to big difference in my pay? Just curious as to how all of you handle this situation. Let me know!
I make 9 w/o spaces but I get every character - sm
on the page, regardless if I typed it or not, plus a cover page that is macro'd. However w/o the spaces I'd say I am out an average of $200 a month. Since you will not get headers/footers, it will probably be a little more. I try to template up as much as I can but only a handful of docs actually say the same thing every time. I figured it out once and I think the 9 w/o spaces equaled 7.75 with spaces. I get fairly regular raises though and with any luck get bumped up to .10 in the Spring (at least I am going to ask for it). You don't say how much experience you have, but if you do not have much I would go for it. I have been looking on an off for a while for a new job but am very limited as I have dialup (no DSL here, and most companies don't want satellite), so I am between a rock and a hard place. Any jobs I do find with dialup offer .07 cpl, unless it is real easy work I don't want to go that low. Make a list of pros and cons and go from there.
I wouldn't have it any other way! I make my own. nm

Wouldn't it make sense to just ask QA
to explain their decision to you? In my experience, every single time an MT has a hissy fit over something, it was their mistake all along. How can you just assume QA is wrong? If you write and ask politely, you will have all the proof you need either way - if you were right, you have proof of your challenge of it, and if you are wrong, you may learn something new! And you must not have even contacted QA, as otherwise you wouldn't have to ask your question at all!
Wouldn't make sense to me.
You'd have to go to school and try to learn a gazillion things that you perhaps aren't able to focus on because you have a cool new baby. So spend 9 months and $4000 on the education ... you might as well have just stayed home and enjoyed your baby and saved the child care, right?
why you would be in the position to make the changes looking at the big picture wouldn't you?
I can only see things from my point of view but you are in contact with those who probably want answers as to why things are not turned around on a timely basis and perhaps when they ask you, you could tell them about morale issues, etc.
Wouldn't it make more sense for the company
to hire someone for that shift, and that person could be a "stat" person in addition to typing a regular account? Nah, I guess that would be just too simple!

My line including spaces is 65 characters. I've heard that not counting spaces
takes away over 35% of your line count. I believe it too because you have at least 15 or so spaces on each line that you type. Use your first sentence up top as an example; you had 77 char and 21 spaces - in that line that would be a little less than 30% of your characters that you didn't get paid for. I don't think it's worth it and wouldn't want to work without getting credit for my spaces.
Definitely use the periods.

Need quick answer please...should eg have periods or not?

we aren't even putting periods after...
Dr. or M.D. they have just given up on that here. i think the use of a period after dr is justified. we get paid hourly so it doesn't matter for us.
I still use 2. It looks better and doesnt get confused with abbr. periods.
I wouldnt change to 1 unless the AAMT Book of Style rules on it and I dont believe they have. I could be wrong on that. If anyone knows, please let me know.
Another thing I have noticed people doing is not putting a comma before the and in a list. I was always taught to use the comma but some people dont.
Me too, periods through 5 months. I know, TOTALLY ABNORMAL! nm

It wouldn't load with my Office. Somehow it wouldn't "read" my 2003 Basic, although sm
technical couldn't find anything wrong with my software. They really tried hard. I see so many people that like Escription, I'm sorry not to be able to use it. Hopefully I can get Office Pro on my next machine, and maybe use it then. I could upgrade, but I'm still not sure it would work.
I have frequent headaches, too. My coincide with my periods. Nothing OTC helps. SM
Any suggestions for me?
There are exceptions when Word won't cap after periods, like in numbers or after colons.

No flame--commas & periods go inside quotation marks--ALWAYS.
"right", they get "left". Hate to see a good MT not do this correctly.
slow periods, seek alternative extra cash? sm
Docs, like us, have busy family lives. I found that after Hannukah and Christmas (or sometimes with a break from family stuff) they "catch up" on dictation. Hopefully, this is what still happens. I have a son who is a professional and he likes to go in on Christmas Eve morning because it's so "slow" that he can get a lot of paperwork done. So hang in. Another aspect of today's world is that docs are carrying laptops now as is my family PCP and they are all doing their own notes. I think it's a "wait and see" thing, the world is changing and hopefully there is a survival tool for us somewhere. We are all being replaced by technology, sadly. Only time will tell. I was told several years ago that I should go into "scoping" which is kind of like editing, etc., you go into public stenographers machine gibberish and make sense out of it, kind of like making sense out of what comes back from India. I was offered this but refused to clean up someone else's "mess." Everyone should be thinking of alternative ways to get by, it's never easy. It's sad, as I have put a lot of time and $$$ into a profession that doesn't appreciate my knowledge. From your posts, Blondie, you have a good heart. I hope things get better for you. Try to have a happy holiday. How did you make out with those dogs you took in? Did the owner take them back or at least pay you? This may be an alternative few extra bucks for you. You seem to be an animal lover and a caring person.I don't live near you, but I would rather leave my Golden with you than some kennels around here. Thus, I do not go away if I can't take my dog. Hope things pick up for you work-wise.
Get out the timer. You'll have to force yourself to work uninterrupted for periods of time.
Just keep in mind that you WANT the money. Best of luck!

without spaces compared to with spaces
10 cpl without spaces equals to how many cpl with spaces?
Spaces versus no spaces....
Can someone tell me how big of a difference it makes if a company pays for spaces versus no spaces. I have only every been paid without spaces. I have been offered a position that pays for spaces, but the cpl is less than I am making now. I am not sure if getting paid for spaces will make up for the pay cut. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Wouldn't that mean that you simply wouldn't have to print out everything?
You spending 3K in gasoline to make 4K plus all that time on the road? That doesn't make sense Pat
How nice that the world revolves around what you make and no one else could possibly make more. sm
Marla in So. California pays 11 cpl for a 55 ccl, Oracle pays 9-1/2 cpl, MDI-MD 11 cpl, JLG 10 cpl for gross line, etc.
Of course, these are rates negotiated and paid to qualified MTs.
DQS no spaces? Are you sure?
Are you sure DQS does not count spaces? When I first started, I took a report and manually counted each and every character, space, return, etc, and found that the lines count I was given for the report matched (rounded up) my manual count. Even now, I copy and past every single report to Word Perfect (which does not count spaces on my version), and DQS always exceeds my Word Perfect character count by a bunch, so I figure I am not being cheated. Take a medium size report, print it, and try counting manually and see what you think.
I know they don't pay for spaces
So tell me why when one day I did 800 lines and then 3 days later it shows I did 670 lines when I actually did 800 lines. The 800 lines is without spaces, headers, footers. So did those lines magically disappear? This happens to me weekly.
spaces
LOL. I think we need to transcribe a few reports without spaces..heck, let those being paid hourly fill the spaces in.
spaces
LOL. You just made my whole day.

anycompanypettyenoughtonotcountspacesisacompanytostayawayfrom. Who'spocketdoyouthinkthe$forthespacesislining? Quite frankly, I've been a med trans for nearly 30 years and I'm so damned tired of watching big business cut into our means of living. How did all this start anyways? Used to be in the old days that we were all just ICers looking to make a living, and we did in fact make a decent living. Then came the introduction of nationals and everyone ran to them thinking they'd be making BIG money.......Now the nationals are in place and their CEOs are making the bucks we thought we'd get a piece of. Wish there were a way of reversing this.
Spaces
She's lying. MQ does NOT PAY FOR SPACES. They treat their transcriptionists like crap. I found this out and left them. I found it out for a fact.... They do NOT PAY FOR SPACES. They have started this "trend" and other companies have begun to follow suit. They make me physically ill.
Spaces
Been there 2-1/2 months. Love it. Plenty of work.
Issue: Spaces. Recruiter said no spaces. Trainer said no spaces.
On the line count screen, clicked on one of my reports, then had an option to look at payroll stuff on it, so I did. It added up not only every single character I typed but spaces AND carriage returns (I had 719 spaces and 56 carriage returns) and used that number divided by 65 for my line count. NO KIDDING. I am surprised.
Who knew?! I'm excited!
spaces
Was this on DQS? And could you give more detail on how you did this (i.e., what exactly did you click on to get this info?). Thanks!
spaces
I was told years ago that I was not paid for spaces on the account that I was on, but some accounts were. It depended upon how it was set up when they won the account. I think that's why there are some who are and some who are not, thus the confusion. The only way to know is to manually count your lines and compare them to what the system counts.
10 cpl with spaces. nm

What about spaces?

no spaces
I kind of messed up my original post. I meant to say that spaces are not included. Thanks.
I think w/o spaces is 30% less than with spaces. nm

They do pay for spaces
At one time they did not pay for spaces but they do now. They are fine to work for- I have worked there 3 years and have never had a problem. They do not lie to us and they don't make anyone work 7 days. They are a stickler for quality.
Pay me for your spaces or else...
If they don't want to pay for them they must not feel they're important...just don't type them and then see what they say. : )
Spaces vs not
Take one of your old documents and figure it out both ways, even if you don't have a line counting program, do it in MS word and that will figure both ways and then you can see the difference and divide and see what percentage you are losing for no spaces. At least that will show you the difference between the two.
2 spaces
client probable couldn't care less.....but correct way is 2.
I would take 17 cpl with no spaces any day
Geez what do you people want?
spaces vs no spaces
Take a document and count with and without spaces and times it by your cpl rate to see what the difference is. Very easy to do. If you don't have a document, type a page or even a paragraph and even using microsoft word count, do the same. It shows you with and without spaces and you can see the difference.
Curious how do you make any money as it sounds like your doctor's office only pay 9 cpl (they are cheap and I can only charge 9 cpl) or did you mean you pay your IC 9 cpl and are not stating what you charge your accounts?
Pay with no spaces
Would some of the MTs who work with no spaces but do get headers mind sharing what their pay actually is? For me, I always break it down to what I am averaging an hour. After 15 years this just keeps going down , along with less benefits, and I am also starting to reevaluate my "career" choice.
