Well, I guess I'll take my pay rate as a compliment then.

I graduated top of my class, and no, I didn't go to one of the "Big 3". I was actually hired 1 month before I graduated. I had 5 different job offers from various nationals and I chose one. I do not think 8 cpl is high at all. In fact, when I was doing my research on companies before I graduated, that seemed to be the going rate whether you had experience or not. I consistently type 1200+ lines a day and my QA score is 99%. I feel that 8 cpl is an appropriate rate for a newbie MT, especially when you consider that a lot of companies want to pay that for years of experience. If I only transcribed 1000 lines a day (8 hours), 5 days a week at 8 cpl, that would average out to $10.00 an hour. That is not a lot. I'm a single mom and frankly couldn't work for a company that offered less than 8 cpl.

8 cpl was an example, not my line rate; however, my guess
would be the overall charge to the client to cover overhead, etc, would vary, depending on the size of the companies (both service and client), the state/region the client is in, degree of difficulty, platforms, quantity/quality of dictators, turnaround time, how the work is to be transferred, possible retainders, competition...

I have no idea, I'm the LAST guy to get paid.

well, I guess I envy ya'll! sm
I think I envy ya'll, anyways. For me, working that much just is not possible.  Of course, I do have three kids at home, plus a husband.  So, I don't know. I'd rather spend time with them than work all the time.  But, I'm not knocking ya'll.  I say if you can do it, go for it! Maybe one day I'll be able to work that much and make the BIG bucks. My hat's off to ya!
Thank you! Guess I'll have to go back...
and try again!
Guess you'll have to come to my house for pizza!

Just finished canning 30 pints of pizza sauce from my homegrown tomatoes, peppers, basil, garlic, oregano and husband grows the onions.  Husband and his brothers own a large crop farm so can and freeze lots of veggies.  Also made salsa last week.  Almost always make my own pizza anymore because of the artificial color problem.  Haven't quite perfected it though (that pizzeria taste) but have got the crust almost "right".  Would be happy to share my recipe for dough.  Also sincere the in the shoulder if you need one- would be willing to share email address to correspond.

Ezcema is such a bummer!!  I have several nephews (husbands side of the family) with it.  Was worse for them when they were younger and has definitely gotten better now that they are older teens now.  Food allergies did seem to be a culprit for them.  Can you believe that when my daughter was totally covered all summer with hives that I went to my mother in law and asked her if anyone in the family had any allergies that she knew of because I was totally at a loss, immediately she said no without a thought.  (Couldn't be anyone in "her family").  Then after I almost killed my daughter with Amoxicillian (strep throat), Gatorade, cough syrup (cold/cough), Benadryl (hives) and Advil (fever) (all of which have red dye which she is most allergic to) and her face and throat swelled up the mother in law suddenly remembered her sister stops breathing if she has artifical food colors.  Golly gee thanks for your help. Her sister has food allergies and so do the nephews thanks for thinking of your granddaughter.

I guess you'll have to wait for the TV version then
:
Yeah, no one has ever offered me more, even for ugly ESL accounts. One rate I guess is the standard
Just make sure it's a good fair rate, especially if you do pretty complicated work. There is no way I'd do less than 8 cpl for ESL but may think about it for clinic work. It just has to be fair, which is getting tougher and tougher to get in this biz. Rates get lower but cost of living is going up and up.
I guess ya'll missed the point, but not surprising
I asked for opinions only of people who had SEEN the movie, oh well. I saw it and found it very sad, sad that people are condemned for who they love!!!
Guess they'll be in with food poisoning next time
since they ate that gangrene...bwahahahahaha
I do. I guess I'll wait a few mintues before disconnecting from the VPN
after I close out EXText.  I guess I'm just in too big of a hurry to shut down when my shift is over!
I guess we'll stay home and eat Ramen. Hadn't though about food going up too.

Thanks ... guess I'll have to check it out some time ... like I need to find more ways to goof of

Indeed I do! Thanks for the compliment.

We have two sons that actually are into doing Rap.  Not our choice by any means, but hubby built a small recording studio in the basement with a sound proof booth so the boys can do their thing without knocking mom out of her chair with the "boom boom" that goes along with it.

We've also 2 girls that sing like songbirds, but the oldest isn't interested.  The youngest, age 10, likes to sing and she dances (tap, ballet, jazz). She has just taken an interest in playing piano. We don't push her.  We just let her do her thing. She's pretty good.  GEE, I wonder where she gets that from?

thank you for the compliment

I learned to write from working for attorneys.  That and the pay were the best things from that job.  I don't think I write well at all.  I end up frustrated and embarrassed at the end of every post of mine!  I appreciate your telling me I seem to be making sense in what I am trying to say!

You too and others on this board have the same skill.  You've made some exellent points here again.  We all need to pool our talents and resources and work together.

I've got some ideas but no time to post now and I want to give them more thought as well.   But thanks for the encourgement!!!

sucks is a compliment.

You're welcome, and you deserve the compliment. (sm)
Effective writing isn't all about long, fancy words, or even about proper spelling & punctuation (as the Grammar Police would like us to believe), it's about GETTING THE POINT ACROSS. And you do that 200%.
Charge him an hourly rate. The current rate is
between $15-21/hr. according to your location. If he had to use an independent secretarial service, he would be charged much more. You can look in the Yellow Pages in your area under Secretarial Service and ask them what they charge, then charge accordingly knowing you can back it up.

When I broke my ankle, I was just grateful it wasn't the hands. Without our hands we'd be totally screwed.

I broke my right ankle slipping on ice and was lucky to have gloves on because the palm of the glove was totally torn up and my hand was okay.

Good luck and be sure to do your exercises when it is time.

I have two IC contracts right now. I recently went back to a job I had quit earlier in the year to work for the other company I am still working for.

The newer job has 80% ESLs. I transcribe OP notes primarily and I can fill in other work types as the opportunity arises. I am frustrated with this particular situation. After 6 months, I am making less money and working longer hours. I am past the learning curve and I should be doing better, at least in the number of hours I am spending doing the job. We have run out of work for 24 hrs at a time at least 5 or 6 times since December 1, and in November it was more than that. I have a friend who worked for this company as well and she was having similar difficulties. The only thing that we can figure is that they are shorting us line count some way, because after 6 months at it, it should be easier/faster/more money, but it is less and less every single pay period. It is not a nice thing to accuse a company of doing, but it SEEMS that way to us. I am fed up with being expected to type every single OP note that comes in 24/7 and meeting the 6 hr TAT for them on weekends, evenings, holidays, wee hours of the morning...

I took back a job I held for 2-1/2 yrs. The team leader has changed and this gal thinks that I should be on call 24/7 for whenever she has work. I might have some at 7 a.m., or perhaps not until 6 p.m. or later. I can't plan my personal life and between these two IC situations, I find that I am not eating on a daily basis, not showering on a daily basis and not sleeping more than 3 or 4 hours at a time. I have lost weight and I don't feel very well. I woke up today with a rip roaring head cold (my first in nearly 8 yrs) and it has already moved to bronchitis and I am expecting pneumonia by the weekend because I develop it very easily. I already have deep pain in my back.

Yes, I should call in sick tomorrow, but I really can't take the fallout. The job I took back I am covering for another gal who wanted vacation over the holidays and if I have to call in sick, the team leader will call me and pitch a fit about how this is my responsibility. It IS my responsibility, I did say I would do it, and I will do it, despite being quite ill. In the past, when I worked for this company, they would not allow me to call in sick for a "cold" without a doctor's note. I worked through many illnesses with them and only called in sick when I developed West Nile Fever and while I was sick for over a month, I only called for my last 12 reports one day when I could no longer see the computer screen because my head hurt.

The problem is that yes, many MTs lack work ethic. They don't take their responsibility seriously. This is not a work as you please career, not even for an IC. I can see the MTSO's point of view, I truly can. Like finding experienced, reliable and capable MTs, for the MTs who are these things, finding a company will treat you like a human being is equally difficult. I sit here, feeling lousy and like I am an utter slave labor with no consideration whatsoever. I know that my work needs to be done, but when I am this sick it is better that someone else do it for the sake of the work, for accuracy and for speed of getting it out. I know that I am needed, but to be the MT these companies need me to be, I also need to look after my own health.

I will also mention that when I have asked for vacation, I have been approved for the time, but the MTSO queues up my work and calls me then I am not on the system getting it done. I have told them I had been approved for time off, but the MTSO didn't schedule anyone to cover for me and I am told to get on work, vacation or no, if I want to keep my job.

Thus, I work 24/7/365 and have for years. I work sick, I work when I am in pain (I have an AI disorder), I work exhausted from staying up all night covering for others who are allowed to call in sick and have vacations when I can't have either. I work having no health insurance and not being able to afford the $125 a month to buy some with a high copay so I can see a doctor. I work without breaks for breakfast, lunch or dinner and I sometimes come close to having an accident because if I leave my desk to go to the little girls' room I get nasty calls about where I am at and what I am doing.

Many MTs are mistreated, and I am one of them.
ME rate 80% of baseline MT rate
are you happy with the 20% cut to do ME work or are you going to just do MT work (which will be those dictators that ASR can't do) at your baseline rate?
Cross off old rate, put in your new rate, (nt)

Employee rate/IC rate......
I work at home for a hospital account that I make .11 cpl on 60-character line. I also do IC work for a clinic where I make .14 cpl. I am from Missouri.
If it's different for each report, my guess (only a guess)
would be no. I think the macro would work if it was the same each time, but not sure if it will if the documents are different each time.
Tell him you'll give him your macros if he'll give you his Lexus, his ski cabin, and (nm)

Control. I'll still get OT though. And you'll
still sit and complain!

I'll join you on that one, I'll be 58

You already charge a fairly low line rate, but I'd definitely cut it to keep the account.  JMO

DQS pay rate
Hold onto your hat, honey, it's bad. Real bad. I used to type 500 lph, now barely 120 lph...This depends on wether or not you're used to straight line or character count. Rememeber, your word Expander won't work, no headers, no footers, no signature line, no CC's. AND, to top it off --- you won't get paid for spaces --
my pay is now less than 1/4 and they're making me statutory w/no benefits for me or my child. Jumping ship. New job starts Monday.
Going rate
Depends on area, location, what is your experience, what kind of account, whether or not you pick up and deliver, etc.  Can vary from 10 cpl to 15 cpl.  What do you think you are worth?
Could you the rate...sm

I am one of the few that get paid per minute of dictation.  Could you tell me what your rate is and if IC or employee and what area.  Thanks.

Pay rate?
Was there every a time that MTs got paid per word rather than line? If so, why did it change?
As an IC you should set the rate,

You will need to talk to them and tell them you need to raise your rates.  They may not be willing to accept it though.

Welcome to the wonderful world of an IC MT.

What is the going rate

I have someone who wants me to retype a book for them.  Does anyone have any idea how much I should charge for this?  by the page?  line?  TIA!

Does anybody know what the going rate
per line is for a private account in the Philadelphila, PA area?
same rate
I do not charge extra for STAT's unless I have to make another trip to deliver it.  If I fax it over same rate applies.   I don't understand your question about charging extra if they have more minutes than usual.  Unless you have only hired on for so many minutes, then perhaps you could charge more.  My accounts have been heavier than usual this past month but I feel it all evens out for when the months are light and so I take it when I can get it.   I am a bit unusual but my accounts are good to me and I don't like to nit pick them to death with extra charges for this and that.  They work with me when I am down and cannot adhere to the 24 TAT and so if they need a STAT on a patient going to surgery I just do it and fax it over.  I have said it before and will say it again, I might bend over backwards for them sometimes (all 4 accounts) but they do the same for me so we just work together to get the job done.   When I hear the horror stories on here about how some are treated -- I just thank the Lord for my accounts.     Patti
Going rate for QA
What's the going rate for a QA person? I'm getting paid per line of QA that I do. Thanks!
7-8 cpl is the going rate.
You'd probably be better off to get your own accounts unless you are in dire need of medical benefits.  Even then from what I've read on these boards the premium is really expensive.  Good luck in your search.
If you are IC -- you set the rate
It is hard and scary as you often wonder that they will take it away from you but you have to have confidence in yourself.  Again, I would try to figure out what I make per hour or cpl and go from there.  See how many lines you can do, and so on.  Then compare monthly salary versus production and see how you come out.  Perhaps just switching over to a gross cpl to show him that you only want him to pay you for the work that is produced no matter how long it takes will work for you.  And that alone could be a raise for you - who knows or at least let you know that what you are making is not that bad as you do get paid for when times are slow or he is off.  Production rates will not pay you for when he is off.  Show him you are putting in more hours than two years ago, producing more work, etc. and so you must raise your rates to such and such.  Good luck.
Rate
I have 6 years of experience as an MT. Eight cents seems to be the going rate but personally I would like to see MT's with more experience being offered more like 10 cents a line.
rate
Alot of companies just pay one flat rate no matter what type of work type it is. Some companies may pay a little more for ESL's but no more for different work types. Its all the same rate.
rate of pay

$50 per recorded hour of straight (non-medical transcription).. Is this low, high, or in the ballpark?  I am so used to being paid by the line for medical transcription, this being paid by the dictated hour kind of threw me for a loop.

rate
Figure out what your average line rate is per hour and charge them that. Don't sell yourself short.
rate of pay

Thank you...  The job description was rather vague, typing up conferences or interviews..  They said $50 for standard dictation and that it goes up from there for harder dictations..  I think I will pass..

Going rate
I was just wondering what the going rate is that companies are charging their clients?  Any help would be appreciated!
Going rate
I was just wondering what the going rate is for transcription per hour.  I currently work for a national company and get paid by the line, but a friend of mine wants me to do some transcription for him and I don't know what to charge.  This is not medical stuff, rather educational/training.  He doesn't want me to short-change myself, but I don't want to over charge him either.  Any ideas?
