When I receive these types of call, I ask if the caller is interested enough in a consultation. If they say yes, then I tell them the first hour is $50 and once I receive the check, we'll schedule their appointment. My reasoning? Their calls at taking me away from making money; if they're as interested as they say they are, then they'll either put their money where their mouth is or not. It's a futile exercise to explain the reality of the job when 1) the have no financial stake in it, and 2) they wouldn't believe you anyway.
