Quitting Smoking
I have been smoke-free for 14 years and actually didn't want to quit but had to have major surgery and couldn't smoke in the hospital so I really had to quit before. I got the Habitrol (3 stage) patches which were Rx then and one other "trick". A stranger said what helped her was to chew on those Twizzlers black licorice sticks. She said that the residue left a residue not unlike the tar from cigarettes. I smoked 3 packs per day and even got up at night and smoked for over 20 years and no one was more surprised then me that I actually quit. My husband still smokes but not around me or in the house or my car.
I know it's tough. Good luck to you!
Quitting Smoking...sm
Hello, I'm an exsmoker who smoked for 25+ years, and I've been a nonsmoker now for 12 years. The only way I could do it was cold turkey, but my hint was I kept an unopened pack of cigs in my purse, and when the cravings came (which they did, something awful for about 3-5 days), I would look at that pack and tell myself that I got this far (8 hours, or 12 hours, or 24 hours) without opening it, and I could go on. I threw the pack out after about 2 weeks, and never looked back. The smell now actually makes me sick. I must admit that I still have a craving after a meal once in a blue moon, but it soon passes. Please hang in there. You CAN do this!!! Good luck. I wish losing weight was even half as easy as quitting smoking was...and that wasn't easy at all. Take care of yourself.
Sorry y'all are going through this
I'm still a student, but have been in the workplace for years and years. It's painful going through re-orgs, etc (the business I was in, we had re-orgs every 2-3 years, and layoffs every 18 MO - 2 years). I hope you all are able to make the right decision for yourselves and your families.
Good luck to you all!!!
(NOTE: Please don't infiltrate the MT market, us newbies will need jobs too )
thanks y'all
I appreciate your input, really, really. I will take this under advisement and look for those books.
Another thing is, he seems really insecure, and rightly so, I guess, with all that's happened. He seems like he can't do anything without looking at me first. Do you know what I mean? I mean, when someone asks him a question, he looks at me before saying anything. As for playing and such, he's pretty independent, but it seems he lacks problem solving skills and lacks social skills. That makes me really nervous because along with the PTSD the ex so kindly gave me, he also made me socially phobic because I depend so much on what other people think of me, and I DON'T want my child growing up like that! Any suggestions on how to make him more of his own person? I really worry that he is so dependent on others that it will make him an easy target, and he'll just conform to what anybody says and who knows what that will entail!
Wow, its sad y'all don't have anything better to do
This board gets worse all the time, sigh.
where y'all going?..nm
Please tell so that we can daydream.
Another day of not smoking
YES....
I am on day 9 of no smoking. I am
Birthday is next month and I have a goal to make it to my birthday and then will extend my goal from there. So far, so good. Hopefully continues.
Congratulations to you.
I would like some of what you both are smoking, please.

I would try smoking

Smoking...
That is good info. Thank you so much ... am disappointed because he does not really want to quit ... I will never understand how someone can claim to know how awful the health-related issues are to smoking, and yet somehow "justify" in their heads that the enjoyment they receive from smoking totally overrides any potential "risk" they may have "down the road" from their smoking ... for me, it just does not compute. Oh well. I will never, ever give up on giving him encouragement and pointing out all his precious cigarettes deleterious effects. Wouldn't be able to go to sleep at night, if I didn't. Thanks again.
Do most of y'all have DSL/cable?
It seems like most companies now require it - anyone still on sloooooow dial-up?
well I'm older than y'all and I can tell you....sm
I got less than a decade on you but it starts happening around 40+ (*winks at the 39 y/o poster) and it happens. At 40, I started writing down lists, whereas prior I never needed a list (to go shopping, let's say). About halfway through my 40s, it was "where are my keys and/or my eyeglasses" things. I talked to a bunch of women who confirmed this (older than me). Now, I do the room - "why did I just walk in here?" - thing.
I try not to worry about it. I had a dad (who died nearly 2 years ago at a very old age and more than twice my age *S*) whose short-term memory was not great from his 60s on into his 90s, but his long-term memory was so EXCELLENT that he could tell you a story about a horse, his neighborhood, and a situation that he experienced at 5 years old (an emotional trauma) with such clarity and lucency, you could picture the entire situation yourself. That, in and of itself, amazed many!
So, don't beat yourselves up about this stuff. There are lots of books out about this very subject. When you think about these things, well....what's the alternative? (I'm thinking some extra serotonin *LOL*) - but really, these things will occur and I'm not choosing the alternative, that's a given (i.e., death). *LOL* So, I'll live with these challenging things happening and try not to kick myself every time I mess up.
I will tell you I am much better about my keys and eyeglasses today because I made places for them to sit (if I remember to not toss them wherever *LOL*)
You are all not alone, that's a given too
Thanks for the feedback, y'all.
Didn't think it was only me. One national company, I did three months, worked until I got my bonus, figured I had deserved it. The next company I went with I lasted six months, six months too long, not wanting to change, hoping it would get better. The fourth national, I lasted two weeks, two weeks too long, and by that time, I knew what I was looking for, so the last company was 2 days. Got wise! And as another poster stated, I HATE to change jobs, but in this business, it seems to be forced on you. When will these companies wise up? But then, again, they have nothing to lose.
oh man I could go on a rant right here with y'all but DH just got sm
home from work so I am afraid I would get caught!
Y'all need to grow up
I have 35+ years in this field -- started out on the job with a typewriter and "tanks of dictation" I for one read posts and it's " I only want to work Monday through Friday, I can't work because of kids, whine, complain, etc, I need benefits so on and so forth -- I have been working for 30+ years -- I KNOW how to search the internet, how to spell and I will spend time researching etc -- maybe for those of you, PRIVATE insurance is an option -- I know in my own personal experience last year when I broke my leg and was in a cast for 2 months, my hospital bill INCLUDING follow up was $26.
So, you didn't get a "Christmas/holiday bonus", so you didn't get an MT week gift -- right now, be GLAD you have a J-O-B and quiit whining and complaining and most of all GROW UP!!!
btw -- s/o makes $22 an hour -- he "got a raise" but come down to the nitty gritty, he LOST HIS RAISE and is making $3.00 LESS -- no benefits either
Y'all are so sweet! s/m
The pink liquid is Clavamox/Amoxicillin. They give it to dry, and when you get home you add water to it to mix it up. It has a short shelf-life. It also comes in pills.
I only had one UTI in my life, which was the pits. I do know about Azo (I think that's what they call it). I can't remember if it's similar to/same as the cranberry juice/pills. While I know many women swear by these products, the cranberry thing was also mentioned in my research for cats.
My vet is excellent, but he's very expensive (and oh, such a looker)! It's nice to be on his "A-list. Anyway, Lindsay totally freaks out when I try to use the syringe on her. She's a total piece of work, but so sweet. At the moment, she appears to be acting better, but that's not good enough for me. Y'all obviously know all about that. Of course, add the the QrazyQ "wages," as they call them, and it makes it even more stressful. But having spent thousands in the good ole' days on my cardiomyopathy cat and even taking my "own" radiologist bud with me for her cardiac echo, $ was no issue. I also used L-carnitine, Lasix, propranolol, and other stuff. She lived at least 3 years longer from my protocol.
my vet told me last time that moist food is better, but I quit giving it to them a long time ago (3 cats chasing bowls, etc.). I also read where dry food with sugar, etc. is also a no-no.
Actually, I found some Clavamox pills, but they're expired. I think I'll try to give one to her, anyway. It's 6 of one, half of the other, ya know.
Thanks for the kind words and suggestions. I'll keep checking back here. It really means a lot!

quit smoking tip
peppermints helped me a great deal...especially candy canes because I could hold them as a substitution....went back to the garbage during a nasy viscious divorce & now can't afford nor want to smoke anymore so I'll be joining you! don't want to look or smell like this anymore
do you not know the dangers of smoking?????
Just kidding, i too am a smoker. Hate it soooo much but at the same time i look so forward to that smoke on the drive home from class. I have smoked in my house, I try not to because of the smell, but if i'm stressed emotionally, i turned to my good friend 'the pack'...my new method of quitting this time...POPCORN!!! I will buy bags of it and when I get the urge to smoke, i will chow down. It could work because its hand to mouth motion, a bit self destructive and i also look forward to eating it. good luck to me!!! Target has the best popcorn too, very salty.
Well, I quit smoking but now I'm fat
It has been about two months since my last cig. But dang, I am porky now. At 47, this is NOT a good time to put on extra weight. I know i should go for walks, eat carrots and drink water. I guess the motivation isn't there.
It is hard to believe I gained 20 lb in two months but my oh my I have. You should see my face! Chipmunk cheeks. and my clothes, even the baggy ones, don't fit any longer. I bought a new outfit last month and it doesn't fit any more.
HELP!!!
I know what you mean, I quit smoking
joined a fitness center and was very diligent about going every day. But, the scale has went up anyway. I am pretty much at a loss as to what to do. I do not want to start smoking again, I feel much better since I quit.
Congratulations to you.
Can anyone explain smoking hx to me?
I just typed this:
"The patient has an approximate two to three history of smoking two to three cigars per week."
I also have never understood that, for example, "25 pack year history".
Anyone want to enlighten me??
Another fella smoking on O2.
Duhhhhhhh! Nearly burned off his face. Ouch! Think he'll do it again? Ummm...yep!
I quit smoking
No point to this message; just thought of it and am congratulating myself.
Smoking lines there! Wow!! I can't even
s
Yes I have used it to quit smoking!! sm
Five months now without a cigarette; however, the nausea was very bad for me. I only took the Chantix for 1 month and had to stop. I couldn't take the nausea any longer. I even tried Zantac with it and still nauseous most of the time.
Anyhow, I quit June 12, 2007 and still without a cigarette. It really does work. The nausea and weird dreams were my side effects. My sleep pattern was broken up for the month with the dreams. I smoked 1-1/2 packs a day for 20 years, started when I was 16. Now with the help of Chantix am smoke free.
I tried all the other forms such as the patch, gum, etc and nothing really worked like this did. I have no withdrawal symptoms or mood changes whatsoever. I did seem to laugh a lot and sometimes inappropriately while on Chantix; however, since I stopped taking it, I am back to normal.
Good luck with whatever you decide. I am now worried about gaining more weight and taking the weight off that I gained over the past few months since I quit. Being nauseous, I found myself eating pretzels all the time to try and settle my stomach, very fattening.
Wow, do most of y'all work in your bedrooms? sm
I thought I was in the minority here, working in my bedroom. Figured most MTs had a nice home office. Well, nice to know I'm not alone in my bedroom...
ok, thanks! just got freaked cause I thought y'all were gone!
QTers - did y'all get anything for MT Week? nm
d
4000 LPD??? They think y'all are machines?..
Are y'all meaning Sylcount?
If you need an Expander too, you can get Instant Text, which has counting, invoicing, and reporting built in. :-)
shouldn't y'all be having this script elsewhere?

Y'all are right. I am not setting up the boundaries myself! Thanks!

quitting
you might want to try a LOA or a few days off while you check out the new job... I thought I had found the PERFECT job in March from the description I got from the recruiter...... After six days on FOUR different accounts (which they expected me to go on production pay after four days!!!!), and then finding out these were not even the accounts I was hired for, I RAN BACK to you-know-where, happy to have the option and not complaining much anymore :)
Has anyone ever gotten something like this when quitting
I quit a national MTSO a little while ago and they just sent me a "termination agreement" with a "release" that they expect me to sign that says: "...you hereby release, for yourself and all people who may act on your behalf, XXXCOMPANY, and its subsidiearies, affiliates, officers, employees and agents from all claims or causes of action, arising from or relating to your employment with XXXCOMPANY, including, but not limited to, any such claims or causes of action arising under any Federal or Sate law, including Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1965 and 1991 or the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, as amended."
Has anyone else ever received anything like this before when they quit? I've worked for 4 different MTSOs and have never gotten anything like this, not even from Medquist (and the company that sent this isn't MQ). I'm not about to sign anything like this, but just wondering why in the world they would feel they need to protect themselves like this and if this is standard procedure?
Quitting MQ
SMART MOVE! i'm just about there myself.
Quitting
Am not a smoker myself, but know people who have tried to quit. I know it's one of the hardest things to do, and I wish you continued success. My brother was an avid smoker for most of his life. He died from lung cancer.
not quitting yet
I don't think Wal-Mart or Burger King will let me stay home with the kids when they are sick or take a break to run them to the pool in the Summer. I, for one, will continue MTing. I know I make more $ than I could at Wal-Mart or Burger King!
Quitting a job
After job hunting for about 3 months, in desperation I accepted an in-house job in the medical records department of a large, seven-doctor clinic that was 98% clerical and about 2% transcription. I was told this upfront . Also I was advised to wear comfortable shoes, not heels, as there would be a lot of walking involved. I haven't worn heels in several years except to church so that wasn't a problem. Since I do have very flat feet I bought two pairs of comfortable wide shoes with lots of support (spent about $100 for both, which is more than I normally spend on shoes).
As it turned out, most days the work required 8 hours or more of standing and walking, posting the daily notes turned in by the contract Transcriptionist and filing/pulling charts. In addition, my work area was very cramped, there was one more person in the office than I expected (she and her desk were behind a screen on the day of my interview) everyone talked and laughed constantly and loudly and gossiped, used profanity and vulgar language -- generally, was the nightmare of "office politics" people dread--the worse was our boss, who used threats in reprimanding me and others in front of co-workers on a daily basis. Also, I was seeing a doctor for foot and ankle pain and taking Ultram daily. The doctor said I should try to stand only a couple of hours a day, but that was impossible. Finally, all of these caused me to quit. I turned in a 2-week notice, had a change of heart and tried it for 2 more days, then just walked out after an argument with the girl who was supposed to be training me about who was to print (sitting) and who was to post that day. I needed more instruction and practice I knew, and I felt that was why I was having so more trouble getting "up to speed" on the computer programs. The few reports I had to transcribe were a piece of cake; it was everything else I was expected to do.
My question is, how would you explain this on a resume and during an interview? I have worked over 30 years and have never walked out on a job before, but I simply could not take it. I have been asked if I thought it was a "hostile workplace," and in some respects it really was.
Thanks for any constructive advice...
You may want to think before just quitting on
resume. You don't want to get a bad reputation. I have found it is better to be honest, but tactful. You are better off working the two weeks. I highly doubt a company would dump you on the spot, and if they do, then I would make sure you try to get some documentation from them as to their policy in this regard.
I don't know because I'm not quitting because of that!
nm
quitting sm
They would not hesitate to get rid of you for a penny less, believe me, I have had it done to me. Once you quit, they will hold it against you. If they find someone else, don't think they are going to give you a notice. It's up to you, it's your health. Whatever makes your life easier is what you have to do.
The only evil I find about smoking is. . .
How darn hard it is to quit. I have tried everything. Patches, gum, Wellbutrin, Zyban, cold turkey, etc.
Don't buy them by the pack anymore. We (my husband and I) roll our own. Buy a can of tobacco and have a little machine and thought that would deter us, but noooooooooo. $8 a week compared to over $8 a DAY.
We do keep trying so there is hope that someday, hopefully within the next 6 months, we can say see ya! Yeah right.
risks uf using smoking marijuana
besides the social implications there are many researched medical reasons not to. Just a few:
http://cyber.law.harvard.edu/evidence99/marijuana/Health_1.html thats just one web site. There are plenty more
Furthermore, smoking pot dries up you mucous membranes promoting cavities and tooth decay, does cause respiratory ailments and I sure as hell don't want to meet someone driving whose judgement has been impaired with pot any more than I want to meet someone whose judgement has been impaired by alcohol. Please substantiate your claim that it is LESS harmful than alcohol
It won't take cancer to quit smoking. Try
ASTHMA, a common problem for smokers. When you can't breathe when there is a strange odor around such as perfume, you won't get near a cigarette because if you do, you won't be able to breathe. You will cough, and choke and gasp for air and feel air hunger when you sit down. It is not a fun way to live, and I absolutely LOVED my cigarettes, a real hard core addict to nicotine.
Husband and I both quit smoking on same day
We tried separately in the past alone and he quit for 6 months and then went back to smoking. I even smoked with the patch on and almost had a heart attack, not a good thing at all. We both want to quit and we hope that we will be able to do this. I think I have some patches left in a drawer around the house and they worked for my husband. I have been smoking for 40 years and he the same amount of time. I will go to the Stop Smoking Center. We figure we could save ourselves 70.00 a week or more but not smoking and that is one of the reasons to stop. Thanks for your encouraging words. You and your husband should be proud, my doctor told me it is like kicking a cocaine habit, which is sooo addictive and I agree. I smoke most believe it or not at my desk. My husband is going to repaint my office and put up wallpaper, one wall is yellow from the smoke, grosses me out and my kids. Thanks again.
Would you'all mind telling me where you ordered from? sm
I plan to order mine in the next month or two and understand you can order from distributors. Of course I would like the best deal on price and shipping and want to be sure I order from a reliable source and wonder where each of you ended up buying yours. Thanks for any help!
Since so many of y'all work in the bedroom, here's a link for you.
