We're in CA and have a lot of year-round schools. I like it better than the traditional schedule.

My husband took over many of the traditional SM
duties at our house. My earning power was so much greater than his that it made sense. He turned into a kick-heinie cook!
I'd lean more towards traditional etiquette as well. sm
I think it's tacky. I recently received an invitation that had a printed card for a Penney's registry inside and thought it was inappropriate. Taking calls and answering questions are all just part of being the bride - just enjoy it! Congratulations!
It's both the schools and co.'s fault. Schools are trying to kick em' out as soon as they
"graduate" and companies are very willing to hire anyone who says "they went to this school or that." I know. I've been there as a former instructor.

I truly believe that not everyone has what it takes to become a good MT. And I mean good. You absolutely cannot guess on anything - and I would stress this over and over to my students at all times. You have to know how to spell, and you have to have basic, or beyond basic, grammar knowledge.

My classes would normally start out at 15 to 17. And by the end of the first week it would go down to about 10. And then after that I would graduate around 8 or so. I would tell them straightforward that this job entails - the skills you must have to do this work - and I probably did turn a few of them away. But when they had it, and I knew they could do this work (I could usually tell by the first 5 papers they turned in) then I would encourage them over and over. I would call them, meet with them, and tell them to stick it out, and that I thought they had found their "spot" in life....That's what my MT instructor did for me many years ago and I am so grateful for her.

I know these gals and guys want to be at home with their young ones - hey, I do too! But as an editor also, I believe that some are just not cut out for this.

Also, I find acute care a lot less challenging than actual clinic work! I have been editing clinic work here lately and boy have I found that to be challenging. It is very, very specific. If they can do clinic work no problem, then they should train on acute care too.

Just my humble opinion.

Oh, as for VR. No, newbies cannot do that right now. You need people with editing background who know thousands upon thousands of words to edit VR. I don't think schools care about training them for VR - just graduate them with the basic knowledge and get a job doing clinic work! Yeah, if it were that easy!
Our family enjoys our traditional lasagna Christmas dinner; less fuss, more fun. nm

You're behaving like a pouting 4-year-old
Somebody is doing something you can't so you want to stir up crap? And, had you bothered to read what you posted, they're actually okay with working offsite if you take appropriate security risks...they specifically mention logging out before leaving the computer unattended. But mommy is still very proud of her little playa-hayta.
Well, ya can't make $50k a year unless you're willing to give up your life and be chained to S

you PC 12+ hours a day.  I can't recommend any particular school as I didn't go to one of the "online" schools.  I learned in an actual classroom which I recommend over any of these online schools.  Another thing I recommend is working in an office for at least six months, but more like a year, because there is a gigantic learning curve once you actually get a job.  There are just things that schools can't or don't teach, things that can only be learned on the job from other MTs who have been doing it longer than you.

Don't get me wrong.  It's great to be able to work from home.  Personally, I don't think newbies should be allowed to work at home right out of the gait.  There is some much they don't know.  They need help.  They need to be able to ask questions and one of the best things about working in the office as a newbie, is being able to ask the seasoned MT next to you to listen to something for you.

Having said all that, I think MT is slowly dying.  It's become difficult to make a decent living in this profession.  I'm one of the few lucky ones.  I work at-home for a hospital.  I get paid hourly, get incentive, and have all the benefits of being a FT employee.  Oh, and they can't take my benefits away if I don't make my quota.

You can't support a family on 7 or 8 cpl or even 9 cpl when the dictation is the crap they won't send to India.  I would suggest finding another profession.  The trend in medical coding is that all coders will be working from home soon what with everyone going to the Electronic Medical Record.  I would go into coding.  You may end up working in the office for a while, but I don't see coding being outsourced to India any time soon.

Good Luck.

AAMT ADHI orwhatever they're calling themselves this year...
AAMT ADHI (or whatever they're calling themselves this year) is a conglomerate out to make money ~ like any other business.  They lost sight of the basis for their existence long ago. I was a paid member (as were many MTs) until I realized what a waste of my hard-earned money it was. Ultimately, instead of helping the MT they just want to make a sale.
round up also
Just noticed that they also round up if it is .50 or above. So maybe this evens things out.
oh the QA merry-go-round!

I just had a go-round with my 11yo this morning
She has been told more than once, no makeup - yet there she was this morning wearing eye makeup.  I took it off her myself, which she did not like at all.  Lip gloss I can live with but the rest will have to wait.  She tells me "third graders at school wear makeup," and "the school lets us," to which I replied, 'their mother is not your mother, the school is not your mother, and you are not wearing makeup - end of discussion.'  Don't know if you all have the problem with your young daughters trying to "push your buttons" like ours does (by this I mean she says/does things purposely to get a rise out of my husband or me, but mostly me).  I have caught onto this manipulativeness, and now when it happens I remind myself I am the one in control, that I need to stay calm, and then I mete out the circumstances.  Funny, but my calmness actually seems to infuriate her!  Apropos, don't you think?
those round bulbous things

I think you'll find that a great many breast augmentation procedures (you'll see them all through the www.implantinfo.com website) have that particular appearance. Go back and choose to look at the pictures from physicians rather than patients.

I think cost has a lot to do with it. The more expensive the procedure, the greater the likelihood of a more natural appearance.

I have a Dell Inspiron and there is a round

hole in the back just like they have on a desktop.  I think it is a PS2.   Mine has a picture of a mouse and keyboard underneath the hole.   The foot pedal depends on what kind it is.  I use a game port but don't have a game port so have to use an adaptor to convert it to a USB.  I have a serial port which is 9-pin and it is right side my keyboard connection.

To "Typed in the USA," here's your chance to round up the other MTs!
I know there were many other MTs who expressed desire to form a new company - what a coinky dink that someone needs an MTSO with a group of MTs to take 5000 lines a day! Go for it :)

Oh...and email me if you need another gal :)
Speak for yourself. Her books go in the round file

has done nothing for transcription as far as I can see.

I learned proper grammar in school.  I learned how to type in typing class.  I follow the directions and policies of the company I'm working for at any given time.

That's about all a person needs.  The world sure doesn't need Tessier.  After all these years what did she ever do for MT?

I know I have no love lost for AAMT and those people.  They are drawing a salary for what??  Why am I sitting here making less in 2005 than I did in 1995?  And I am being offered even less on MQ's new platform?

Beats me. And how come sometimes they are those round bulbuous things?

Would you make a 60 mile round trip every day
I have been driving back and fourth to a hospital for over a year.   It is 30 miles away.  I have to put two small children in daycare close to my home because it is more affordable then the ones close to where I work.  This is another issue.  If I have to take them to the doctor or if they have anything going on at the daycare that I can attend well, I have to take a full day off.  The pay at this hospital is only 9 cpl so the pay is not what is really keeping me it is the bennies.  $65/month covers my kids and I.  It is excellent coverage too.  We also have a 401k plan where they match.  We also have flex spending, PTO which is about used up because we keep running out of work.  We are only allowed to get sick 5 times a year, that includes family too if we have to take off.   I have asked to work at home because they have home MTs.  I used to be one of them but they moved me in house they did not like my slow internet connection.  Now that we have cable internet available I asked if can go back home and they seem to give me the run around like it is either "not in their budget" or “maybe in a month or two” but that never comes.  These outsourcing companies keep dancing around.  I just really want to be back home closer to my kids and so I can eat lunch with my husband again.  I do know that any job I get there will be pitfalls.  I am just afraid of jumping from the frying pan into the fire.
Is this for a conference, round-table discussion, or what? nm

Dinner help! I have a beef round rump roast.. help!
any interesting ideas?
Doesn't sound round, makes no sense.

drove 80 miles round trip to work for $5/hr...sm

sitting in a metal folding chair at a folding banquet table, banging away on a Selectric in a room full of smokers. This was a service that would UPS cassette tapes out to your home when you started working from home. Obviously this was 25 years ago. After two weeks, the owner let me go and told me he couldn't make money off of me, even at $5/hour. But then I applied at the hospital for a radiology transcription position (because now I had experience!) and they hired me because I was the only one who would work on Saturdays. When I consider what I had to go through to break into the field, makes me laugh when I see newbies fresh out of school with no experience asking for 6 cents a line to work from home...I guess just understand you do what you have to do to break into the field. That goes for every job that is hard to get into.

I have to say I am just sick over the recent round of school violence

My daughter's Middle School implemented some new safety measures this year. Visitors have to be "buzzed in" and when the kids go from building to building they must use their ID cards to enter the doors.

But one day my daughter forgot her clarinet and my husband took it to her. We are talking about a "country-boy" looking man carrying a small black case. A teacher and her class was exiting the main building and the teacher actually held the door for my husband to enter as they were exiting. She had no idea who he was. Scary.

Anyway, it seems the Amish shooter targeted that school so he could avoid the security measures that have been established in most schools in recent years.

My heart goes out to the families who lost and for those sitting at the bedside of the remaining girls. I hope and pray they will recover.

Thanks for letting me ramble. This has really been on my mind a lot lately

Sorry about typos, sheesh...been sick and today down for round 3 sm
of cold, bronchitis and mild pneumonia. Every time I get better I start in from the beginning with this illness! This is why I have settled for a significantly lower line rate to go where there are affordable benefits like health insurance so I can treat these things instead of being sick for over a month now and can't afford to go to the doctor because I can't work at my usual level. Goodness me.

best schools
What are the best online schools that will guarantee a job? Are there any under $2000? Thanks.
top 3 schools
I know this has been posted, but doggone if I can find in the archives.  Friend looking into MT training.  What are the top 3 schools?  Thanks Karen
Top 3 MT schools
I just read about this and they are on the www.aamt.org web site--they are:
M-Tec, Andrews & CareerStep.
Some schools
I graduated from M-Tec. I am constantly getting e-mails for job opportunities from them even 2 years later. Andrews is also good and there is a third one that is mentioned here a lot that I always forget the name of. With any of these schools, you should be able to get an entry-level job with a national company. Whether your local doctors/hospitals feel the same way is questionable. My locals weren't impressed with my online education.

Rates: Avg for newbs is 6 to 7 cpl. Take that times 1200 lines for an average wage. Double it for an upper estimate. Even for experienced transcriptionists, it is really topping out at 8-9 cpl max. And this rate will probably continue to go down in the coming years, just as difficulty of the dictation goes up. (The easy stuff really is going to EMR/VR and overseas.

Remember you will probably be an IC so will have to pay all your own taxes and equipment. Just because you are considered an independent contractor, don't expect to be treated like one by a transcription service. Most want you to log in and log out during certain specified hours of the day, and they might not be the best hours for you. Most will expect you work at least 1 weekend day every week as well and probably even holidays (don't expect a higher rate either).
Top 3 schools
I agree with you.  I wished I had known about the top 3 schools.  My husband and I decided to go with a non-accredited school that promised a job.  Well, there were problems in the very beginning.  After 15 months, I quit.  Now, because I did not go to an accredited school, it is very hard to find a job.
Schools
If you go to either of these schools you will be prepared and you will be able to get a job when you finish:

Andrews
M-Tec.

Otherwise, you're right; getting that first job is a bear.
Schools

I am looking for a school that provides refresher courses for medical transcriptionists who have not worked at this type work for long periods of time.  I do not feel that someone who has done this type work in the past for several years and is still working in a hospital doing administrative or clerical work should need to take a complete course.  Replies will be appreciated.

Schools
Andrews or M-TEC. I do QA (and graduated from Andrews). I just finished editing a newbie's work who took a different course. Had I done work like that when at Andrews, they never would have let me graduate, let alone have given a recommendation. The work was terrible. Obviously this newbie had not had much in the way of ear training, let alone any basic grammar. I could handle mistakes if it was a matter of simple style issues, i.e., learning specifics for an account, but mistaking "cranial" for "perineal" just did it for me. Sorry for the vent, but if you're going to spend big bucks, make sure you can do the job when you're done. JMHO.
schools
I need help deciding which MT school to use?  I am debating Career Step, Mtecinc and Andrews?  I want to be sure I make the right decision.
Schools and such...sm
OTJ training seems to be very rare these days, as I found out when researching this field.  A school with an excellent reputation is a must for a newbie wanting to work right away--Andrews School and M-Tec are the top 2 that national employers recognize.  Look around here on the New MT/Student board for some of the questions about those schools.  All I can say is make sure she does her research extremely well before starting on this path; talk to the directors at the above schools; ask a lot of questions--it will save a lot of frustration and money in the end.  Good luck!
Top schools, etc...sm
The top 2 schools that potential national at-home employers will recognize are Andrews School and M-TEC. It was a difficult choice between the 2, but I went with M-TEC. I believe that both have payment plans, and I was able to get a Sallie Mae (SLM) loan for M-TEC. Talk to all the schools that make your short list. They can give you an idea about the job market, their placement rates after graduation, average length of coursework, and any other questions you can think of. Don't be afraid to pester them! :)
