"I do MT so I can stay home with my kids" thing if we want to look professional. My kids are grown but I know even when my husband is home and sticks his head in my office and talks to me, I find myself making mistakes. I often will read back over what I was transcribing and note that just at the moment I was interrupted, I made a mistake. Doing MT correctly takes concentration. Yeah, sometimes I'm in the "zone" and happily typing along and don't miss a lick. But when I'm in the zone and am distracted, I make a mistake.
I am all for credentialing but I'd prefer it be by AHIMA, not AHDI. I've been an MT for 27 years and I'm going back to school to get a degree. I thought I was making money doing MT. But the hospitals and clinics want to be paid less, MTs want to be paid more, and between what I am paid and what I pay the subs is a margin of 5 cents per line. With that 5 cents per line I have to pay taxes, equipment (computers, software, call-in dictation systems, fax machine, C-phones, headphones, footpedals, etc. etc. etc), services (dictation system repair/maintenance contract, phone bill, dictation lines, online fax service, post office box, bank fees - monthly account fees, "business suite" fees, direct deposit fees) and pay myself.
I will probably keep my MT service as a small gig on the side for extra income once I finish school and go straight into a job that pays me twice as much as I am making from MT, with lots of benefits, time off, and RESPECT.
