WORKING IN DOC'S OFFICE
I doubt offices use MTs anymore. All of our hospitals use outside services. All of our clinics have the reports dictated back to the hospitals which then ship them out. I would love to get back on site again. My doctor actually types out his own report on a laptop as he is examining you. I read that is very popular. Where in CT are you?
Working in doctor's office
I have a small MTSO, two I/C's but last January started working in a clinic that used to me one of my clients -- but they put in electronic charts and after 4 years of pulling their hair out and late notes I now go in 2-3 days a week and one of my subs 2 days a week to do their notes. It is as an employee and no where near what I get with my own accounts but gets me out and with other people. Nice mixture. Out here in Oregon we have several large clinics that only use in-house people. Need to go to the medical offices located by hospitals. They are out there but don't expect big bucks as you won't get them.
working directly for rad office
If you took a position working from home directly for a small doctors' office (5 docs) with no ESL and you supplied your own computer and internet, what is the lowest line rate you would accept? There is a good chance they may provide benefits too, including medical insurance. This would be for radiology only with mammos, x-rays, CTs, diagnostics, ultrasounds and no MRIs.

Working from home and not going to the office
I work for a local hospital and I have worked from home for 20 years now.
I would never never go back to an office setting unless there no other at-home jobs were out there.
I have a separate office and can watch my house from thieves, throw a load of laundry in, put supper on early, etc. I do take my two 15 minute breaks and 30 minutes for lunch just like I am in the office. If I need to run a short errand I save my breaks and lunch and combine the two and have an hour to get back.
I have three grown children but I still get phone calls all day and have a separate phone line for them if they need me and screen other calls on regular phone line.
You just have to learn to kind of pace yourself. I do sometimes type in my PJs but not too often because my husband runs his business from our home and Fedex and UPS come here all of the time.
Just set a space aside if you can from the other part of the house. I try to stick to a rule for everyone "if they see my door closed to my office, then they try not to bother me unless it is absolute necessary."
You will love it if you ever try it.I really do not miss the office and its politics.
Sometimes being at home we home MTs do not get the necessary information like we should have. Also I can count part of one phone line and my office space and books and whatever it takes to do my job on income tax. Hope this helps. I do not think that you would regret it.
Working for a physician's office.
I am currently working for a small company as an IC. I need some extra work and I'm thinking of trying to get hired on with a local physician's office (if I can find any that are hiring and are willing to hire someone who is a recent graduate) and was wondering how do you charge them for your work? Is it per report, by the hour, so much per line, etc? Is there anyone out there who could give me some pointers as to how I can go about doing this? Thanks.

In-office work is different than working at home. That's just the way it is. If it seems too
rigid to you, maybe you should stick to working for the nationals.
Working at home is harder than in office
Because we are our own housekeeping, tech support, errand runner, no cafeteria, ect. I have no idea why they are passing around this WAHM myth. I don't understand the savings idea either because our utility bills are higher. In an office you get paid 15 min breaks 2x a shift too. You are also paid for all the stuff you deal with that you have to deal with to work. Like talking to supervisor, sending an email, reporting a problem, ect.
Hubs always comes into my office to kiss me hello or g'bye if I'm working. :) nm

I have over 2000 autocorrect entries and lost them all as well as my supplemental dictionary for my Stedman's spellcheck. Lots of grief!

Can anyone suggest an office in MQ that is not run like this Amherst office. They are absolutely
pathetic. I wonder how many other MTs are in that office in the same situation.
Just DQS from my office was transferred and the rest are getting on DQS before the office closes.

Ditto....granted I am not working much these days, but am currently trying out a new way of working
when I do work which seems to be helping. I am timing myself and keeping a log of how long it takes to to type however many minutes. I am averaging anywhere from 13-18 minutes of dictation an hour now doing this. Granted the time fluctuates between who I am typing, and if I have to look up names, addresses, etc., just depends on the division I am doing at the time. But work that used to take me 3 hours to do is now taking me under 2 hours, I am also trying to put in more macros as I go along, which slows me down initially but pays off in the long run of course. I was working "all the time" before but took forever to get done since I was not applying myself. This new "attitude" has helped me a lot. My goal, in the Fall, is to do 90 minutes a day consistently at 6 hours, and then maybe get up to 120 minutes a day at 8 hours, still while having at least half of the day free (do 60 minutes at night, and the other 60 by Noon). Thereby doing 1200-1400 lines a day. I have never really buckled down and done more than 8000 lines per pay period, so it will be a nice change. Maybe you can do something like that and have a specific knock off time as was suggested below.

that holiday you refuse to work? Grocery stores, food joints & seems any store is open on holidays and you expect them to be fully staffed, so why shouldn't we?
Yes, I took off for the first time on Christmas day, in 18 years and it was great, but I worked Christmas eve and this whole past weekend.

30 day TAT in this office ... office politics at its best
I have kept in touch with an MT I worked with at the last in-house job (radiology). This was inpatient radiology and also an outpatient radiology clinic the hospital operated.
One of the girls, a person who at one time folded towels but who was hired as a clerk, was just discovered to ahve not mailed out reports for 30 days. These include both in house reports and outpatient reports. They have been sitting on her desk because she "has not had time to do them."
What do you make of this? The lead MT is close to this girl (hence her being moved from housekeeper to clerk) and is trying to minimize the impact that not having the reports mailed to referring physicians' offices, as if it is a minor problem (how they found out about it is a doc's office called the MT's supervisor and asked why 30 days worth of reports were mailed to their office yesterday.
They were keeping it from the director of radiology. I think this is BIG and that heads should roll for negligence.

at home vs office - i am in office
well, I really was referring to the MONSTER MANAGER that I have, who has her favorites here, and she assigns them the easy doctors who say the same thing over and over, you know. I have to do something. I am losing my SELF at this point, with no church and no family. The stuff on here about running out of work, my lack of computer savvy, all has me just frozen. MOre about in-office. Do you have little habits like talking out loud to the dr? Someone will complain about you. Do you ever say a cussword? Someone will complain. Do you ever sigh? Complaints. About age - I was offered 2 trans. positoins in San Diego before I came here. I had gone to a seminar about how to look for work over age 55, had revamped my resume and my "presenting" self, and it made all the difference. Things are way different than they were evern 10 years ago, you will be judged by someone younger than you, but in this line of work they do appreciate experience and reliability. And the computer doesn't care if you're pretty. It's not your age unless you are sickly. Don't give up!! if that's what you want.
working IN A HOSPITAL is different than working at home.
Someone can steal you identity from the internet if they want to. Why would you go to the time and trouble to jeopardize a job that requires some level of skill to steal someone's identity or medical records? You could get a job as a retail clerk and get info easier than going through the testing required to become an MT.
Somehow working at home translates into not really working
My in-laws are the worst. Whenever they plan something last minute and my husband says that I had to work, they say, "but she works at home!". When I one time mentioned I had a "schedule" and basically punch a clock and work full time, I don't think they believed me. They will sometimes call mid-day during the week if they are in the area to see if I want to go for lunch, etc! The best is, my husband doesn't make all that much money, so where is it coming from, the money fairy? I am ready to strangle someone! So I know how you feel and I'm sorry it upset you. You are not alone.
I daydream about NOT working while I'm working.
There are so many other things I need and want to get done. I've been working way too hard lately, and summer is just slipping by again. Well, I'm outty.

and just now trying to enforce all of the sudden. I have only met quota a handful of times since starting DQS over a year ago. NOTHING has ever been said to me directly. Even contacted the office numerous times concerning this and just get blew off. So frustrated!!
Is this every MQ office?
I have been with them 8 years and I have not seen or heard anything about a check other than on this board.

My office is also my study room. It is lovely with a nice corner-style desk. I have a nice music set-up with cd changer, etc. and a nice sofa with a really pretty pine cabinet that holds all my extra "stuff". I have nice wall grouplngs with pictures of the grandkids and other things that make me happy on the shelves that are amongst the photos. It has a large window looking out to the front yard and a ceiling fan for a breeze.
I have another picture that I picked up at a yard sale last week that I also want to put up. It's a neat and quite large original pastel that looks like something you's see on Antiques Roadshow. In fact, if they ever come to my town I'll take it in and hope it's a treasure.

For tax purposes I have my own office. Also helps me to be able to "go to the office" and shut the door when not working as it seems I get more done this way. It might be small 8 x 8 or so but is large enough. I also will not keep any of our household finances in my office -- strictly for work related items only -- others are kept in a small office in the spare bedroom. That way I do not feel I am at work "all day long." But that is just me. Still work in sweats the first few hours, start to work within 15 minutes of getting up with coffee. Tried the other way with office in spare bedroom or living room and just did not work as I felt that the work was always there with me. Patti

I started off in the bedroom, moved to the dining room, then as our family expanded from 2 to 4 kids, I divided the dining room in half (It was huge! Have sat 27 people down at one time, the largest room in the house), had walls built and what do you know, I know have my own space! With a door and a window! My two older kids are in their teens and I have been finishing the basement and moving them down there. I thought about going down there myself, but I like my little office and I can hear the little ones and the window leads right to the backyard too. Nice and peaceful! But it wasn't always that way!

manager seemed to think we would not see this take over for a long, long time and that many were trying it and going back to using transcriptionists. Let the doc know you will be happy to help him out should he decide it is not working out for him. I am so sorry for you, hang in there.

An 8 x 10 room, with window seat for my dog, big light colored L desk with bookcase and armoire. White walls (which i hate!) and lots and lots of photos around of family and friends.

Spare bedroom. The second boy moved out and I grabbed it. Big enough for my L-shaped desk parked right next to the window so I can catch a breeze and peek outside. Just outside the window I have my flower garden with my giant pink hibiscus and sunflowers, all in bloom at the moment. I have a shepherd's hook with two hangers for birdseed. I painted the room blue and stuffed the closet with my computer junk and have some of those plastic take apart, put together shelves that I have sitting around for odds and ends, coffe pot, etc. My bookcase is in the corner. The dog's pillow is under the desk. Quite cozy since I spend the majority of my life in here! I also keep 2 of those plastic stackable drawer sets right under the desk to my left for my most used reference books and keep the receipts in the drawers. Quite handy.
We had a day like that at my office, too!
We always have trouble with the faxing console working properly, but today, out of the blue, it started faxing random OLD reports INSTEAD of the reports it was supposed to fax.
We blamed it on the software company having a wacked product (which they do), but maybe there was a full moon last night.

During the winter my office is in a spare basement bedroom, during the summer I have a folding portable desk I use in the main living area as I have my granddaughter daily and we feel we are more "together" than nana being downstairs.

When we moved I refused to live without one. It is huge and I have a place to be in "work mode". I will never not have my own office. :)
Every office is different
I have four offices that use the sticky paper for chart notes. If I were to use one page per patient, my goodness their already fat chart would be twice as large. Sorry but they pay my invoice, no questions asked, on time, and have never said anything when I increased prices, do not look elsewhere and if they want sticky paper used, cut apart -- I will do it. As for my surgeons, the girls would go nuts printing off the letters/consults as they are sometimes 4 pages long. I make one file per day with all the patients and if and when I have to locate a patient have it up within a minute or two if I know the date of service, if not doing a name search takes must a minute also. I also have the daily schedules for follow up. I do not charge for reprints as it is usually only one or two that I have to provide per month. My office gals are busy enough without doing this on top of everything else that they do. Like I have said many times (knock on wood) in the 6, 9 and 18 years that my clinics have been with me they have never even looked elsewhere for cheaper work and have been very loyal. So I will keep on providing as they wish and not rock the boat that pays my bills and is supplementing my retirement fund.
