I am convinced that some companies will tell you the pay on one kind of line, but behind your back pay you on another, i.e. tell you it is 65 and make it 75 so in the end, you type more and make less.
In the old days, we counted our lines ourselves with Sylcount or Abacus or something. Today, most of these platforms do it for us. I know that it is easier to verify that MTs are working and making their minimum counts. The problem is that we don't have access to the line count in any given document. We have to take the word of the company, period.
I know there are honest companies out there, I have worked for them. I also recently got burned by one who seemed to expand the characters in a *line* on a weekly basis like we would not notice. Oh yes, they paid 10 cents a line and at first it was great, but as time went on the cheating on their part became obvious.
I have never come across a company that only paid for what I actually typed and not for everything on the page that my Expander put there, but that doesn't mean they don't exist.
There are MTs who make mountains of money, even subcontracting. I know that when I have worked at a place, get my counts up there and have nice fat checks, I have had MTSOs cut the amount of work they will give me or go behind my back and change how lines are counted. Hey, I earned that money and you used that line count to bill the facility so I don't want to hear about how my checks are too big!
