your paragraph style to double space when you hit enter. You need to change the "after" setting in the spacing section of the paragraph dialog box to the point size of the font you are using and click the Default button. You'll probably want to do this in a separate template unless you want this setting for all new documents.

You can set Word to not count blank lines by changing your paragraph style
to automatically double space after the paragraph.
do you blank it, change it, question it?

blank lines also
When I started my surgical/oncology account 6 years ago, the gal that had been doing it charged for blanks, from first line to the last line on letters, consults, etc. All blanks were counted so I just continued, the OM, docs are well aware of it. Also, that is why my cpl is lower than others also, it usually averages out in the wash.
Take out all blank lines
Go through and take out all blank lines and count or put on your line count on your file and see how many blanks there are and subtract. Remember if you have a header though on pg 2 and 3, it does not count those lines. Also I think that Sylcount will count lines only and no blanks. Also when doing your line count in MS word, it gives you the paragraphs and so if it is 20, subtract 20 lines, date to address is 4, address to RE is 2, RE to salutation is 2, etc. Usually there are ten blanks from date to Dear. Good luck.
You charge for blank lines? WOW! That's a first!
charge for blank lines
not my idea, but I'll take it!
You could just go through and delete all the blank lines.
Since it is just a test, why not try doing that?
I mean without blank lines in between patient notes
Some of my accounts are charged for blank lines..nm

You need to know how your company counts lines. It probably is not
counting the same as your line counter.
It counts the lines it ends up with, not what it starts with. nm

i agree -- lines counts are correct and include expanders per my checks.

6 character counts as a word
What would that calculate to be? Thanks for your help. I do not know many companies that pay by the word. I guess I will just have to see what my first pay check looks like. Thanks!
EXText word client blank screen everytime I login
I am using EXText Word Client software with Transnet. I am getting a blank screen everytime I login. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the software an upgraded but still errors out the same way. Are there any EXtexters who could help?
Also, you can't use Word for correct line counts
It doesn't deduct headers, footers, formatting commands. Extext line count deducts those depending on company setup.
Gross line, also including blank lines because my line rate is so low. It all works out in the wash.

Calculating lines using Word Count in Word
I have recently started a job where lines are calculated using the Microsoft Word word count tool. I think I read that you get cheated out of lines if a company counts this way. Is this true?
There is a word macro that can change that
for you. Not sure if it will work on your platform, though. If you need it, just answer on here and I will post the macro so you can paste it into your program macros and assign a shortcut

I send my work FTP and wondering if I send it blue background/white type, will the MTSO get it that way or will it appear normally with the white bkg/black type?
I hear that using the blue bkg/white type eases eye strain, which will help me, and wondering if I need to change it back before sending it via FTP.
it does not count gross lines...I count 37 and it counts 67.

Is there a way to change the default setting in Word - sm
for line numbering? It keeps indenting 1-2-3,etc. to the first tab and I need the numbers along the left margin. I went to <format>, <bullets and numbering>, <customize>, and changed the number position and alignment, and it lines everything up on the left margin.
However, if I have another numbered section in the report, it goes back to the default setting, indenting to the first tab.
Is there a way to change the default, or do I have to go through these steps for each numbered list?
Thanks!
How do you change display on Word template?
Does anyone know how to change the display to 100%. I have tried to modify normal.dot but no luck. Thanks in advance.
How do I change incorrect spelling in Word?
I accidentally spelled a medication wrong and added it to the dictionary. How do I go about changing this? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
Wrong. Just up Word, change to 150% and close.
Word will save that setting to your Normal template. Now, open a blank document and you will see that and subsequent documents will be at 150%. Problem solved.

EXText word client blank screen everytime I give ok in DIS screen
Thanks your suggestion was very valuable. At a specified time (which the technical side say, when the net speed is very good), it is working without a problem at all (whereas this was half working and half not working before even at this time), but other times, still the same problem exists.
Actually the blank screen comes every time I give "ok" in the DIS screen (patient details info screen).

That would tell you if the platform is making the changes to your Word and, if that's the case, talk to your platform tech support.
I have very few "canned" paragraphs.
I have 15000 or more words or phrases. You have to work at using an expander. I know, IT advertises it does wonders, but in reality, you still have to be creative and make the shortcuts. IT is not the best or fastest Expander for most people.
Go to a productivity site, read the various technques used, see the various words and phrases that people use, and then start using your head and put it all together. There is no quick easy solution.
third and fourth paragraphs
Say it all! You already have your answer.
Just open glo file in Word, highlight all, then change case and save back
to glo file. Use the Alt key trick to highlight just the column of words, then Shift + F3 to toggle through the change case commands. First save your glossary under a different name so you also keep the original.
Word count: 824 lines. DocuCount count: 897 lines.
I just counted the same file in Word and then in DocuCount, and DocuCount was higher than Word.
Just as an aside.
Read it and weep (ESPECIALLY the last 2 paragraphs)

Wednesday, 15 November 2006
Combined Companies Create Premier Outsourced Transcription Provider
Heartland Information Services has merged with Spryance, Inc., forming one of the premier offshore transcription providers in the United States. Spryance shareholders will fund the purchase of Heartland Information Services from HCR ManorCare. The new combined company will be marketed under the Heartland Information Services brand.
Headquartered in Boston, Spryance provides transcription service to more than 175 hospitals and clinics across the country, utilizing 1,200 MTs in India. Heartland’s corporate headquarters is located in Toledo, Ohio, with work centers in Bangalore and Delhi, India. By combining companies, the new Heartland will have over 2,500 medical transcriptionists providing service to over 200 hospital and clinical customers.
Dennis Paulik, General Manager of Heartland, will become the President and CEO of the new combined company. Raj Malhotra, CEO of Spryance, will become Chairman of the Board of the combined companies. Joining Mr. Malhotra on the board will be Gene Barduson, Chairman and CEO, Alteer, Inc., Dennis Byerly, former CEO Third Millennium Healthcare Systems, Inc., Mahendra Patel, formerly with DEC, David Beecken, Partner, Beecken Petty O’Keefe & Company, and Thomas Schleisinger, Partner, Beecken Petty O’Keefe & Company.

“The Spryance investors, led by Beecken Petty O’Keefe & Company and International Finance Corporation, provide the financial strength and resources for the new Heartland to grow rapidly,” adds Mr. Malhotra, Heartland Information Services Chairman of the Board.
THE cost-saving initiative of out-sourcing medical notes to India for typing is facing major problems. An internet link used to transfer patient information from Lister Hospital to India has failed to meet the needs of East and North Herts NHS Trust, both in terms of speed and capacity. The Trust had hoped to save as much as £1million by axing 15 medical secretary posts and outsourcing their work. However, a medical secretary from Lister said: "After the medical secretaries were made redundant it was discovered that the NHS server for the typing to be sent over the internet to India could not cope with this system. Medical secretaries are being told that the typing will be kept at the Trust for us to type, as done in the past."
Danny Mortimer, the Trust's director of human resources, said: "Like any project of its size, there will always be initial teething problems."
"Nationally the NHS is experiencing problems with this link, both in terms of its speed and capacity of transfer of information across the internet. Contingency plans are being considered locally by the Trust, including using a separate, secure link to the internet for the medical transcription service until the problems affecting it are resolved nationally. The Trust has introduced the medical transcription service because it knows that it will save money, while at the same time providing a consistent, high-quality service. This is proving to be the case already, although more work remains to be done."
American Association for Medical Transcription, in association with Prometric, announced the Registered Medical Transcriptionist (RMT) credentialing exam – a newly developed global ‘level-1’ credential in the arena of Medical Transcription. This program is aimed at helping the existing talent pool to scale up and meet the global standards and quality benchmarks. The two organizations also announced a special ‘India price’ for AAMT’s existing Certified Medical Transcriptionist (CMT) exam.
Medical Transcription is a booming industry with exponential growth prospects and opportunities for committed players. While globally the industry potential is around USD 30-33 billion, in India it is around USD 300 million. Currently, there are around 18,000 medical practitioners in the country and this is expected to almost double within the next 2-3 years.

How can you count your lines in Word, I used
to use the word count in Word and then divide it by something to get a standard line count for that report. Has anyone done this before? I forgot the way to calculate when working in Word.
Counting lines in Word
This actually gives you way more lines than if you calculated by 65 cpl. I worked for a company for a while that did this and on one short progress note I made over $3 more than by figuring the 65 cpl way. Let's say they are paying you 7 cents a line......this is like 11 cents a line counting the regular way. This is definitely in your favor...I have done the math on this one many times. Good luck!
You can insert entire paragraphs by easliy using the macro sm
feature.
Tools - macro- record new macro. name the macro box appears ( name it whatever you need to, i.e. Dr. Smith's appendecomy) and then a little box will appear to begining recording it. Type as much or as long of a paragraph as you need. This can be very very long! even pages if you want!!!) then hit the st (telling the macro to stop recording.) Next time you need to pull up that paragraph go into tools again and since you named it you should be able to find it easiy. The macros get stored in alphabetical order.
The macro that you make this way does not record mouse movements, only keyboard movements, but you can have long paragraphs easily inserted right into your document using this.
This is a great place (in macros) to store MDs names and adresses too. Then assign a shortcut key to open the macro box faster and voila! everyone will wonder how you got your work done so fast.
It means you have special formatting applied to those paragraphs sm
like keep lines together or keep with next. You can turn those squares off with the show/hide button on the toolbar or hit Ctrl+Shift +8 to toggle marks on or off -- that's probably what you hit to turn them on.
gross-anything on line counts as line, even one word
xx
Did you just say: You can very easily "add lines by inserting a word here and there"
I recall back in the mid 1990s, I was working with a fellow MT who was on midnight shift in medical records. He was making a huge sum of money and we all thought he was "the Whiz."
Come to find out, he was inserting phrases, embellishing dictated sentences I guess you'd call it, to get more lines per report. He got away with it for a number of years but was kissing up to the supervisor and director, always available to help out, nicest guy in the world - but a thief - who fooled us all.
Radiologist would surely notice eventually if not QA.
Word Macro to count Lines Strict inside
Hi,
The solutions others gave are good, but if I just needed to get the number of lines with typing (and don't need an invoice or a report), I'd use a Word macro.
The other solutions offered have this drawback: If the body of your document contains tables, the count Word gives you is vastly inflated, for Word counts each cell in that table as a line. This is not what the eye sees, and becomes problematic when you try to justify such to your client.
Below is a macro for counting what we at Emmaus call Lines Strict. (i.e. Lines with typing on them, vs Lines Extended that includes the blank lines).
To use it, copy from Public Sub through End Sub, and paste it into your macros along with your other macros. Easiest way of doing this is (after you have copied the appropriate lines):
1. Click Tools | Macros, and select an existing macro.
2. Click the Edit button.
3. Once the Visual Basic Editor opens, press Ctrl+End to move to the bottom.
4. Paste the clipboard contents.
5. Click File | Compile Normal. (If you've pasted things that don't belong, it won't compile.)
6. Click File | Close and Return to MS Word.
Merry Christmas! vJoe http://www.mpword.com
OOPS! I looked at the HTML code after I pasted the code into the editor on this board, and it added things that when pasted into the Visual Basic Editor in Word will not compile. Here's the code if you want to retype it, but pasting won't work. If you send me an email, I'll attach the code into a .txt document, and you won't have any problems. vjoet@attglobal.net
Public Sub GetLinesStrictCount() Dim CharsStrict As Long Dim Count As Long Dim ParaswBlanks As Long Dim ParasWOBlanks As Long Dim LineswBlanks As Long Dim BlankLines As Long Dim LinesWOBlanks As Long Dim NumOfTables As Long Dim NumOfRows As Long Dim TableRowCount As Long Dim x As Integer TableRowCount = 0 NumOfTables = 0 NumOfRows = 0 ActiveDocument.ComputeStatistics (wdStatisticCharacters) ActiveDocument.ComputeStatistics (wdStatisticLines) CharsStrict = ActiveDocument.BuiltInDocumentProperties(wdPropertyCharacters) ParasWOBlanks = ActiveDocument.BuiltInDocumentProperties(wdPropertyParas) LineswBlanks = ActiveDocument.BuiltInDocumentProperties(wdPropertyLines)
NumOfTables = ActiveDocument.Content.Tables.Count If NumOfTables > 0 Then For x = 1 To NumOfTables With ActiveDocument.Content.Tables.Item(x) NumOfRows = NumOfRows + .Rows.Count End With Next TableRowCount = NumOfRows End If If CharsStrict > 0 Then ParaswBlanks = ActiveDocument.Range(wdMainTextStory).Paragraphs.Count Else ParaswBlanks = 1 End If If LineswBlanks > 1 Then LineswBlanks = LineswBlanks + 1 End If If ParaswBlanks = 1 And ParasWOBlanks = 1 Then BlankLines = 0 Else BlankLines = ParaswBlanks - ParasWOBlanks End If LinesWOBlanks = LineswBlanks - BlankLines Count = LinesWOBlanks MsgBox "Lines Strict (with typing) = " & CStr(Count + TableRowCount) End Sub
Even 4.5 is too low. doctors do not change - they still hem and haw, change, change stuff along wit
It is just not enough for the work. Speech is great on the wrists but you are not just reading what is typed, you are making a lot of changes. I have a hard time doubling a lot of days with all the changes I have to make. Just my opinion.
