I, too, have the same types of constraints and experiences you described and I agree with you wholeheartedly. The one "advantage" I do have in these situations is that everthing is digital so holding tapes "hostage" isn't an issue I have to deal with. My least favorite is that the IC's would end up with more days off than I did--including all holidays and my own birthday.
