Black keys only means VBC - visual black character. They do not pay for spaces. This equates to exactly 2 cpl lower than the rate per line. If you were hired at 8 cpl, it is really only 6 cpl without the spaces by my many calculations. The gross line is the number of characters they pay per line. Most *lines* are 65 characters long no matter where they land.
