VR reports get paid VR rate whether I straight type or not.

I have just gotten to the point where on certain docs I know their VR sucks, so I straight type because it ends up being faster. It sucks, but that is the way the business is now a days, so I don't have much of a choice. I need a job, and I like where I am at, so don't like to speak up too much because the are really pushing the VR.

It depends where you work and what your straight rate is.
I make 75% of my straight rate for VR. This is the highest I have seen. It seems like most seem to offer 50% of straight. DON'T accept that. It is way too low. I don't produce that much more with VR than I did with straight. I am on an account though that is newer to VR, so some adjustments are still being made. Unfortunately even with VR, I probably just give up and straight transcribe half of my VR work that I am getting. It is way faster than trying to fix every other word of an entire report.
You don't get paid an hourly rate you get paid by line - sm
so because of how you are paid (not an hourly rate) you don't get OT, especially if you are an IC.
Getting paid only for STRAIGHT TYPING
My company set me up to work from home - - - I am new at this and confused and am need of imput from others in the field. Currently I get pain 8 cents per line. I have a quota of 7,000+ lines a week - -however the computer I have been set up with does not enable me to add programs (if I wanted to add a word expansion program) and, interestingly, the ability to set up macros in MS Word has been disabled.
With that said - - - For example, I will type a new consult on a patient that ends up being 4 pages in length. I want to "work smarter and not harder" (who doesn't) so I incorporate word Expanders that I have in MS Word Auto Text as well as an Auto Text "intial office visit" outline which includes the doctor's "normal" exam. All I have to do are make any necessary changes with each individual patient. We use a nationally known dictation program/softwear which enables me to go to a "statistics" screen to see the line count for each document I have typed. I have been finding, however, that on these 4 page consults, I am only being credited for 60 lines or so - - - aren't there 65 lines PER PAGE - - -why is it not 4 times that amount?? Looks like I am only getting paid for STRAIGHT TYPING, not for the total line count of the end product.
If I can't understand a word straight to QA that is what they get paid for.

If a company has you type on straight Word..
is there any way to put your own Expander software with that and if so, what is recommended. I have always had the company supply the software including expanders, but wondered if there is a way to use these in Microsoft Word. Thanks for any help!!!
I type straight through, then run spell-check,
then go back and proofread. Even if I sort of "speed-read", it's amazing the silly mistakes you can find that spell-check doesn't! Words left out, portions of a sentence typed twice (which spell check won't cover like it does double words), and accidental "macro misfires". (Those can be very FUNNY when caught, would be EMBARRASSING if they went through.) Proofing slows me down, but not as much as having to go back and correct the entire report does.
RE: I used to work for Freedom Type - VERY nice people - didn't do VR, just straight typing (nm)

rate for stat reports
Hey, does anyone on here charge extra for stat reports. I receive work in the evenings and the doctors need some stats done before the next morning for surgery. I wanted to know what the going rate for stats are, as I have to stop what I am doing, work in the evenings, plus, they are on tapes so I have to search the entire tapes looking for the stat reports to type. It is very time consuming and wondered if anyone charges extra for those, more per line, or a flat rate, etc. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
rate for STAT reports after hours
I currently work for a group doing transcription all day as an IC. I am delivered my work at night by the office for the next day's work. But, often they have a need for me to do STAT reports that night for surgery the next morning. I work all day full time for them and then have these to do in the evenings too. They also use tapes still and I have to spend and hour or two searching the tapes looking for the dictation to transcribe. It is so frustrating and time consuming on my part and I am making NOTHING for the time I am spending on this, 2-4 bucks tops for an hour or two of work. I just wondered if anyone knew of a good line rate, flat rate, etc. to charge for this turnaround time and the time I have to waste searching through these tapes!!!!! They will not go digital, which would be so much better. Any thoughts???? Thanks in advance.
To not have to type ER reports any more. Want
more of anything except ER notes. Yuk!
add to that ASR, getting paid 1/2 for basically re-typing reports! nm
xx
I would much rather do ME, (that is, if it paid the same line rate) sm
Which it does not, so I guess I will be sticking with MT, at least until I don't have a choice.
Can any of you MTs who type operative reports tell me
what are some good websites to look for spellings of surgical terminology, instruments, equipment, etc.? Much appreciated!!!
depends on what type of reports.....
130-160 per 8 hours, if typing combinations of everything; i.e. MRI, CT, nuclear medicine, fluoro, x-rays, angiograms, etc.
depends on type of reports sm
do not sign on to do MRIs, CTs paid by the report, you'll lose money big time.
What type of reports do you get the most lines on?...
I was wondering if you had to choose, which type of reports would you want to do exclusively that would net you the most lines, of course other than a wonderful account with normals on every report .
We get paid $1.10 for radiology reports and my supervisor transcribes also sm
she pick all the easy doctors. How I know this is because if she doesn't finish them all she says "I have work that I couldn't finish I need someone to finish up." They are all the same doc no more than 3 lines or normals.
in 1994 I typed IME reports and was paid $5.00 per page, wish I had that now!
nm
If you are being paid per report for MRI's and CT's, what is a good rate? nm
:O)
Thanks, Mardi. My base rate is .085, so the most I am paid . . .
is .095 a line, whether it be 16,000 or 20,000 lines per pay period. I try to get 1800-2000 lines a day, or 9000-10,000 lines a week. This is for employee status, 1st shift, acute care, with 15+ years' experience.
I have seen so many job listings only requiring 5000-6000 lines a week and a line rate of .07-.09, and figured my .095/line was about average. If I can do better than this, please let me know!!!
I just assumed the low line requirements were due to the fact that anything more than that was impossible, whether it be due to ESL dictators, complicated platform, or just the lack of work. I would love to know of any MTSOs that can provide enough work for my production level with a better line rate. Thanks again!!
I think it probably depends on the dictators and type of reports.
Personally, I think it depends on the dictator, how familiar you are with the specialty, and if there are expansions/normals that can be used.
For argument sake, lets compare $1.15 per minute to 9 cents a line, if it takes someone 1 hour to transcribe 10 minutes of dictation.
If you have a slow dictator who reads the chart, changes their mind every other sentence, or uses terms/equipment that you have to constantly research, and at the end of the hour, you only have 100 lines typed, then you are ahead of the game. You earned $11.50 that hour.
10 minutes x $1.15 (typed in 1 hour) = $11.50 per hour.
100 lines x 9 cents per line (typed in 1 hour) = $9.00 per hour.
BUT, if you have a great dictator who knows what they want to say, are organized, normals or a great set of expansions are used, you never have to stop to look anything up, and in the end, you have typed 200 lines, that is a whole different story. You could have made $18.00 an hour.
10 minutes x $1.15 (typed in 1 hour) = $11.50 per hour.
200 lines x 9 cents per line (typed in 1 hour) = $18.00 per hour.
So in my opinion, unless you can talk to other MTs with the company doing the same work, there is no way to know in advance if you will be making more or less by being paid by the minute as opposed to by the line.
Please update us after you have worked for awhile and let us know how things are going. GOOD LUCK.
I tend to proof my reports as I type,
during pauses in dictation I read the paragraphs above and also while spellchecking. Unless it is a difficult report, I do not relisten.
You need to charge for this extra service. Stat reports should be charged at a higher rate or per r
Never lose money. I have unlimited long distance and when my docs what things faxed, etc, I charge them per report to fax the document as well as charging them to transcribe it.
could be short reports and getting paid for headers/footers in a 10-hour day.

I type fire claims/investigation reports
It's really easy work and pays pretty good. It's also nice to have a break from medical, but some of the reports are really sad to type. I do the work for a local fire chief that has a side business and he investigates a lot of car accidents when the car catches on fire. A lot of times there are fatalities involved, and they usually involve children too. They can get pretty gruesome when they go into detail though. I get paid by the page and most of the time I type depo summaries, which are just highlighted parts of the deposition that I type into a summarized report. I actually put an ad in the local paper for transcription work and got this account. It's only about $400/month, but I do MT part time too.
2 hr 30 min stat psych eval -- MD paid double rate :) NM
x
I seriously doubt that type of work is as complex as medical reports.
nm
I think you would have to charge an hourly rate for this type of work.
LOVE teaching hospitals and long-winded reports. Less ADT time which I'm not paid for.
Hate filling in ADT screens w/ searches just to do a one minute report.
Why does that bother you? You're getting paid to type
what is dictated. What does it matter if it is "Mrs. Smith" in paragraph 1, "Ethel" in paragraph 3, or "the patient" in the recommendations? LOLOLOL
I too am not paid by the line and I do NOT type. I do QA. There is a reason for QA because
MT has taken a toll on my body. Some companies will pull you in there as QA and then try to have you transcribe...if you do it once for them, they will ask you all the time.
Now, as far as pay....$15.50 to $16 is average for non-CMT employee per hour.
Line pay I have paid no attention to because any company that has true QA will not pay by the line. Quality means quality all the way.
Thanks for your input. We type regular medical reports in Meditech and radiology in Cerner. SM
I am really considering presenting the idea that we measure productivity on minutes transcribed instead of lines. I don't know if management will go for it, but it seems like the best scenario considering all the trouble we've had.
Thanks again!
Acute care work is operative reports, consultations, H&Ps, emergency room, DS basically the type of
dictation found in a hospital setting as opposed to a clinic setting in which you just type office notes and minor procedures.
If you submit your reports on time and correctly, you get paid correctly. Pay has been on sm
time for 2 years now. 1st and 15th for employees, 2nd and 16th for ICs. If it falls on a weekend or holiday, it posts the next business day.
By the way, there is no Sophie on radiology at Keystrokes. Must be a troll.
Radiology transcription, what type of reports are considered radiology
I have lot of experience with everything and I would like to know what exactly is considered radiology so I know if I qualify for that type of work? I've had many types that I think qualify for radiology.
For QA consulting I'm paid per hour; QA instructing (college) paid salary, QA editing paid per li
I am an IC and work for two different MTSOs as well as instruct at a business college.
That still is not a paid line rate. If your base is $0.10 per line, it will be $0.08 cpl.
Considering other companies pay 4 or 5 cents per line for VR - you are still making out.
The MR reports were being filed. Referring physicians/medical care providers reports were not.
This is a hospital radiology department with in-house MTs and a clerk who is in charge of the report distribution.
The two sentence normal reports will balance out the 3 page reports.
I am Wendy too
Charge him an hourly rate. The current rate is
between $15-21/hr. according to your location. If he had to use an independent secretarial service, he would be charged much more. You can look in the Yellow Pages in your area under Secretarial Service and ask them what they charge, then charge accordingly knowing you can back it up.
if mt paid 9, editor paid 4 or 5...how can company charge 14 and make it..sm
I know the going rate in our area is 14 cents per line. As MTs most companies here pay us 8 or 9 cents a line. Now add in the Editor rate at 4 or 5 per line..you are paying OUT more than you can charge a line. How would companies stay in biz?
Unless all work is sent by the company overseas at pennies per line, this would not pay for a company.
just curious how this works out
But how much are the US EDs gonna be paid? Typically this work is paid at 2-3 cpl. nm
:+
I would move on. I think it is so unfair not to be paid for spaces! I think we should get paid
per keystroke, but that'll never happen. I just think that these national companies are going to keep finding ways to cheat us. I found a job working for a hospital as an employee, paid hourly plus incentive, and they let us expand everything! Somebody's gonna have to kill me to make me give up this job. I will never go back to the national's again.
I feel for you though. I know that for us MTs those good jobs are few and far between and some have little choice but to work for the nationals. I just happened to luck into the job I have now. I just applied at the right time.
Good luck to you whatever you decide.
If those companies paid a fair wage, and paid more
all came out equal, people wouldn't feel the need to try to make up the deficit by going for the good stuff. I actually prefer the harder, juicier reports. But I can't make a living doing only that, because the pay is not commensurate with the difficulty. So even though I prefer not to, sometimes I have to pick up some of the easier, more boring 'line-o-matic' reports just to make ends meet. Tell your MTSO to make it work their while, and MTs will stop taking all the easy work away that you obviously would prefer to keep for yourself.
You wont show UE being paid because it is employer paid -
the employee will never have to pay this.
don't type double spaces. Type single. Then no one will be cheated.
x
I can type with wine, can't type with coffee, though...too jittery.
x
That is, type the code above before and after what you want bolded in the text-to-type box. nm
nm
What you "should" be paid and what you "are" paid
sadly are two very different things. Good luck on demanding more..because someone else will just come along and take it for what they offer and they know it.
Your English teacher does not do medical reports. This is for medical reports.
.
For me it isn't an account type but a dictator type ...
and that would be oriental. An oriental dictator (hahaha, that kind of sounds funny...hahaha) is the most challenging for me.
