Unfortunately, this is nothing new - and it's

I used to be a hospital MT.  The hospital MT department was appalled at the lack of quality in the reports coming back from the services they contracted to.  Finally, I decided this was my opportunity.  I quit my job with the hospital, started my own transcription service and started doing their overflow plus contacted other hospitals and started doing their overflow as well.  I have never had to advertise; all my accounts have come from word of mouth.

That was 14 years ago and I am still going strong.  It's not a new problem.  But the problem is:  1)  Advertising that says anyone who wants to stay home with their kids can be an MT.  2)  People who think since they can type and have a computer, they can be an MT.  3)  Services like MQ (and others) who will hire anyone off the street who can halfway type and will work for a low rate of pay - never mind if they are any good or not.  4)  People off the street who will accept low pay so they can work at home.  5)  MTs who consider themselves good MTs when actually they are not - the ones who say things like "well it's not rocket science" and "I don't get paid enough to look things up - QA can do that" and leave blanks and even worse GUESS without verifying anything.

That's why I am totally for some sort of certification being required before someone is allowed to call themselves an MT; something that requires demonstrated proficiency.

I have found that, sadly, there is an extreme lack of good MTs and I have heard other MTSOs say the same thing.  I really hate it that there are people who was definitely NOT qualified to do MT who are doing it - because then hospitals like yours get back trash instead of quality work and it makes us all look bad.
