If you work for a national, you don't want Vista.
Make sure you have plenty of USB ports for pedals, mouse, keyboard and other toys. PS/2 ports will be phased out in the next couple of years and some devices won't run with a USB hub. I work on my laptop and I use a peripheral keyboard (PS/2 cuz I am short of USBs) and USB mouse because they are easier to use and easier on your body.
As far as guts...a wireless is nice, but not for MT. You'll want a fast Pentium processor at least a Pentium III, 512 RAM if not more, a SoundBlaster (I don't have one in mine and I wish I did), a headphone jack that will fit your MT headphones and plenty of disk space.
I personally bought mine used in 2006. It has a floppy drive in it! LOL It has infrared, wireless, dialup AND Ethernet connections in it. I only have 2 USB ports and 1 PS/2 port. I have a game port and I have used it for my ancient VoiceWav pedal. It has 512 RAM and I upgraded it to XP Pro. The only "toy" I got on it was a DVD player with CD burner. I can take it to bed, prop it next to me and watch DVDs, which I like because I only have one DVD player and that is not in the bedroom.
It should also be noted that SOME of the platforms used in this business are NOT supported on a laptop. Extext is one of them, Dictaphone won't support it if it is installed on a laptop. If something isn't right, this makes it harder to fix.

Someone there may be able to help you. Other than copying the macros from WP document into Word document and then creating the macro again, I can not think of a way to do it, though there probably is a way.

We have not much to fear from overseas, in my opinion, compared to the technology being created every day to reach the goal of the 'standardized text' paperless record (EHR - electronic health record).
No more 'free text' or dictation in the future.
Same for billing/coding, which will be done automatically with mobile point-of-care hand-held PCs.
Certainly, there will still be editors, but I can not get any solid information as to how this technology will affect MTs. Will be still be needed, if so, in what capacity.
I keep hearing we should be open to being trained in the new technologies that are coming, but hey, what ARE they, and who will train us?
The only thing AAMT seems to be suggesting/promoting, is (what will make them a lot of money) for certifying MTs...what good is that going to do us?
I would gladly train and learn new technology so I can 'stay in the game,' but how, what, where, who pays, when? What will it be, what do I have to do?
I have E'd several people, including Ms. Tessier herself, and have not gotten any kind of response, period.
Heck with being certified, tell me how I can keep my job for the next decade before I can retire and MT as we know it is extinct!

I get my work from an FTP site that they load the work to, however I don't have pool work so to
speak, but I tell them how many minutes a day I want. The work is generally put in my box by 5 pm every day, then I have until 10 am the following day for some priority work, or 3:30 pm for the rest, so TAT is not too bad. I would like to work less at night though, but I working on that. My downside is I do not get the same dictators day to day, there are a few I do on a semi-regular basis though, some generate great lines but take longer to do that other doc's and are not "money-makers", I also do not get paid for spaces so that hurts a bit too. This is WP5.1 too.....so very antiquated but that is what the hospital uses, so not much choice there. But I understand what you mean about the C-phone. I was just doing another job with C-phone recently...they incidentally did not tell me how to get off of the system, which was very simple. I'd finish a job, then hit stop and hangup if I wanted to get off or quit working. That is what you need to do if you want to sleep, eat, etc. Don't feel guilty, do what you signed up for, believe me they watch the pools and will get others to do the work you don't finish. If they get on your case remind them that you are only PT and only want 500 lines a day, etc. It's not worth killing yourself over. Good Luck. 
Anyone out there deliver newspapers?
Just wondering if I'm the only crazy fool. My younger son took on a paper route and then lost interest. I helped him with it for a while. My older son used to do the same route and it became available again.
I'd been trying to get motivated to walk in the morning and would always turn the alarm off. When I helped my younger son, I saw him counting his cash and thought "okay, I walk for an hour every morning and make $85.00 or more a week while I'm doing this."
Only drawback is that it is 7 days a week 364 days a year (no paper at Christmas) and you have to be up at 4:30 a.m. When my older son did the route, he would get over $500 in Christmas tips.
Maybe I'm trying to convince myself to keep it up? I do know that I feel great and am in much better shape than I was even a few weeks ago.

Why are people in expensive cars waiting in line for free stuff then? There are 2,800 people staying in shelters that NEED to be helped for truly being victims of the storm rather than for being "victims" of lack of planning or preparedness. Believe me, we're not without compassion. We do care. However, people 50 or 100 years ago didn't sit back on their laurels waiting for others to do for them.

I do approximately one hour each morning (walking). This past week I made $160 tax free for 7 hours of "exercise." :)
My theory is why get up early and walk the dog when you can walk the dog and make money while you're at it.
My sister and her husband did a motor route together and made $500+ a week.
And the Christmas tips? CHA CHING!!! I made almost $600 last year with 65 customers. My sister and her husband made close to $2000.00.
Outsourcing DMV story hit OC newspapers and everyone was outraged about losing jobs and private info
After the outrage regarding private information and loss of jobs concerning a California DMV sending their data entry to Mexico, this practice was stopped thanks to a radio show and media attention. We as transcriptionists have more info than DMV not to mention all the countless jobs going overseas. Where is the outrage on this when we need it?
MT's can take the work right off the ftp site
and you can pick and choose which job types each Transcriptionist is allowed to work on, anywhere from 1 to 9. You also can delineate which ones have QA priveleges and the files are marked Completed or for QA so you know the status. Until they are marked completed, the docs can't download the completed work back. So you don't route the work to the MT's, they can get it themselves.
Who is this Dixie on another MT site that tries to get everyone to work for MQ by telling them how
great everything is. Pity them depending on the office they get into and unfortunately even the good offices will close soon as per the MQ plan.

My foot pedal is a 15 pin foot pedal that is plugged into the joy-stick port on my tower. I went to Radio Shack to get the 15-pin adapter to get it to work in the USB port. I think the adapter was maybe $15 or so. It works just fine.

all of their work? I don't THINK the gal I work for checks all of my work. I send her a list daily of every job I've typed and which ones I had questions on or blanks and she checks those. I can't imagine not ever having a question whether it be from a bad connection, mumbling, whatever. I would think that is normal. If you never have questions or blanks, I would question what kind of work is being passed along to the client. Of course if I was having to check every report because of mistakes, I would definitely question why I still am paying the transcriptionist.

got into MT for the flexibility, but over the years on-site MT where I work has no flexibility at ALL. They stand there all day looking over our shoulders, monitor our bathroom breaks, and even go into apoplexy if there is a gap of more than 30 seconds or so between finishing one report and starting another. Who needs THAT? And the OFFICE POLITICS.... OMG... I'm so sick to death of office politics, power struggles and back-stabbing. I would rather do ESL doctors all day long, by MYSELF, in the peace and quiet of my own home, on a flexible schedule so I can go outdoors in the daytime once in a while, and maybe get enough exercise that I won't become fat like all the rest of them in my office. After being an MT for more years than I care to admit, I know that money isn't EVERYTHING. It's not always how much you have, but how well you MANAGE what you do have. So at this point in my life, I'm ready to have fewer dollars in my wallet, and more peace in my life.

Stedman's spell check does not work with 2007.
Tech support at Stedman's said that come Feb 28, 2007 they are releasing an updated version of their spellchecker and it will work with Word 2007. If you already have Stedman's spellchecker 2006, on Feb. 28 you can call with your registration number and they can give you an update in the amount $39.00 instead of buying the whole thing all over again!

Several companies still train on site. In fact, we are piloting an on-site training sm
program, where everyone would come in to the Keystrokes office to train for 1 or 2 weeks. We have a large training room and feel that this may be a way to cover all aspects of an account, be right there to answer questions as they come up and have one-on-one contact.
It will be optional at this point and may not be more effective as remote training, but some people have expressed that they miss the training that you get when you start at a hospital.
We are trying to bridge that gap between working in-house somewhere and working at home.
It may seem out-dated in many ways, but sometimes going back to basics is a good step to take!

Go to SSA.gov and research the payee options. You may have to use the search engine, but your answer to this particular issue should be there.
I am disabled and while my kids were minors, I had to fill out a form each year on how I, as the payee spent each and every penny of the money they received. I don't see how his mother can justify how she spent his money for things that you normally would pay.
That said, he is getting Social Security right? Is your son receiving a dependent check? Under law, if a parent is disabled and has minor children, each and every one of those children also receive a check until they turn 18 or graduate from high school, which ever comes first.
The check is a percentage of your husbands, so for 800.00, your son should receive at least 350.00. If you have not been getting this, they would pro-rate it back to when your husbands disability started and that in itself, could solve a lot of your financial problems.
