and how about radiology by the report? I have searched the archives and am just getting more and more confused. I have worked in house for 15 years and do all the big four and radiology. I made $15.67 per hour until we were eliminated on Friday. What is the average? I am medium fast, about 200 lines an hour or 15 radiology reports an hour.
Can anyone just give me an idea? It seems that the services are all over the place in terms of rates.

Line rate isn't the only factor -- your lines/hour average is key, too.
Even at 7 cpl, keeping about 275 lines/hour average keeps you at $19.25 an hour and that is $40,000 a year.
It is a myriad of factors involved. You have to have the knowledge, be decisive, self-sufficient and very focused. Then, you need to negotiate as high a base rate as you can and look toward the incentive plan to increase your paycheck.
With our incentive, it was not worth it if I couldn't hit high lines in a day. So, I changed my schedule to hit those lines.
I am tired after my work days but having the 4 days a week off and a good income makes it worth it for me. It allows me to spend my days off doing things I want to.

Average QA rate?
What's the average rate for a QA? After 5 years of being an MT, I've been offered a QA position and they are offering $1.85 per report. Obviously it depends on the length of the report, but she says it'll average about $0.03 per line. Is this about average for a QA? What about the per report thing? Is it normal to pay that way? I think I would rather get paid per line....

The average is now $1.00-$1.25, so that is a good rate. sm
If it includes mammos and/or plain films, it will balance out the MRIs and CTs. Just make sure that they do not include IR reports in there at that rate. There are probably only 3 decent radiology transcription companies out there, so do you homework and not just the nay-sayers or cheerleaders. Look for the longer answers with details, not the "go for it" or "stay away" kind. I have found that those are either angry ex-employees of a company or new hires that are still in the honeymoon phase. Look for advice from those that have been at a company over a year; that is a good length of time for an impression to be accurate.

if you look at the IRS website it's pretty clear what constitutes IC versus SE versus employee. You might want to photocopy that along with a copy of your contract with your next invoice and also put on the invoice any monies due from past invoices they "changed"...maybe catch more flies with honey than vinegar. Psychiatric transcription - average # of lines/page
I had an interview with a local MT firm that specializes in psychiatric transcription. The pay rate is .05/line for the initial training period (no timeframe given - training ends when owner feels employee is ready to work independently at home - could be 3 months) & .06/line after that. The owner mentioned that reports sometimes average 10-15 pages, but didn't mention how many lines the average page includes.
I'm trying to figure out what my pay would be. During the training period, the owner wants employees to train out of her house (20 miles from where I live/one way). With the price of gas, I'm trying to figure out if this is a good move financially. The psychiatric transcription definitely interests me, but I'm trying to figure out what my pay would be like. I'm guessing that while I'm in training, I won't receive large reports. The employer is supposed to make her decision within the week, so it's not like I've been offered the job. I just want to educate myself as to:
How many lines the average page of psychiatric transcription might have.
Does 10-15 pages sound right for the average psych report?
Does .05/line during training & .06/line after training sound fair. The owner doesn't give out pay raises or paid time off (I would be an employee, not an IC).
Does it sound reasonable to be in training for 3 months & then be able to work from home after that?
Can anyone help me or direct me to where I might be able to figure this out. I'm currently going thru MT training, so I don't currently have MT work experience. I do have 11 years administrative work experience & 7 years technical writing work experience, so I'm pretty proficient on the keyboard.

That still is not a paid line rate. If your base is $0.10 per line, it will be $0.08 cpl.
Considering other companies pay 4 or 5 cents per line for VR - you are still making out.

My first job was editing Radiology reports at a hospital... received hourly pay, though. 
The only editing job I've seen at a national was at Focus Infomatics... 4 cpl yuck. Is that the norm?

I inherited a transcription job which is great. It's not much work per week, but good for me. I do it as an individual contractor.
My question is what is the average per line wage? I tried to research it, but couldn't find any definitive info. I'm currently at 12 cents a line, but was considering asking for a raise now that I've been there over a year and before the current office manager leaves.

30 lines x 0.067 = $2.01
It all depends on the length of the reports, the software they're using and also if they pay for links.
Be very careful if the reports are really long on average, you won't make much at all.

Just starting out on my own and have been asked by a local chiropractor to handle his transcription. I don't want to undercut other sub-contractors charges but don't want to quote too high either, especially being new. How can I find out the average charge per line for chiro transcription?

I make $30 an hour. I would never transcribe for $15 an hour, for anyone.
Per page rate for legal transcription
I don't do legal, but do general transcription for a local college and charge $5.00 per page using Verdana 9 font or Times New Roman 10 font (they like it small). I do over 200 pages a month, so it works for me.

If you do 250 lines per hour at 8 cpl, you would make $20. If you did 300 lines per hour, you would make $24. The platform and many other factors would determine how many lines per hour you could do. I would not expect to be offered much more than 8 cpl for radiology, if that. Good luck.

I'm referring to employee status, not IC. You could probably get a little more per line being IC, but I'm not into IC status, so can't say for sure.

Depends on IC or employee...if employee, you'll be lucky to find 8 cpl, probably 7-7.5 cpl is average. Don't know about IC, but seems they don't offer much more than that anymore. Experience doesn't seem to play much of a role anymore either...seems they offer the same no matter how long you've been doing it. Good luck.

I agree with Patti. I also work at home and get many distractions but also have accounts that I make around $35 an hour. There is no way I could accurately log in and out on a time card and would also lose money. I am very accurate, as I proofread everything. I like the line rate but agree that companies should pay a higher line rate to more experienced transcriptionists and should be more concerned with accuracy than they are.

Is the line rate enough to
make ends meet? Do you have backup work in case their volume drops? Do you have the flexibility you need? These are all questions I would consider before doing IC.

In my opinion, 9 to 10 cpl for clinic, 10 to 12 cpl for acute care. These should even be higher if you have your own accounts (no middle man). But like some said below, it all depends on the account and also the way the lines are counted. I have over 12 years experience in all specialties and in acute care, and I have worked for 8 cpl as an IC and made more per hour than working for 11 cpl doing acute care. The 8 cpl was all by templates and I could make many, many normals, averaging about 400+ lines per hour, plus it was easy work.
Ask specific questions about the work, what kind of account, how many doctors, etc. That in my opinion is more important.

I think it is pretty common knowledge what the average line rate is for nationals, etc. Does anyone know what the national gets paid by the line? I make 8-9 cpl per gross line, and that is with a middle man, so the docs are paying 12-13 cpl per gross line.
Location is definitely a factor in pricing, but in my case, one MTSO is across the country from me and the other is local. I think that is definitely a low rate for direct office contact.

I charge 15 cpl to my neurosurgeon, only because he takes too long to remit. I do think I will offer a discount like you within 3 days of receipt, of course. But he has never balked at my rate. I almost feel guilty charging this rate.
