Why she was put down. sm

This is what hurts the most, long story.  She had seizures as a result of being hit in the head with a baseball when she was 4.  I know I should have had her spade prior to then, but I did not.  When I asked the vet about it at the age of 4, he said it was "already too late", and that since she had seizures he did not want to put her under anesthesia.  She stayed on phenobarbital and never had another seizure.  I should have gotten another vet, I just believed him and never got a second opinion.

Just 6 weeks ago I took her for shots and a vet tried to tell me that if I did not have her spade, she could get a life-threatening female infection.  I am pretty smart, but I felt, well she is 13, she is never around other dogs, and I am not going to do it.  Come to find out it is a hormonal thing, once they stop cycling they can get this and I feel so ignorant now.  I tried so hard to protect her with her seizure meds and such, and she ended up dying over something I was ignorant about.  She was 13 and when the vet showed me the x-rays he said, "you are probably dealing with cancer, too".  I realize my mistake now, that is why it hurts twice as bad, I was ignorant.  Please don't flame me, I have had other dogs and I have never heard of this condition.  And again, I was afraid she would not survive the surgery at 13 years of age.  It was costly having her put down on a holiday weekend; however, had I let it go 24 more hours, she would have been really, really sick and I could not bear it.
