Where? I have never gotten paid for any of these, especially sudden illnesses, or I would be rich!

IC 12 years, took 2 vacations in that time
It is very_difficult to get time off for vacation when you work for yourself and cut out middle people......I do exactly that and I haven't had a vacation since 2005 and before that during 9/11/01. The offices may understand and allow you 2 weeks but then you have to play *catch-up* when you return, trying to bring them all current.
It's a trade-off for sure, unless you have friends that can cover your vacation time and who you trust with the work.
Working while sick!
Well, it has finally hit my house, specifically me, hard! The flu has come. I have coughed and gagged so much that my ears have popped and now everything sounds like it is in a hole or muffled. Any ideas on how to get my hearing back to normal? I haven't worked in 3 days as I have not been able to even sit up. Today is the first day I have even felt like attempting to do anything and I need to get back to work. It is so hard to work when you can't hardly hear your dictation.
Just my experience.. I get less sick when I am working in the car.
I think it is because I am concentrating on my typing and computer than looking up. I love being able to work traveling down the road. For me, I'd rather be making good money while traveling instead of sleeping. Heck, as much as it costs to fill up the gas tank, we have to offset it somehow. As far as the other poster says about hitting bumps, hitting wrong keys etc.. I haven't had that problem. I actually bought a portable desktop board that I set everything on so it stablizes my work area.
Payroll law? MDI-Fl now pays 6th working day after end of payperiod.
California laws say must be paid on or before the 5th working day after end of pay period. Because the company is in Florida, would their law supercede California law?
Burning my computer. Sick of working.

sick of working for crappy companies?
I have been thinking about starting my own company. I have done some research and it looks like all I really need is an FTP site, handhelds (that the doc's purchase themselves), and to get accounts. If anyone is interested in doing this with me let me know...or if anyone has any other information on starting a company input would be appreciated!
Why are we working as IC's and the companies are making profits off of us? Lets cut out the middle man and make the money we deserve!!
Working for more than one service.
Thanks for all the input. I appreciate the help. I don't like to put all my eggs in one basket.
A good expander pays for itself in no time at all.
Word files corrupt too easily so be sure to keep a backup for when you've lost all your shortcuts.
Also remember that you can only use autotext in Word and you're working "harder not smarter." JMHO.
Working for a private service
I just started working for a small independent service and was wondering if I could have some input. I am getting paid .13 a line and the service takes 25% of my gross earnings. Is this normal? Or is the percentage too high?
If you are talking about working for a service
it is about par

Suggestion for those working for a service (sm)
Unless you are quite computer savvy, it does not pay to just blindly follow advice you may see from MTs who are also computer gurus as to configuring your computer for efficiency. These so-called efficient programs are not always easily compatible with the platforms services use. Always call your company's IT help department and ask before making a change.
For instance, my company uses ExText, and I was not too smart to switch over Mozilla Foxfire. I'm sure it is a great program for independent MTs who can set up whole systems with their eyes closed, but it has caused some headaches for me in my fairly computer ignorant state.
Then when my computer got slow I figured it was a virus, so I downloaded this "highly recommended" software, PC Doctor. Again, I'm sure it's an excellent program, but it disabled all sorts of things on my computer that I need. And it wasn't even a free program. Grr. My IT person told me they use a free program. Wish I'd done that one instead.
And to think I do these things to speed my computer up! I'm such an id-iot.

working as a customer service rep from home....sm
taking phone calls like orders for things, etc., showed very pregnant woman with little kids with phone headset working on computer . Raved about flexibility, own hours, fit her schedule, blah, blah.... Had to be able to work alone, etc., all the work ethics we have to have, and good typist. Full time, they said pays VERY well, with emphasis on the "very." I think this woman was making 12-15 an hour, can't remember exactly. Said there were about 10,000 women doing it and it is the up and coming thing. Check out the GMA website... I think it was "Women at Work"...... something like that.
2 part time (totaling 40+/-) 1 pays weekly/1 biweekly.
Weekly for food. Biweekly for bills.
To me working on a holiday is a premium service and the IC should be compensated anything
above and beyond the call of duty. I have charged more per line when working a holiday only when it has been specifically requested that I work the holiday. If I decide to work on a holiday just because I want to catch up or I have free time, I won't charge extra for that.
But if the client asks me to work a holiday because they need coverage, then I will charge a little more per line, usually just a couple of cents more per line. I don't understand why anyone wouldn't "dream" of doing this. I've known computer technicians, electricians, plumbers etc. who charge more for after hours calls and holiday calls. Why should we be any different?
Made 11-12 cents a line working for a service in 1989
sucks
Just read whole thread. Yes. Working for a service is okay because line rates
actually have gone down. Just make sure they pay for spaces, headers, footers.
Not anymore. For some time now, I've been working 32 hours and am considered full time to receive

Working full time at home with small children is hard but part time works great
is almost impossible. You will either have to work when your spouse is home or for only a few hours during the day and then more when they are asleep. I work part time at home and my kids (2&5 now) have done very, very well. They are great kids, very well behaved, don't get into much. I stop working to check on them/give them some attention every hour or so while I work (5 hours each afternoon or so) and they get all my attention in the morning and at night. It has worked out beautifully for us.
I work for Warminster at MQ and I am sick to death of being jerked around with no work all the time.
I would like a job where I can depend on the work and it does not seem to be in this office of MQ.
VR pays half of what typing pays...
If you would read her post more closely she said she does VR, which pays half of what straight typing does. I do VR and have made 4 cpl, so 5 is actually good and 4-5 is an industry standard, and may be even less if you are an employee. The problem is that you have to double your line counts in order to make decent money, which is not always easy. I embrace VR because I like it better than straight typing, but it is not productive for everyone, no matter how hard you try.
New job first, save sick time, then surgery or surgery first?
I’d like to go back to medical secretary work. I’ve had cortisone shots in my ECU tendon 3 or 4 times and was warned not to have too many or my tendon could rupture. It’s been very weak for a year or so and my left wrist is smaller than my right wrist. I can’t type at all with my left pinky so I think it’s ruptured. I have Word auto correct and Instant Text set up so I very seldom type As, Qs, or Zs. I haven’t had surgery because I have my own account, no subs, a DD in college to support, and no disability insurance and didn’t want to take time off work for surgery. I do have medical insurance though my DH.
I’m debating whether to get a job, save up sick time, and have the surgery while getting sick time pay or have the surgery first without any sick time pay.
I’ve done medical secretary work before. I figured if I use Word there I can save their Auto Correct and transfer mine. If they use EMR, I can make my own shorts to stay away from Q, S and Z. I could only accept a job where I don’t type for more than an hour straight, which is what I do now. Then I started worrying about what if I have to use someone else’s computer? What if I unexpectedly have to type more than an hour?
I think I have cold feet about getting a job outside the home after over 7 years at home AND I’ve had cold feet about having surgery! Can someone help me think this through logically? I can’t think straight when my feet are cold.
I AM SICK, SICK, SICK AND TIRED
Of bad dictators and QA that takes up for them!!!! I am sick to death of:
1. Doc saying paragraph after every sentence.
2. Docs never dictating the first name of doc they are writing to.
3. QA asking us to insert certain sentences in certain places for certain doctors who do not dictate them.
4. Docs wanting their own specific headings but not dictating them.
5. Docs who ramble, never saying period.
6. QA asking us to **fix** their grammer, mistakes, fragmented sentences, and verb tenses and sometimes when we do, we are docked points for **not transcribed as dictated.**
7. QA not wanting anything sent to them, stating **researach medical terms and facilities you are not familiar with.** If they are not there to help us out, what are they doing there????
8. Docs, NPs, and PAs who do not know how to dictate, pronounce, or spell.
9. QA asking us to use BOS, but not knowing it themselves.
10. Doing work I do not get paid for.
Before QA became involved, in years gone by, if a doc's dictation was awful - then that is what he got for transcription and more times than not, they would straighten up and make a better effort. Not now - we or QA has to almost do the dictation for them!! They are the ones with the medical degree - not us. What happened to us just transcribing what is dictated. Why can't they be responsible for what prints out?? If someone could let them know how much trouble their dictation style causes, it would cut my transcription time in half. My list could go on and on. It is a terrible time to be thinking about getting out of the business, but if this crap keeps up - I have to give it some serious consideration. The job just AIN'T what it used to be.
must do vacations!
Well, first of all you must have "Me" time. Give yourself a vacation at least once a year. I always take vacations and holidays off and only work minimal weekends!
Vacations
We usually take a big family vacation during Spring Break. We missed this year because my husband had open heart surgery, but in previous years we went to South Carolina, and Club Med in Florida a few times. I'm thankful that my job doesnt require me to work weekends and I get four weeks paid vacation.
vacations
We haven't taken a "real vacation" this year for some reason. I think because my work has been so back logged, but I see the top now, so perhaps we will take a trip soon. We have taken several 3-4 day weekends, and I'm usually bored with a place after 3-4 days anyway. I'm in Texas so I want to go somewhere cool!
IC vacations
I do fill-in work for a friend of mine when she goes on vacation and the clinic doesn't seem to mind. She just got their permission to have me stand in for her. It seems to work. As an IC, I also take my laptop and work on vacation. I wonder what it'd feel like to actually take a vacation and not work on it LOL
Why isn't part time not working for you?
Hope you don't mind my asking why Spheris part time is not working out for you? Thanks. Just want to know what I could be getting into.
Will soon be working in Word for the first time sm
and I was going to use Shortcut, but do I need to? Would the auto-correct feature of Word work just the same, or is there an advantage to using Shortcut? I am an old PRD+ user, and am now using Bayscribe, which uses an Expander similar to PRD, so now am having to evaluate options.
Thanks for your input.
Too much time usually spent working (sm)
Like the saying goes, "How many people at the end of their lives say, "I wish I had spent more time working." NOT - being with those who mean the most to us more important, of course.
Thank you so much...I got it working now! I appreciate your taking the time to help out. nm

If you spent some time working instead of
you might make some of that money that you find so elusive. All you are trying to do is stir up trouble. I dislike AAMT as much as the next person. I am an MT myself first, and MTSO only because I have more work than I can handle myself. I get 14/15 cpl. That's it. I know in your dreams you think MTSOs are making so much more and getting rich. I am telling you it's not true. Maybe Medquist is getting rich, but I'm not and neither are any of the other small MTSOs I know of.
working two jobs at same time
Okay, this may be a strange question - but here goes... Does anybody work two different jobs, are clocked in at the same time with both? For instance, two different companies, two different computers, clock in with both jobs at the same time, do a couple of documents with one, go to other job and do a couple of jobs, and so on...?
I now am only working part-time but
in the past many jobs and mostly had 2 until I married my knight in shining armour. Now I am a part-timer after having worked over 20+ years at 2 really full time jobs.
I love getting up and working at that time.
It was the only time that I could actually concentrate and have quiet time in my house. I have a 3-year-old son and grandkids that lived with me a couple of months ago...it was hard to try to work while everyone was doing their daily thing. So, I just started getting up and 4 a.m. was a good time. I would stop around 8 and get my mom/son's breakfast ready and get them situated. After that I could go back to work until I was through, taking breaks in between. I prefer the 4 a.m. thing...it works for me. You will have to find what works for you and I am sure that you will.
What car does this Dr drive, vacations does he

I f you are working at the time you want to check the lines, hit F9

Anybody working two full time jobs
Due to the lack of work (on a regular basis) with my current full time at-home job, I'm considering taking another full time job...7am to 3pm then 3pm to 11pm. I don't know what else to do. I can't afford to go days without meeting minimum line count because there is no work.
Am I nuts to try this?
working full time with kids
If it is about taking off a couple years, there is nothing wrong with that. However, you just can't say that it cannot be done - because there are several of us here that, obviously, can do it.
I only have dial-up when working from home (most of the time).
I get my work as dss files as email attachments. Originally I did not think dial-up would work at all, so I set up an office at my mom's house where I have DSL. It does only take seconds to download with DSL, and takes several minutes for a huge file with dial-up. I can download a file while I am transcribing another one. It takes less than a minute for me to send the completed file back. This is certainly acceptable, although I hope they get DSL here soon. It takes longer to Google something.
My experience - first time traveling and working
Just got back from Lake Tahoe. I told some of you I would report back and let you know how it went. This was my first experience MTing on the road, and it went so smoothly. I worked about 20 hours from the hotel. They had nice comfy chairs and table big enough to hold all my stuff comfortably. It was amazing being able to look out over the lake and the mountains while working. My only complaint was this particular hotel did not offer a weekly rate for WI Fi. They charged by the day, and it was kind of pricey at $12 a day. I was worried about not having my books, but it was not an issue at all.
Taking a vacation by myself was the most amazing experience. I would highly recommend it to any of you who need to get away from the daily stresses of life. I feel so refreshed!
About $30,000 working 5 hr per day considered full-time
because I make my required line quota for full time, so I get the benefits. Would try to do more but take care of my three year old grandchild during the days, so only can work evenings and let me tell you by the evenings I'm tired!! In a few years my DH will retire and I will probably be putting in an 8 hour day for awhile then and hopefully can get up to the $50,000 at least for a year or two. Still have years to go for retirement for me.
On their vacations and jets and yachts, etc.

Question for everyone. Do you take annual vacations. If so, where? We take 3 or 4. nm

$1,200 month working part-time with National/other. nm
anyone feel weird working at home all the time?
Who smiles at everyone way too much and tries too hard to make conversation?
Time saved working at home is about 2 hours
The time it takes to get up, shower, do make-up and hair, dress, get in the car and drive to work, then back home equals about two hours for me. I work a PT job along with a FT job at home. Plus money saved not needing to use a dry cleaners, keeping up the ward robe.
AAMT has been working on that for a long time. Frankly sm
I would prefer AAMT start working on getting us better working conditions, a more standardized and fair pay scale, and benefits, instead of certifying offshore MTs and getting involved in offshoring to the extent that they are. Really, now, which do you care most about?
I made 21,000 last year working part time...
hoping when my youngest gets a bit older (she is 16 months) I can make a bit more...
